My dad was a Ham and had an almost as impressive antenna on the back of his Lumina APV when I was growing up. It had a built-in winch that allowed him to crank it out of the way to open the hatch. It didn't have nearly as many elements on it as that one does, but it did have a whip that could be screwed into the top to make the whole thing over 20' tall. It wasn't attached all the time (had a custom quick release too), but it was easy to see him coming over a hill. Luckily it didn't make the jump to any of his other cars.

There was that one time though when he was driving his '88 735i and talking on the radio when the antenna on his trunklid was hit by lightning.

The context from JRITS is that the previous owner asked a "motorsport" shop to move the car's battery to the trunk. This was their solution when the cable they used wasn't long enough. Yes, the full starting amperage was flowing through that splice. No fuse either.

As a Prelude owner I am not surprised. The poo poo you see in the Prelude "community" includes, but is not limited to, park bench wings, "hella sick drifts," and quite literally people bragging about speeding tickets.

But as it is with cars and driving in general, the community consists of mostly idiots.

e: guess some of this should go in the "these are the people you share a road with" thread.

Speeding tickets can only be had in fast cars. That's why I was never pulled over in my '84 Skyhawk or my '91 Tercel.

I don't know, that might be better than the half-assed (and obviously hidden after the fact) crimp that the shop that helped me on my LS1 swap left in my positive battery cable. They at least used a proper crimp, but applied it so poorly that any force at all made it wiggle.

There's a reason they're out of business now, and it sure as poo poo isn't the too-large sum of money I paid them (before finding poo poo like that).

That actually isn't how antennas work - you don't need a lot of power to feed a large antenna with a lot of gain. For instance (back when I actually used ham radios instead of just messing with the electronics) I once talked to a dude in Cuba, from Massachusetts, with 5 watts of power, on 40 meter/7MHz. How? a 60 foot tower on a 100 foot hill with a 50 foot building under it and a big yagi antenna.

The difference between a 750 watt transmitter and a 1500 watt transmitter is 3 decibels signal strength... you can easily gain that much by adding a few non driven elements to a yagi type beam antenna. Of course, the signal will be much more directional, but that can be good. For most amateurs working with high frequencies (and therefore short, manageable wavelengths - I'd say around 2 meter and above as a ballpark figure) it's probably more beneficial to concentrate on antenna gain, height, and feedline impedance matching + signal loss than it is to concentrate on pushing more watts up the cable. The best part is that the antenna gain and improving your feedline characteristics serve you just as well when receiving as they do when transmitting, while cranking up the power output only helps while transmitting.

It's even better for parabolic antennas, the gain goes up as a function of diameter squared. Tough to build em for low frequencies, though, you end up cutting the dish shape into a goddamn mountain valley like the radio telescope at Arecibo and then hanging the feedhorn over it.
