Girlfriend picked up her Fiesta ST last week. It is definitely a fun car to drive around although I don't have much experience with any performance oriented cars. Haven't driven stick in ages so it has been fun to relearn. The snow is a bit interesting with the summer tires but we might try to get through this season before making any changes.

Ultimately the car won't keep summer tires. It is probably too much of a gamble to hope we don't get snow the rest of the season with it only being mid January, though. The thing I have been wondering is whether she should get wheels+snows or just have some all-seasons put on the stock wheels. Are low profile all-seasons worth it?

You bought a $24kish new car. Suck it up and buy a set of snow tires on steel wheels. You will get 2-3 seasons of use out of them, and the summer tires will last longer. All seasons are a crappy compromise. I have a crappy civic and it gets snow tires. I don't want to gently caress up my car and it is worth 1/5 the value of what you just paid. You want to risk your life, your car, and other's people lives? Don't be that guy. Go buy snow tires. e; for grammar.

There are plenty of places where snow tires don't make sense for the rare times it noticeably snows. That parking lot pic doesn't exactly look like an Arctic icescape. That being said, if you were going to go with an all-season compromise, it would've been a lot cheaper to strike a wheel swap with the dealer before leaving the lot. Summer tires in winter (snow or not) are a bad idea.

To be clear, since no one has mentioned it - summer tires don't just suck in the snow. They're designed to work within a range of temperatures, and if the environment becomes very cold they harden up and lose traction. You'll be experiencing traction below what all-seasons could provide all winter.

I just picked up a Fiesta ST, fully loaded, recaros, navi, sunroof etc. Absolutely love it so far. Great power, amazing handling, excellent interior. The summer tires are terrible in this weather, its been below freezing and even on clean dry roads they are all over the place, especially if there is salt on the road. I've already been pulled over twice in a week, so I just ordered a Valentine One for it! I want to buy snows but I just bought a set for my miata and I'm going to want r-comps for the Fiesta for auto-x and tracking, and I figure I can rock the miata when it snows.

I wish I had a place to store the summer tires  We have been driving the jeep as much as possible but today's snow wasn't supposed to be here until later, so now I have to drive home on the F1's in 6 inches of snow.

My "normal" Fiesta has winters on it and it's great in the snow. Winter tires on steelies are cheap insurance. veedubfreak posted:Buy the smallest set of steelies you can jam on there. So I only had problems start and stopping but didn't have to worry too much about spinning. Still the longest commute I've ever had.

I got caught in a snow storm with my summer tires on and I could make the rear end step out just touching the throttle. In 5th gear. I think that hour long drive aged me a few years.

I've been starting to have a few problems with my '06 GTI, and I'm really starting to lust for a Fiesta ST. Is anybody driving an ST in a place that sees real, honest winter? I'm in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and poo poo gets seriously snowy. My GTI does acceptably well for the most part when I'm running winter tires, but clearance is obviously an issue. I do find the sound of adjustable traction control on the ST to be appealing, because the GTI's can definitely be more of a hindrance than a help in certain situations. Paying full retail for a new car is also something I've never done and am terribly adverse to doing, but I don't know if I'll be able to stop myself once summer gets here.

I'll echo the already posted advice to get winter tires; the summer tires will last longer that way, and she'll be much safer when the temperatures are low and traction is otherwise reduced. It happens to be the same size as the spare that comes with it.

I have lovely aftermarket 16" alloys for my snow tires on my Focus ST and they look like rear end. I am going to plastidip them after this winter. Color thoughts? I'm thinking some sort of heinous electric blue color.
