It's Japan. They don't care. It's not "for" us. They're probably doing it because they want less foreign interest in "their sport", not as a money grab.

Kintamayama might dodge it because it's just a short highlight real, as opposed to every match ever.

That's surely how he's avoided notice up until now, but if they notice him, he's done. It's not hard to get stuff taken off YouTube, and it's not a battle Kintamayama could win even if he tried.

dupersaurus posted:I like that Japanese feed, I hope he can stick with it. Quality's great, the replays are cool, and it's nice hearing the names. Which Japanese feed? Kintama's video was complete poo poo in comparison to his usual stuff. Even he said it himself. For what it's worth, I checked with uVerse on TV Japan and saw two things to lessen the sting a bit - some timer must have reset because I was able to do "first month free" again, and they now also have an HD channel. So, I immediately checked the programming and see that they do about 90 minutes around the time makuuchi begins, so I assume it's live, and also a 30 minute condensed version around 4-6pm daily. DVR'able, of course. I watched the condensed version and the HQ quality is excellent and the pacing is perfect. I've never seen the wrestlers look so life-like before, and you see every goddamn fat ripple in the slow-mo replays. I wouldn't hesitate to juggle paying $25 every other month if this $10/day bullshit continues. The downfalls are of course, no hilarious Kintamayama commentary and backstory, not being able to get the highlights until the following evening, and no English subtitles. If you aren't an avid follower or study the kanji versions of their names, you could easily have no idea who was wrestling who. uVerse also shows an English audio option when you hit the Info button, but it didn't work for me. Dunno if that's because the DVR only records the main audio stream. Fryhtaning fucked around with this message at 02:48 on Jan 17, 2014 |

NHK has the shorter version and NHK BS (satellite) always covers all of every basho, so it's probably from there. I always forget when the sumo is on. Guess I have a reason to watch TV after work now huh. I was really, really sad that the Kyushu Basho in 2013 didn't fall on a day I could go up to Fukuoka (and that the tickets for weekends sold out like immediately as well). I'll get to more in 2014 though somewhere!

I had the distinct pleasure of seeing day 8 in person wherein Kisenosato lost, Osunaarashi beat Endou in a surprising match, and I got to see one of my favorites, Aminishiki, get his first win of the tournament. The food was good, I drank a bunch of beer, and there are plenty of colorful fans who turn up. Go see it in person when you get the chance!
