Sky News posted:

Tommy Robinson: EDL Founder Jailed For Fraud

The far-right group's founder - real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon - had previously pleaded guilty to two counts of the offence at a hearing in November.

Apparently reacting to the sentencing handed down to him at St Albans Crown Court, the 36-year-old took to Twitter to say: "This is a complete stitch-up".

He also posted a picture of a meal of meat, mashed potatoes and chips, with the message "one last feed", and then "see u all in 18 months".

Robinson was accused of conspiring with others to obtain a mortgage by misrepresentation from the Abbey and Halifax banks.

He previously served time in prison for using someone else's passport to travel to the United States.

Robinson was sentenced to 10 months at Southwark Crown Court in January 2013 after admitting possession of a false identity document with improper intention.

He has also had a series of brushes with the law as police tried to restrict marches by the EDL following the murder of Fusilier Lee Rigby.

Robinson left the group in October, saying he no longer felt he could control its extreme far-right elements.

But it's fine, I guess...

You just keep being you!

drat, Political Scrapbook is becoming psychic.

quote:

Tommy Robinson has been forced to cancel his speaking tour of schools. Looking to switch to a less extreme – and financially lucrative — brand of Islamophobia since leaving the EDL, Robinson raised collective eyebrows when it was reported the themes on which he would engage school children included “tolerance”.

News of the talks had organisations such as the Quilliam Foundation running for cover, followed by schools — with his first hosts pulling out. Now that he can’t headbutt people that disagree with him, Robinson says he will upload a YouTube video challenging headteachers who won’t let him in.

So with the tour out of the way, here are the remaining in his diary for this week:
  • WEDNESDAY: Watch a Crimewatch appeal to identify EDL thugs who threw cobble stones, bottles and coins at the police at a demonstration he addressed as EDL leader last July.
  • THURSDAY: Attend court to be sentenced for mortgage fraud. A custodial sentence is likely.
  • FRIDAY: Wake up in prison.

The EVF (English Voluntary Force) are coming to London on 15th March. They're a splinter group of the EDL that appear to use solidarity with the Ulster loyalists, which they go on about endlessly, as their 'niche.' Looks from their photos like their previous demos have consisted of a handful of angry looking men holding Union Flag.I think this one's on the same day as a BNP rally in London, too, although I don't know about the relationship between the two groups. Don't they usually just end up punching each other or something?

They'll be a counter-demo, which so far I can't see any involvement from UAF for, so that's a start. The EVF look to be a bit of a joke, but there can't be any harm in outnumbering/opposing them before they even find their voice, just in case. With the return of The Troubles, who knows, they might get some support.

Here's a link to the counter-demo: http://blackandredflag.wordpress.com/2014/02/05/stop-the-evf-london-15-3-14/

I can't make it myself.

I stumbled upon this old footage of the EDL coming to the Netherlands to support Geert Wilders. It features this beautiful scene where Ajax-supporters steal Tommy Robinson's EDL flag, before chasing him into a police van.

To say the Troubles are returning is really overstating it.

The Troubles is the commonly used name for the thirty-odd years of sectarian violence in Northern Ireland, roughly between 1969 and 1998.

The Troubles are not returning, the vast majority of both Nationalists and Unionists see the IRA as nothing more than a criminal gang (Mainly because that's what they are nowadays),and they have nowhere near the support or strength they had during the Troubles.

Yeah sorry I wasn't being entirely serious about The Troubles returning. In any case I'm not sure if there were to be, for example, an IRA bombing that the EVF are even well known enough to capitalise on it, like the EDL (kind of) did with the Lee Rigby murder.

Anyway, that's just a tiny part of their campaign, mostly they're concerned with 'the Islamification of many parts of Britain' and immigration. Looks like they're marching to Parliament at 1.30pm supposedly with a bunch of other groups.

Yeah apparently they don't get anywhere near as much financial support from the USA now (though they still get some).

Anyone who opposes the EDL is Antifa according to EDL-think.

Also there is only one Antifa group: UAF - and they are specifically behind everything that the EDL opposes.

An Ajax fan-club put out a call to oppose racism and fascism in their city by protesting against the EDL, so they were there as anti-fascists.

Pathetic and funny though they may be, the Defence Leagues also represent the closest northern Europe has seen to an explicitly fascist street movement in years. While we hope they implode hilariously (and it seems so), they bear watching on the off chance it's the start of something bigger.

How northern is northern? Aren't there a few crazy fuckers in Scandinavia?

Also, France isn't exactly northern Europe, but it's the UK's closest geographic neighbour unless you count the Republic of Ireland, and the Front National is pretty big over there.

I live in Denmark, which has only a few fringe groups that rarely see eye to eye. Danish Defence League almost brought them together, but it cracked out.

Sweden is another beast alltogether, with large neo-nazi groups that fortunately meet with popular resistance whenever they gather.

E: Apparently, four people have been stabbed by neo-nazis in Malmö last night, one seriously so. It just never loving ends :sigh:

There was a documentary on BBC3 last night about the EDL, and I was pretty appalled by how uncritical it was. It was basically just 'here's some young people in the EDL and what they get up to', it's almost like it was attempting to rehabilitate the EDL's public image. Great job 'left-wing bias' BBC :bravo:

What did you want the BBC to do that they didn't? The very first statement made by the presenter is that the EDL are 'a far-right racist street movement whose protests often end in violence', which doesn't sound like it'll do them any favours.

Does this argument really work though?
Documentaries like Jesus Camp and this EDL one are hardly making Evangelicals or Fascists rethink their lives and opinions; it's more aimed at people who watch it already thinking these people are a bit nutty.
It comes off that way too so those who are sympathetic to the doc subjects just write it off as it being biased or what not.

So it doesn't really serve much of a purpose.

It was interesting and useful in a know-thy-enemy way, and they did show some of the consequences of being in the EDL for anyone considering joining, like everyone thinking you're a tosser and getting your head kicked in. The teenage girls seemed mostly lost and lonely, using the EDL as a social network and the demos as dating opportunities(!) for the most part.

No BBC documentary is going to convince a actual fascist to abandon their horrible ideals, even if it's footage straight from Hell of what the Devil does to racists. Which is mainly making them actually live as racial minorities. Might keep some confused teenagers from thinking they're cool though.

I was there, I've heard estimates around 150 counter-protestors and that seems likely from what I saw. After the counter-march and speeches I went over to see what the fash themselves were up to. Surprisingly, they had one half-decent speaker, a woman who stayed on topic, seemed sober, and didn't descent into complete bullshit. After her, normal service was resumed, when another speaker announced that 95% of rapes in the city are committed by Muslims.
