EasyEW posted:There was a time when grocery stores weren't self-service with open shelves (some guy patented the concept in 1916), so in this case the mom probably either phoned ahead or sent the kid with a list and the money, then the person at the counter loaded him up and he was on his own from there. I'm aware of how stores used to work, but that doesn't seem to solve the issue of a small child having to carry half his weight in loose goods for some distance. Humanoid Female posted:I was a kid in the 1980s and used to get sent down to the corner store all the time, from about age 6, to buy whatever had been accidentally forgotten from the main supermarket shopping trips. It wasn't exactly on our OWN corner so it was about a half-hour round trip walk for a little kid, but I always liked it because it felt like some vast adult responsibility to be given money and have to bring back change and so on. I had a bag to carry it home in, though. Interesting. I grew up in a rural area with no sidewalks where a walk to the closest grocery store would have taken an hour or more one way, so I guess it's just outside my experience. Because there's something about these strips that puts me in the mind of a proto-Peanuts. Oh yes, he mentioned Crosby several times over the years: Schulz in My Life With Charlie Brown posted:Percy Crosby used the most wonderful pen lines you've ever seen and your life, and if you're a young person and you haven't studied Percy Crosby, you'd better get down and find some books and see how Percy Crosby drew. Schulz quoted in Lee Nording's Your Career In Comics posted:I am astounded at those who have never heard of Percy Crosby and Skippy. When you see them side by side (and yeah, some blogger did that awhile back), it's pretty obvious (although this dude calls them "swipes", which is more of a loaded word than I would've used). The standard list of Schulz's influences include Out Our Way, Krazy Kat, Segar's run on Popeye, the work of Clare Briggs, Roy Crane's Captain Easy (he called Crane "the man that influenced me the most"), and of course, Skippy. Thorn (January 10-11, 1984) The LAST Nina's Adventures (July 7, 1995) This was the last "Nina's Adventures" strip from the original run. Nina left a letter to her readers in panels 1 and 2, upside down. I transcribed it so you don't have to squint. quote:Dear Readers, Note the bolded part. Nina's "Fluff" comic strip started in 1997, two years after this final strip. I guess Nina was very adamant on getting a contract that she was satisfied with if it was in development hell for so long. For what its worth, Nina did revive "Nina's Adventures" in 1999 after she discontinued "Fluff". However, by then the alt-weekly market has changed and she made even less money. The revival only lasted 6 months. She finally put "Adventures" to sleep after that. (Nina did one more daily strip for syndication. Unlike her other two strips, she only illustrated it; it was written by somebody else) Lucky Cow (March 28, 2004)

Maybe in the real world, outside of his delusions, Spiderman has just committed manslaughter AGAIN and that's why he doesn't want to hang around for the fuzz.
