Peanuts (January 29, 1967) Funky Winkerbean "This is not a misery competition, but dammit, score one for the pizza guy!" The punchline, of course, is the looming specter of explosive death, if the dark clouds didn't telegraph it hard enough. Classic Popeye Sunday: We've spent a few weeks without full-force Wimpy dickery. It's time to change that (c. 1942) Pogo, in which the swamp folk decide to one-up NASA (again). (Jan 25, 1970; click for the more-legible-but-table-breaking original) First-Gen Blondie, in which Dagwood ignites a neighborhood riot. (c. 1941) And Baby Dumpling is his accomplice in petty theft! It's amazing (or disappointing) that Alexander turned out as dull as he did. Out Our Way (April 28-29, 1924) And since we were pitching Charles Schulz quotes yesterday: "There was no one who drew funnier and more warmhearted characters than J.R. Williams." And to compliment that, here comes the circus!

As it turns out, Apt. 3G's Frank Bolle has a loooonnnng list of credits in comic strips and comic books. Given his long life, that's inevitable. I ran into a comic strip he drew in the 1960s called Debbie Deere. It's a typical soap-opera strip. The biggest surprise, though, is who the writer was. It's Al Jaffee, of the Mad Magazine's "Fold In" fame. More info here. Mister Beeg fucked around with this message at 22:31 on Jan 26, 2014 |

Bloom County "This unfortunate affair was to end suddenly down in 'Miller's Mud Flats' with some injury. And while events were marked with general chaos, it was, nevertheless, apparent to all that the "Schwartzeneggerization" (sic) of Opus was simply not to be." Calvin And Hobbes Panel 3: Good avatar material. Just saying. The Buckets is not very good today. "Art holds a mirror up to Nature. The Buckets come along, turn the mirror on Art and say, 'Look how goofy you’re acting. Now get to work, Art. Your kids need an Xbox 360.' ...Greg Cravens looks in the mirror and see not himself, but all of us. And then he draws up the silly, grand, goofy, thrilling, utterly human things we do and calls it The Buckets." - From The Buckets' strip blurb
