I listened to Glenn Beck for 5 minutes today and he started going on about Katy Perry's Satanic performance ritual at the Grammy's. No joke. I mean, maybe it was a joke and I didn't get it?

The New Yorker posted:

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Dr. Stephen Hawking’s recent statement that the black holes he famously described do not actually exist underscores “the danger inherent in listening to scientists,” Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minnesota) said today.

Rep. Bachmann unleashed a blistering attack on Dr. Hawking, who earlier referred to his mistake on black holes as his “biggest blunder.”

“Actually, Dr. Hawking, our biggest blunder as a society was ever listening to people like you,” said Rep. Bachmann. “If black holes don’t exist, then other things you scientists have been trying to foist on us probably don’t either, like climate change and evolution.”

Rep. Bachmann added that all the students who were forced to learn about black holes in college should now sue Dr. Hawking for a full refund. “Fortunately for me, I did not take any science classes in college,” she said.

Bachmann’s anti-Hawking comments seemed to be gaining traction on Capitol Hill, as seen from the statement by Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas), Chairman of the House Science Committee, who said, “Going forward, members of the House Science Committee will do our best to avoid listening to scientists.”

I guess the part I found funny was that he said he didn't get why everyone was talking about Macklemore, when Katy Perry did something so much worse. I wasn't sure if it was a joke or not, but he did his typical set-up with his smug cohorts, who snorted and guffawed along with him at the ignorance of the masses who didn't know they were bedazzled by Satan.

Some thoughts on that Fox article.

quote:

BuzzFeed reported that MSNBC programs hopped on the story fourteen times in a single week.

This was offered as something impressive but this is an article about Fox news, who would blow through 14 segments about whatever bone they have to pick at the moment in an afternoon, even if it's not current news anywhere other than their network and the fever swamps of the RW blog collective.

quote:

Of course what Kelly said was dumb. But the reaction was even dumber

[citation needed] - Particularly since a lot of the stories featuring it were at least as tongue in cheek as Kelly thought she was coming off as. I'm also not buying the idea that Fox News' annual war on Christmas is in anyway some kind of writ-large troll on the nation as opposed to a genuine boiling over of white christian's pathological need to be seen as scrappy underdogs despite having a monopoly on society.

His evidence is that the left painted itself as the "killjoy p.c. police" but there's no elaboration on what national majority was having a grand ol' time until someone informed them that people have had alternate ethnicity Santa's or why being on the side of reality and decency was actually the unpopular option there.

I also disagree that Fox News being the subject of stories by "the left" is, again, some elaborate troll game. A news organization that inserts itself into the news that often should be reported on (think of what would happen if the rest of the news media today pretended this was still the late 90's and Fox News was an honest to god news org) but it's more likely the need for content on the 24 hour news cycle that's causing this.

I have no doubt at all that Fox News is run by some very very saavy media people who have found a lucrative market in what they're serving and know exactly how to talk to their audience. I also have no doubt that the "left" in the media and the honest news org's are handicapped in the kind of fight Rich is talking about by things like journalistic standards and a sense of being above the fray. I just think he's reading too much into that fight and casting it as a bigger deal than it really is.

Edit: Of course it all comes to a head in the comparison of Ailes leaving Fox News being some kind of equivalent event of the RW losing Obama as a target of their undying hatred that's going to throw the left into some kind of confused tizzy. I'll eat my hat when that happens.

Trying to say that Democrats and liberals are the ones who are going to be hamstrung by an obsession with Fox to the detriment of actual campaigning approaches the level of concern trolling when the last two presidential elections have demonstrated the exact opposite situation.

Maybe it'll get better as it goes on, but I'm pretty disappointed. It's just a humanizing portrait. To be fair, this is something he really needs. :mitt:

He still comes off as a piece of poo poo sometimes though.

E. Just got to the 47% remark. Let's see how they handle it!

They didn't talk about it at all.

Okay, 40 minutes left, and the best thing about the movie so far is that it justifies Ann Romney's owning the horses as treatment for MS.

The excuses for that debate flop is probably the highlight of this rather boring election documentary.

Some of his points were stupid, but I thought that the general thrust of the article was solid. Fox is a soothing echo chamber for old, white men who feel frightened by their mortality and the feeling that the world is passing them by. Liberal groups should do what they can to encourage the groupthink and inflate that media bubble on the right while simultaneously increasing our hold on the growing Internet media.

I'm not really all that concerned with the opinion of anyone who's still giving Michelle Bachmann a chance to win them over in the year 2014. They're already flirting with being written off by earnestly watching a daytime Wolf Blitzer program. But...

Mr. Meph is correct, being "PC" is strategically and morally right. Fostering a bunch of rude, blowhard assholes who take cheap shots at anyone who doesn't meet their litmus test is how you end up with people like Michelle Bachmann with her hand on your parties wheel. It's how you end up thinking the solution to your problems is a lazy, cynical attempt to disenfranchise brown and young voters.

Being a decent person who treats others, including their opponents, with a baseline of respect is how you end up with the people who brought you OFA and the coming demographic winter.

They can keep Wolf Blitzer's daytime polit-o-brawl, I'll take the elections.

Edit: They can take the young person who trolls gays by buying chicken sandwiches, who knows that all polls they don't like are conspiracies and that the level of crowd excitement is a valid measure of the health of a campaign. I will take the devestatingly smart gay kid who figures out how easy it is to do an end-run around these idiots and bakes Democratic values into the country even harder than anything Reagan dreamed of.

Being an rear end in a top hat isn't necessary...just don't let your opponent walk all over you. When they interrupt you, interrupt them back and say "please let me finish my point" and finish your point! In that vid Bernie not only let her interrupt, he let her interruptions distract him from the points he was making. It's very important to make sure your argument comes across strong and clear - otherwise people will perceive you to be weak and disregard the substance of your argument.
