Amazing.

Finally I know how they are making their money; enforcing exclusive contracts so devs can't even get multiple revenue streams going.

Their earlier games (I've bought and played Storm Over the Pacific and Strategic War in Europe) are rather generic and unpolished. Naval bombardment in the Pacific game never worked for the longest time (among other bugs) and the AI was pretty bad. I guess I should give it another shot, but I'm not really hoping for much.

Three sides of conflict:

Soviet Union - a regime, killing people for the Great Socialism. In 1920 the Polish Army stopped them, but this time Soviets are better prepared.

It's been on greenlight for ages, even if it gets greenlit the likely chain of events is Valve: "This is a £20-25 game, you'll need to price at that level if you want sales based on our massive database of spending patterns of millions of people". Matrix: "Nope".

Nope. You can stick some light forces in Palembang and Soerbaja and try to interfere with the landings once the carriers inevitably pull back to resupply but you can't oppose the Japanese carriers if they stick together.

Nothing you can do but die wherever the Kido Butai is. But Kido Butai can't be everywhere, and if KB is somewhere, then maybe you have a chance to poke at them where KB isn't.

The timetable in early 1942 is very tight for the Japanese. Most players, AI included, are going to have operations running without carrier cover. Destroy those. If he responds by rerouting KB, hit the area he just left.Honestly, knowing where the KB is is a major boon for the Allies in 1942. Its when you don't know thats terrifying. By July you can consider rolling the dice on a general carrier engagement if you are under LBA cover.

Obviously we need an even number of people do to this or someone will be left unable to play. What with there being no AI. Because World in Flames is bad.

In other news, the Warsaw to Paris PBEM game is chugging away at a steady but slow pace. The Belgian player is starting to realise that free-setup is not an excuse to go for a forwards defence and I suspect the French/British players may be starting to realise that obviously we're not going to go for the Manstein plan when they've set up specifically to defend against it. Schlieffen Mk.2 all the way baby

As for Decisive Campaigns, any advice on defending as Poland? I found formulating a plan as Germany straightforward enough, especially after the first goon game I played, but the Polish side is a little overwhelming and I can't quite decide between moving my troops to more defensible positions (read: not at the border and behind river lines) and giving up all of the pre-existing fortification levels.

It depends. There's a reason for the goon game where I defended that I insisted on the better strategy variant - you just can't do anything when before your first turn half your armies are already encircled or are in the process of being encircled.

You cannot fight in the open. You need to either be in a forest/city or behind a river or 2 turns worth of entrenchment. I set a big trap for you guys south of Warsaw that you handily fell into but I wouldn't expect that to work twice or against the AI.

You need to pick in advance where you are going to defend and stick to that plan because you cannot go mobile like the Germans can. Your divisions are weaker and there are fewer of them - your only advantage is in using the terrain to force fights at certain points that you intend to turn into meatgrinders.

Combat Mission: Red Thunder focuses on the hard fought battles from the swamps of Belarus to the gates of Warsaw during the summer of 1944. Experience the most balanced period of tactical warfare on the Eastern Front, even as the Axis' strategic ability to wage war began to collapse. Play out historical battles and campaigns or create your own customized Quick Battles. All new units, new terrain, and new features make this a must have for all Combat Mission fans.

Historical Background

On June 22nd, 1944, the Soviets launched the single largest ground offensive that the world has ever seen: Operation Bagration. So massive was the attack that in just a few days the German Army Group Center effectively ceased to exist, leaving the Third Reich with roughly 400,000 casualties it could not replace. Soon after, the Soviets launched two other major offensives which nearly destroyed a second Army Group and cut off a third. By the end of the summer all Soviet territory was liberated, Romania and Finland knocked out of the war, Hungary invaded, the Balkans under threat, and the Baltic states all but cut off from the Reich. Germany, and its capital Berlin, were left within striking distance of the Red Army

4-8 weeks out so yeah, February or March. I'm gonna get it on release because it seems like a really fun setting for a Combat mission game and at $55 it's pretty reasonably priced. As for the weapon list being crazy atleast this game will model conflicts involving less than 100 people so the weapons can be modeled in detail as opposed to WitE modeling different types of rifle.

It's completely standalone using the 3.0 engine instead of BN/FI's 2.0 engine. There will probably be a $35+ addon module down the line which will bring the full game up to the $80+ pricepoint we all know and love but that'll be a ways in the future.
