Also that final shot at the very end was weird. The thing with Ron a few episodes ago and the headphones didn't bother me but that big panning camera shot at the end overlooking the town broke the documentary style camera work TOO much

They had a big crane shot over the harvest festival, too, back when everyone liked the show. (Stop looking for things to bitch about.)

I actually forgot about that shot but it still didn't feel as weird as this. I'm not "looking for things to bitch about" since I'm not a fan of how the thread is suddenly becoming so down on the show but I just happened to not like that particular shot in an otherwise great episode

It was tough for me to get really into it since I liked Ann and Chris at the outset but really felt they'd been around too long, so I had a bit too much relief. If this were season 4 though I'd have blubbered like a fool.

This show isn't reeeeeeally a mockumentary anymore (if it ever was).

Edit: that is to say, the style doesn't really mean anything important for Parks and Recreation (unlike The Office). It's always been a little loose. Parks uses the format more because it's a kind of structural shorthand Mike Schur got comfortable with while he wrote for The Office, and TV audiences picked up the language while they watched The Office.

quote:

AVC: What sort of inspiration do you continue to draw from the mockumentary format?

MS: I love it. I think it brings a lot. We’re not as hardcore as The Office was. At The Office, we had incredibly strict rules about how it could be shot, how it could be edited, and how the actors should be. It softened the ground and made that format, which was a little foreign to people, possible. It allowed us to be looser with the rules. The main advantage is that, at its core, it’s a device for showing the ways people act and behave differently when they’re in public and private. You can see people behaving a certain way around the corner or through some blinds, then you can interview them and they’ll spin like crazy, hiding their feelings. We wanted this to be a mockumentary show because in the world of government, the difference between what goes on behind closed doors and what people present to the public is a huge issue. Plus, the single-camera format can be alienating, and the talking heads help us relate directly to the audience, and provide breaks in the action.

Frank apparently came back to life first. Ziggy just got out of prison by agreeing to join the Marines which is absolutely believable.

I'm getting more uncomfortable with them renewing Parks and Rec as this season becomes a clear farewell season.

I like to imagine what few talk to the camera segments they do now are more soliloquies than anything else.

It's still clearly a mockumentary with plenty of direct references to the camera. But Parks and Rec lives in cartoon world so who gives a folk about the rhyme and reason for a documentary that's been going on for so long.

I like to think that Leslie's just imagining how they're going to portray this portion of her life in the documentaries that will be made about her someday.

It doesn't matter and nobody cares but it's fun to think about.

I thought the same thing. The episode was great, it just felt like an odd way to end it.

I still wish they'd just completely drop the mockumentary framework altogether.

It annoyed me so much when an entire season's main arc was Leslie and Ben's super secret relationship and how bad it was if ANYBODY found out, but they're regularly talking to the cameras about it.

Plus, somehow that clichéd camera work and talking heads just disgusts me. I hate the look of it. I hate the fakeness. I cannot bring myself to give that Brooklyn 9-9 a chance because it looks so blech.

Since Parks and Rec is my go-to show to put on when I'm bored or dicking around the house I've realized the best joke in the entire show doesn't come from the regular cast.

Season 3 ep 11 Jerry's Painting. Leslie's on Perd's show with Brandi Maxx discussing what is/is not pornographic:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWQIw95pq4M

Perd: Brandi how would you define pornography?

Brandi: For me it's when the penis goes in.

Perd: ...

Leslie: ....

It's so perfect.

Also, they're not doing mockumentary style anymore. The actors aren't told to acknowledge the camera they do or do not completely on their own.
