Not too surprised, Kinnaman and Padilha have both said they wanted to put some of the most memorable lines in this one as homage.

Hahaha, I am the same - it doesn't make any loving sense but it's so 80's to make robots all crazy sounding - even the way he walks, you always hear him stomping about and the gears moving around. The Variety review makes it sound like a good movie that some people are going to hate because it's different from the original Robocop.

Don't put any stake in a reviewer who can't complete a review of the film without mentioning "the original." Comparing one film to another has no substance in terms of how the film being reviewed looks, sounds, plays on screen, is acted, or anything at all really. How the two are similar or different has no bearing on this one. A good review won't even mention it other than as namesake. Slim Killington fucked around with this message at 00:11 on Feb 6, 2014 |

I don't think critical reception will matter much for this film, as I suspect the determining appeal is identical to the original films: Do You Want To See A Robotic Cop Shoot Bad Guys?

I don't know if this has been posted already, but here's a really cool seminar with Peter Weller where he talks about the Robocop suit and the design challenges they had, and how he developed the movement system when he was in the suit. He's a really, really intelligent and well-read guy, it's really impressive.

I've scanned through most of the action cues...I can't identify a theme. It's just noise. I don't really like it. Which makes that stand out so much more...and also makes it wildly inappropriate.

The fact that they even used the original them at all, in any capacity, makes me happy. I don't care what they do to it, but hearing even a heavily-changed version of that theme instantly puts me in RoboCop mode. That's all I need.

Man. What's up with these noise scores lately? You can't take the time to come up with a defining theme? It reminds me of a prime time cop show score. Can't say I'm disappointed. But I am some what glad the real theme made it. I was debating in my head if they would use it, and the reason. I'm still not sure why outside of it being a remake. But we'll see.

That song didn't do much for me. Not because it was 'too dubsteppy' but because everyone in here said it was dubstep when it's really just the original theme with some compressed drums and synth toms dropped randomly all over it. I would love a proper bro step edition robocop theme.

^ I wouldn't buy that for a dollar. But I guess it depends on the context. If it's used at the end of the film, I might crack a smile. The movie built up to this, and it's a nice little wink to the fans and a fun way to leave the theater, assuming the movie isn't terrible. But if it's the actual opening title card after a "cool" sequence of Alex Murphy kicking rear end then I don't know if it'll work. If the theme isn't heard again for the rest of the film, then it probably won't make much sense outside of the context it's the music from the original. People who've never seen it will be like "What was that music?" Like in the Nightmare on Elm Street remake. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Si8-rzmpmeM The theme doesn't appear again in the film. It caught me off guard when I saw it, and I thought it was cool when they did it...but once the film was done, I wish they hadn't. It was pointless fan service. The worst kind. Although, the use of Long Tall Sally at the end of Predators is debatable. I got a kick out of it, but if you've never seen Predator, it's the oddest thing you could possibly play during the credits of an action horror film.

Sounds like parts of David Arnold's score for Die Another Day, where he took the original Bond themes and randomly dropped "BOOMtickatickaBOOMBOOMtishBOOM" drum 'n' bass riffs over them. poo poo, in other words.

The theme is old as poo poo and the style Pedro's redone it in is also old as poo poo. For a film supposedly set in the future that particular piece sounds dated as gently caress with regard to the 'update' it's had. Basically I'm accusing the producer of not having much knowledge of the particular sound he was after as the one he chose was generic and cheesy. This film is actually pretty good. Not amazing, but far from a disaster. edit: Right, my review posted: http://www.londoncitynights.com/2014/02/robocop-2014-directed-by-jose-padilha.html quote:"RoboCop is absolutely worth a watch, if only for the glimmers of actual brilliance that are within the film. For every uninspired bit of set dressing and cheap looking special effect there's a beautiful sequence of an amputee learning to play guitar with prosthetic hands. Though Padilha's Detroit is an boringly identikit urban environment, his Tehran and China are both striking and well-framed. While the central gangster baddie in the film is bland as bland can be, there's a decent amount of nuance to Keaton's evil Steve Jobs and Oldman's ethically conflicted scientist. For every boneheaded, antiseptic action scene there's an incisive bit of philosophy or sharp satire. Necrothatcher fucked around with this message at 23:09 on Feb 6, 2014 |
