I feel for Arino on every shooter challenge---amidst my laughs.

Did Tyrian ever see a Japanese release? Something like that would probably be a barrel of fun for the man on top of actually being moreso surmountable thanks to the upgrade elements.

Yay! I've been on a GCCX re-watching kick, so a new episode will be nice (especially since it's a game I've never heard of until this thread). :)

You have no idea how much I want this to happen. I played through that for my first time a while back and I think it would make an amazing challenge since it's a tough game, but still pretty fair for the most part.

Actually, looking at the list of Famicom games that start with N (I know the tweet didn't specify system, but the show does tend to lean more towards Famicom stuff), one of them is Nekketsu Kōkō Dodgeball Bu, which came out in the US as Super Dodge Ball... Part of me really hopes this will happen since I really loved Super Dodge Ball Advance on the GBA (I've played a little of the NES game, but I still preferred the GBA one :shobon:), and it would be awesome to see Arino discover the super throws.

Also, why hasn't anyone brought up the hardest game that starts with N... NetHack!
I'm kidding, I would never put Arino through that much abuse for our entertainment.

Edit: VVVV

Actually, when they went to that game store in the Korea trip, there was a NA SNES copy of NBA Jam in one of the boxes of games... I would've died to see Arino buy it and try it out when he and Kibe tried the games they bought in the following episode. They probably would've had a lot of fun playing it because NBA Jam loving rules. :unsmith:

Guys, they came out and said what the next episode. Arino is obviously playing N. :v:

More seriously, Little Nemo is an actual possibility since in Japan it was Nemo: Pajama Hero. The fact that they used the english character "N" implies that the title won't be Japanese as well.

The only other Famicom game besides Nemo that jumps out at me as a possibility is Nuts and Milk, the first third party Famicom game.

Alternatively, Arino should play NBA Jam. ("The Chief is on fire!")

The poo is based on one of the comediennes from Metcha Ike (Arino's other main show). In past years it's appeared at the event as a giant poo volcano that plays her deliberately off-key singing every 30 minutes.

So... I just watched the Woody Poko episode and it seems like a good episode, but I felt like not knowing a lot of the Japanese language definitely hindered on my enjoyment of it (that wasn't a hint towards you guys at SAGCCX since I'm sure you guys already have a long list of episodes you want to do and I dunno where this one would rank for you guys). :( Is it okay if I ask what the hell that box tapping game Arino and Matsui were playing was about and what it had to do with the game outside of using the game's box and little cutouts from the manual? :psyduck:

On the upside, the segments about the movie were pretty neat and it's cool that Toujima's daughter (I assume it's his daughter?) got to be in it. I hope it's okay I didn't spoil that since it had nothing to do with the challenge itself. :)

Sounds like an old-fashioned sumo game, called "Tap-Tap Sumo". You put two stand-up cutouts (or origami figures) of sumo wrestlers (or anything else, really) on the bottom of an overturned box and tap the box to move your wrestler in the hopes that he'll take down your opponent's. Just a fun thing to do.

Ahh, okay... That's what it looks like it was. I guess it was a little bonus for people to do with the game box and they wanted to show it off on the show. Thanks! :)

Also, that game doesn't work well when you replace the little paper cutouts with a box of cooling pads and a container of dried squid.

Kibe's first book is coming out soon. Genre: fiction. It's called "But I Wanted a Famicom."

(The red part is the book sash)

Rough translation of the Amazon summary:

Masamichi is a grade school student who lives in an apartment. His classmates are talking about Famicom again... "I want a Famicom, too," he thinks. But he can't bring it up to his mother. One day, his mother secretly gets him a game console of his own, except...

"But I wanted a Famicom!"

A Showa-period story about an unpopular boy and his video games, sparked by his mother's mistake. Loneliness and friendship at school. His very first fleeting love. The laughter and tears of a mother who cares for her son. Will Masamichi be able to get a Famicom?

Arino's comment (on the sash):
"Nobody dies, it doesn't get you excited, and there's no adventure. It's just a story that tickles my heart, as I grew up with similar circumstances. It hits me to my core! A fun read, but...simple!"

Knowing Kibe grew up with Sega, I can't help but think this story is more of an autobiography...

I just learned from an interview that this was Kibe's idea for the movie plot that was immediately rejected. Which means his pitch for the movie starred a self-insert. Which means he wanted a movie about himself.

The New Iron Chef looked really good, it's a shame it neither got any ratings nor got any sub groups working on it. I watched some of it raw, it was fun, but still needed some level of translation to explain some of the more esoteric cooking activities.

Abe would be the first Iron Chef to win while operating the video camera that captured the work he was doing.

Because he's just that awesome. And then he would ride out on a motorcycle.

Abe is the cameraman we never could ever have hoped to have, and the world is better because he is here.

I'd love to see an Arino vs Abe Iron Chef battle even though it would be the most one-sided fight in history (unless Arino has cooking skills that nobody has ever known about). It would be Abe's way of getting back at Arino every time they had a staff tournament, and Abe ended up being the first (and easiest to beat) opponent.

Yeah, he was working a line chef at a hotel when Yamaguchi asked him to quit and start doing comedy together. The reason Arino took him up on the offer is that Yamaguchi said he might get to meet an actress that Arino liked.

Oh wow, I didn't know that (or if it was mentioned in a translated episode, I forgot it)... Still, I'm sure Abe would mop the floor with Arino if they ever got into a cooking contest, but likely not as bad as I originally imagined. I'm sure Arino could hold his own up to a point with his past experience unless he does a lot of cooking at home for his family on his days off between GCCX and other projects, then it could be even less one-sided.

There's no realistic English market for a fiction book by the writer of some semi-obscure niche Japanese TV show, thus no plans for an official translation. Even if there were someone out there eager enough to translate the whole thing for free (quality or lack thereof notwithstanding), you'd be waiting a good long while for it; any publisher worth their salt would give a translator the better part of a year to translate a short story into English--and that's for pay.

To continue the thought, translating fiction is a whole other kettle of fish from translating a television show.

Or I should say, translating fiction well is a whole other kettle of fish from translating a television show. The translator not only has to be a translator, they have to be a writer capable of taking the qualities of the original and replicating those same qualities in the other language. Just taking the sentences and writing down their meaning isn't enough (technically it isn't enough for television translation either, but I've got a point I'm making). By it's nature prose is more complex.

Translating well is always a challenge for this very reason, it just tends to be more pronounced in books where there's a lot more to translate, and there's often some form of subtlety in the way things are written, especially when you start getting into written works that are flat-out making stuff up (e.g. like how Shakespeare invented a shitload of new words for his various plays). With TV/Movies this is rarer, but you're usually on a much tighter deadline (e.g. Quebec French dubs get 1 week start-to-finish to dub a film; you can go to a midnight showing of a dubbed French version of any film same day as the U.S. midnight release, almost no exceptions) and can still run into some weirdness, like having to translate your dialogue in exactly the "right" (wrong) way for Borat to work, or ending up having to dub Good Morning: Vietnam and the shitload of voices Robin Williams does in it (I think the French release didn't come out on time for this reason).
