Even after all this time, I don't really feel like Downcast is working properly with background downloads on iOS 7. I'll get a notification that there are 10 new podcast episodes to be downloaded, but even if I leave it for a while (even overnight with nothing else happening), usually only one or two will have actually downloaded. If I open Downcast, they'll start downloading, but the moment I multi-task to something else they'll all get paused again.

It doesn't help that their implementation of the iOS flat design looks like utter poo poo compared to pretty much every other app that has done it successfully.

How is the official Podcasts.app now, is it still awful or is it a decent podcatcher? Can it pick up podcasts from non-iTunes sources? I don't really need playlist support, all I really need are auto-downloads and for it to be simple to load individual mp3s into the app and simple to pull the mp3s out to backup for archiving.

See, ye say that but it is second best to the original calender app for one simple reason - you have to open the app to see the date. The original App displays the date as the icon. Perfect, in that regard.

Who says that this isn't possible?
I had a app called Celcius which updated the current temperature on the apps icon on the home screen.

me irl.
It currently isn't possible for an app to update its icon like the stock iOS calendar and clock apps do. Celsius (or its brother Fahrenheit) only was able to display the current temperature through a clever little trick, where they'd display the current weather as a badge that is typically used for push notifications. It's smart, but it's certainly a limited loophole that couldn't be used for displaying anything more useful than a simple number. Even Celsius/Fahrenheit are unable to display negative temperatures properly since there's no way a badge can go into the negative.

That would still work for what he's asking as there are no negative days in months.

You know what's awesome about Fox Sports Go? If you're using airplay to stream a game to your AppleTV, you can actually exit the app and do other things on your idevice and the video will continue to stream. I've tried this with NBC Sports Live Extra and it doesn't work, and as of right now I don't know any other iOS apps that do it.

It's actually pretty clever: iOS supports a proxy configuration system that allows you to dynamically route traffic through different proxies. Weblock creates a proxy config that sends ad requests to Google's DNS server. (Yes, really.) I'm really not a fan of how it abuses a public resource like that, but Google can handle the traffic.

That is clever, but it's pretty sketch to basically sell a DoS attack against google.

I came up with my own solution by setting up a VPN to my home network and setting up a squid server as a proxy that has ad blocking configured. Is nice because it works on both cellular and wifi connections.

Another little podcast app question. Do any of the big podcast apps have built-in tools for removing hiss from podcasts that aren't recorded in a professional studio? I've started listening to a few fan podcasts and the background hiss is getting a bit annoying.

I'm very interested in this too - I know it doesn't quite fall under the category of iOS App, but I'm looking for anything I can use to clean up the audio quality of poorly-recorded podcasts.

Speaking of podcast apps - I own every major iOS client and have used them all extensively. Pocket Casts is my most recent addition, and it's simply astonishing how much better it is than the others. It really puts Downcast and Instacast, in particular, to shame. If you're on the fence: do it!

what does it do better than downcast? I find downcast adequate but I'd be open for a real improvement.

Hard to articulate but the interface is about 100x smoother. It also has a web service component so the feed refreshing is done there rather than grinding through the list as Downcast et al do. Also, it has a little modal dialog with the show notes prior to playing an episode - this is incredibly useful.

I moved from Downcast to Pocket Casts because I'm incredibly fickle when it comes to apps.

In all honesty I think I preferred Downcast. The information was displayed a little cleaner and I liked having the first line of show notes in the episode list.

Pocket Casts is cool and all but I wouldn't bother switching from Downcast, personally.

I really don't think there's any one answer to the "which podcast app is best?" question. Everyone's needs are different. What may be an incredibly useful feature to one person, doesn't matter at all to another. The only way to find the best fit is to try them all and see which one you like best. We're lucky to have so many good options.

That is precisely the thing to do, Avatar.
I'm playing around with Pocket Casts and it's definitely slick. I can't seem to replicate the one major feature that Downcast has that I don't know that I can live without anymore, though:

With Downcast I can create a playlist with all the podcasts I listen to that update regularly. It automatically populates the playlist as new episodes are downloaded and I can rearrange the podcasts to fine tune the order I want to listen to them in. For example, I may want to listen to Podcast X right away but Podcast Y I'll leave lower in the list and get to it eventually. In Pocket Casts all I can see to do is either create an episode filter (which doesn't allow me to re-arrange the order, just newest or oldest first) or create a playlist that I have to manually add episodes to. Am I missing something key feature, or can Pocket Casts just not do what I'm looking for?

The other thing that bums me out with Pocket Casts vs Downcast is when I'm looking at new podcasts to subscribe to, Downcast lets me look at older podcasts in the list before I subscribe but Pocket Casts doesn't seem to. Downcast also just gives me the full list of podcasts rather than making me hit a "more podcasts" button at the bottom of the list a bunch of times as I'm scrolling.

I think I may stick with Downcast but Pocket Casts is close.

In all honesty, while there are a ton of great options, none of them leave me 100% satisfied so I'm really hoping Overcast will be the one for me. I'm surely setting myself up for disappointment though, because the odds of Marco's needs being the same as mine are very slim.

is there a way to try before buying with these? Coming from Android its a shift that basically every app costs money. Which is fine if I am sure about using it because a few bucks isn't a big deal but irritating when I want to try something before committing.

If you buy something and really hate it, you can request a refund from Apple. It's not advertised, but I've had a 100% success rate in the few times I've done this since 2008.

Depending on how often you use Linux, 1password has a feature where you can access your keychain on any browser. It's limited but if your only using linux frequently it's not a bad option. It goes on sale pretty frequently also. Keepass or lastpass should support all OS's though. 1password is a must have for me, I tried some of the others and I always go back.

So I guess pick the one that has a feature set you find more appealing. :iiam:

When I bought it they were on sale. I think 50% for the main apps (Mac/Windows), and I think I got the iOS app for like $3.

Maybe more of an OS X question, but is there a site that tracks the price changes of IAP in the App Store? I'm looking at Dash on OS X which is free/nagware and then a $19.99 IAP to unlock it. I want to see if that IAP has ever dropped in price or if I should just pull the trigger. It's just a tad overpriced for what it does IMO.

I find it strange that the Google app has true full-screen browsing (top indicators disappear when you scroll down) while Chrome and Safari don't. Is this really the case or is there some option I can enable to get it on either one of them?

I guess there are some other full screen browsers available in the App Store, but generally their ad copy is written like they're made for looking at porn. Plus I want to keep my saved form completions, bookmarks, device cross-compatibility, etc.
