I actually agree with the judges on that one, but I don't think it belongs on bottom looks. I wasn't paying enough attention during the reveal to suggest another one for the bottom, though. The Ron Perlman comment was uncalled for on the goat. I like Ron Perlman.

I guess it was kind of obvious on who was going home this week. I like most of the designs this week though so that's pretty cool thing to say about this season so far. Anyone see the show that's replacing Face Off once this season ends? Jim Henson's Creature Shop Challenge it at least looks to be similar in set up and presentation as Face Off and should hopefully be miles better than Fangasm and Naked Vegas.

Poor Rashaad, did he gently caress Glenn's wife or something? I thought he won last week but could kind of see how they could pick the ice vulture. This week wasn't even close though, his was so much better. The other one didn't even look like anything, what the hell.

You know unless something horrible happens to one of Rashaad's idea I feel like he'll be in the final 3.

I'm thinking that the judges are trying to avoid a repeat of Anthony where he won the first 3 challenges and they had to pretend he wasn't awesome at everything he did so that they didn't lose viewers.

Darren's was awesome idea, but the execution was lacking. I had a hell of a time seeing the skull face.

I think it was only there because they needed two teams for bottom, and of the ones that were "safe" it was probably below them all. I think it was pretty obvious to everyone which team the elimintion was coming from, though.

I wrote out the entire OP and I update it every week when someone gets eliminated so I look through the list of contestants' names regularly but I just tried to remember any of their names and could only recall Rashaad. I honestly can't remember any of the others.

Edit - I just looked through the list and went "Oh yeah, that guy ... and that guy ... and that guy." None of them are really funny or interesting or even overly annoying or overconfident and none of their makeups are ever super good or super bad, it's a fairly bland season.

I am not having your problem, but I think I have to recommend your advice because I stopped watching after season 2 (I think I caught like 2 episodes of season 3? hard to recall) and didn't start again until S05. I'm liking this season, and even managed to hook my husband in with season 5 even though he saw me watching it previously and had no interest at all.

I think Syfy is in a hard spot with this series; the audience is so niche (in my mind) that either they keep it coming outta the pipe fast enough that nobody forgets it's there, or they try to savor the flavor and kill their core audience's enthusiasm. It's easy for viewers to get series fatigue, in any case -- but hey, take a break. Come back to it in a while. You'll probably find some reason to like it again.

Yeah, I'm having this problem, too. Usually by the fourth episode or so I have a pretty good grasp of all the contestants' names/their work, but I'm having a hard time this season. Who did the ice dragon a couple of episodes ago? Was that Tyler? I can't even remember.

Also, maybe this is just editing, but it doesn't seem like anyone's having, you know, fun this season. No one's getting really excited about their ideas or trying to push the boundaries. Chloe especially just gives off this vibe that she does not want to be here at all.

I have this problem a lot at the start of seasons because it's all team challenges so you don't really get a sense of what each individual can do (aside from some who really stand out, sometimes).

Sometimes I really wonder how much an extra 30 minutes for the show would help at the start of the season, so they can focus more on what they do in the shop. It just seems so condensed sometimes. Once the field gets trimmed it's much less chaotic (and the quality of the makeups is better in general which helps) and way more interesting.

I definitely have felt a little bit of oversaturation with this show. The fact that it's been doing two seasons a year has been hurting it, I think. Too much of a good thing and all that.

It doesn't help that the same "drama" gets used in almost every episode. Someone loves the challenge, it was their favorite thing growing up. Another person has never heard of what they're supposed to be doing and struggles for inspiration. One team isn't getting along. An overweight girl with unnaturally red hair explains what the sculpting phase is. Some guy is running with a very obviously bad core concept. Someone's mold gets stuck or breaks. External teeth. Someone is running out of time and has to finish painting in last looks. Glenn uses a clumsy, overwrought metaphor for a final look. Ve says "Not your best work, today, hon" to someone who has produced a loving trainwreck. Winner expresses excitement at winning, loser is disappointed in themselves for getting sent home, but knows this isn't the end of their career.

I feel like I have seen literally everything that could happen on the show except the final sculpts, so I can just fast forward to the reveal. I might have to take a break and come back to the season.

On this topic, how do people who are clearly so bad at one aspect or another constantly get on the show? Two seasons ago (I think?) you had one girl who's painting skill level seemed to be "point airbrush at person and hold the trigger" last for like six weeks or something. And there's always someone (or someones) who gets eliminated in the first couple weeks who can't model a proper face.

I'm sure a lot of is has to do with the fact that the artists are submitting a portfolio to the producers to be selected, and of course everything they show is going to be perfect, made with little to no time constraints, in their own workshops, with tools they're comfortable with, on a topic they're interested in.

Some people just fold when forced into an unfamiliar situation, and that's why like 90% of them leave saying "I'm just sad I couldn't show them what I'm really capable of"

They'd never do it because it would increase the cost of production but I'd love to see a season where they get at least one full extra day for each challenge but are judged even more strictly. The Roy's would thrive. Mistakes would not be quite as catastrophic. Overall quality of the makeup would be better but there is no saving a bad concept so we'd still have people to laugh at.

This season does seem to be getting off to a slow start, but I think it picked up this week. I liked Tyler's enthusiasm and Niko's came out better than I expected. It seems Daran is going to do something unusual for every challenge, which means he probably won't last to the end. I have to say I thought Matt's blindfolded monstrosity was terrible; I predict he'll be leaving soon.

But kudos to Corinne for demonstrating that a good paint job can save a bad/missing sculpt. When she had to switch to the generic Spock ears I thought she was done for sure.

Yep, it had some pretty good hooves but they kinda got lost in amongst all the other detail at the end:

The fact that he gave his model a short staff to hold so the guy ended up using one hoof as a hand anyway was a little weird.

Something I've learned from the show is that painting skills seem to separate people in this line of work more than anything else. There appears to be plenty of people that can sculpt at least a passable goblin face like Corinne did, but you can take something average like that and make it look legit camera ready by putting a complex and realistic looking paint job on it. That guy from two seasons ago that was constantly painting at last looks should take a lesson from that.

Really weak episode, I thought. It might have to do with the casting, because every week I am seeing people who I never saw before. Like, who the hell is flannel guy? Where did he come from? The other seasons weren't this bad. The challenges also might be a part of this as well. My favorite challenges this show has done in the past are the nude painting into the background ones. Those are so freaking cool to see. The spin off show they tried with this was reallllly boring, though.

When they see the talent lacking, like this group is showing, they need to make the challenges team based. Even if that means all the way to the end, just keep teaming them up. It will make simple challenges have a better end product, and the harder ones at least passable. You wont see poo poo like saran wrap skin falling off.

The preview for the Jim Henson's Creature Shop looked awesome though!

The problem is that the show is only 40 minutes long and about 5 minutes of that are taken up with the credits/"THIS WEEK ON FACE OFF!" and the things right before each commercial break that previews what happens after the commercials. So when you have a dozen or so competitors, half of them end up getting little to no screen time on any given episode. I think the show gets a lot better on the back half when most of the dead wood is shaken off and they're left with the strong competitors.

When I went back and watched some early season 1 episodes I noticed that the models were often acting their little hearts out, and the contestants sometimes coached them on how to act. In later seasons the models usually just walked out and stood on stage.
There was also a bonus end of season episode with some 'behind the scenes' footage where they revealed that they instruct the models not to yell and scream but a bunch of them would run out onto stage and start yelling anyway.
