Yeah, I need help. I'm focusing more on the medical aspect of steampunk as one of the main characters is a doctor.

I subconsciously read that as Doctor Who and not The Doctor who had done something. Does this guy really think that boiling water to disinfect it could only be discovered in the 1800s? A simple google search and common sense tells me that ancient civilizations knew that boiling water until it was clear made it safer to drink. Clear water healthy, swampy water sick.

It's also a very powerful image that represents the migrants' situation very concisely. But apparently it's badly paced because, come on, that's just filler when the real plot is finally getting to California so we can see the showdown with the Big Bad.

The best thing about the turtle chapter in The Grapes of Wrath is that it's essentially the entire book distilled into a two-page Voight-Kampff test.

AW WHAT IS THIS poo poo

Skinship Grope posted:

In a highly hierarchical society, communal bathing is seen as a great equalizing social event, healthy in establishing a close relationship with peers and family.

A Furo Scene with girls will inevitably end up with one character admiring another's physical development, with subsequent teasing and tickling. An added gag is that a highly flustered male on the men's side of the bath only able to hear the discussion and either taking it out of context or trying to get a peek, sometimes both. This is commonly used as fanservice, but pops up in shojo as well as shonen. This fanservice-oriented trope is much rarer with guys, aside from playful horsing around — with the obvious occasional exception of Yaoi Guys.

A related trope in the West is the Womens' Locker Room, which in a certain kind of work is synonymous with platonic (or not) Les Yay.

And while baths, hot springs, beaches, and locker rooms are the most likely settings, any scene where a girl decides to get playful with her friend's... assets falls under this trope. Even being close friends isn't a hard rule, though you have to question the motives of someone who gropes people they barely know for fun.

Any protest from the one being groped is likely to be responded to with "Don't be silly! We're both girls, so it's okay." And while this almost always works in anime, suggesting it in Real Life is not a good idea. Kids, Don't Try This at Home unless you're on really, really good terms with the other person.

Compare and contrast with Thanks for the Mammary, Girl on Girl Is Hot, and Double Standard: Rape, Female on Female.

You can tell the perv authors desperately wish they could do this in real life. "Hey, molestation is funny and sexy!"

The page image is troper wank material and I'm sure you can guess which category has the most examples by far.

But wait, there's apparently Truth In Television:

quote:

Japanese schoolgirls, at least, really do seem to do this to one another on occasion. They also tend to glomp each other in more generally suggestive ways in public; they even call it sukinshippu ("skinship").

:stare:, with a healthy dose of :wtc: for good measure.

Relevant: don't touch the poop, but you can watch a weird brony melt down about this in the zombified TGWTG forums no one should ever post in right now!

The tl;dr version is:

1) The OP, a brony and TV troper, gets real butthurt about me haranguing bronies and tropers on my twitter feed, and starts a thread trying to get me fired for expressing the opinion that those communities are toxic cesspools.

2) He doesn't link to specific tweets because none of them are anything remotely worth getting upset over. But his beef, initially, is with my hysterical laughter at the "Ask Princess Molestia" blog getting shut down through C&D from Hasbro and the cries of "censorship!" it elicited from creepy bronies. (So...they have no idea what censorship means.) He goes out of his way to say HE didn't like that blog or anything! But the "dirty rotten SJW PinkiePony" who bitched about it to Hasbro (also a woman, who has gotten *heaps* of abuse over saying the MLP community is toxic,) is to blame more than Hasbro, so that's censorship! <>

3) When called on his bullshit by others in the thread, he clarifies that it would be okay if I basically said "BUT THEY'RE NOT *ALL* LIKE THAT" after every goddamn tweet because, well, *he's* not a creepy misogynist brony! :qq: (Notably. Guy video producers like Spoony or Cinema Snob do not get the same vitriol for making similar comments. "That's just their persona!" But I'm supposed to be their waifu, so, nope, I can't talk poo poo about bronies. They don't want their waifu even remotely implying that they might be a creepy brony.)

4) He goes on to prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that he *is* one of those creeps I was talking about when he moves from MLP to TV tropes:

A) "If she didn't want a TV Tropes page cataloguing every time she wore a bikini or costume on camera, she shouldn't have worn those things on camera."
That was *never* my problem with TV Tropes. Mention that I wore revealing clothing in my videos sometimes all you want, weirdos, my beef was with aspects of my personal life being catalogued as tropes. A shocking number of details about my personal life. :wtc:

B) "She didn't have to mock us and get upset, she should have just talked to one of the mods and gotten it locked. Which she did, so why did she have to throw a ~girly fit~ first?"
As you all in this thread know, the pages were locked because I told people on twitter to edit them with blurbs of nonsense and gently caress with them as much as possible, eliciting total anarchy that they were forced to lock. I never negotiated with a mod to get them locked, because it wouldn't have done anything.

5) More respondents in the thread pick up on this and go "Hey, that sure sounds like victim-blaming, telling her that she deserves creepy comments and objectification because she wore a bikini once or appeared faux-naked in a video." (Both were played 100% for laughs and not "sex appeal." They are completely ridiculous skits.)

6) OP melts down in a double post of fake apology because "oh no you guys think i am a misogynist too!!!"

Bonus content: At one point, one of the few guys trying to agree with the OP points to a series of tweets I made "insulting" Legend of Korra. (Once again, totally benign statements about how the network was dumping the back half of the show, probably due to ratings.) Brony-Troper-OP basically goes "What? I don't care about that, her opinions there are reasonable. But when she talks about MY LITTLE PONY..." :qq:

Of course they do. That's why it's called Real Person Fic.

quote:

There is some level of controversy surrounding this genre. For some people, the mere existence of Real Person Fics — especially lemon fics — is a case of squick, while others don't see them as wrong as long as the tone is kept respectful. Then there are those for whom anything goes because it's unlikely the "protagonist" will ever read the fic anyway and will do everything from Character Derailment to Gender Bending to unceremoniously killing them off. (That last can sometimes be legally dangerous, though.)

Some people think it's creepy, but other people don't, and the actual subjects of this porn will never read it anyway, so it's fine.

I'm not going to build a quote wall, because a big list of "sexy fanfic has been written about this person" is boring, but nearly every example listed is about slash. One example on the list is relevant to this discussion:

quote:

There is a disturbing amount of That Guy with the Glasses fanfiction.

Fandom can't agree on whether it's all RPS or just some of it is. Obviously the fic where people write 'Noah' and 'Lewis' and 'Doug' doing things are RPS. But what about the vast majority of the fics, which use the names 'Spoony,' 'Linkara,' and The Nostalgia Critic and have appearances of the characters Ask That Guy, Mechakara, and Dr. Insano?

So it gets complicated when it actually is dark Real Person Fic. The Critic getting humiliated, tortured, beheaded, mutilated, gangbanged, snuffed and so on is A-OK, but when the Kink Meme asks for Doug abuse, everyone suddenly gets too scared to post anything.

TvTropes can't even use their standard "it's a thing that happened, therefore we must trope it" when it comes to TGWTG fanfics, since their Fanfic Recommendations page for TGWTG is very long, and consists primarily of links to slash porn stories about the internet reviewers becoming prostitutes.

quote:

Hookerverse by emeriin (with guest authors; dark!fic, prostitution, swearing, drugs, alcohol; link goes to masterlist)
Recommended by nombretomado
Synopsis: This was apparently a long time in coming, first thought of in the early days of the fandom. Essentially a re-thinking of the TGWTG crew centering around a club, run by the Mikes, featuring some as pimps, some as hookers, and others as customers getting drawn in. Emeriin is the main author, but others have written with her blessing.
Comments: Absolutely unafraid to go into the down and dirties of such a 'verse, these fics run the gamut from the depressing, to the hot, to the horrifying. Though the idea is cracky, characterization is not ignored and people are still recognizable as themselves. While it is centered around hookers, there are both smut and gen-fics.

untitled by unknown (M Preg, implied character death, really disturbing imagery.)
Recommended by emeriin
Synopsis: Things go from amusing to horrifying when Critic gets pregnant.
Comments: Dark M Preg that's actually good is seriously hard to come by and this one stays in your mind for days. And the characterization is excellent; Chick cares deeply but does it in a quiet way and Critic is suffering badly (when his hair starts falling out, you'll be crying) but is strong-willed to the very end. Who says all Kink Meme fills have to be kinky?

Or Is It? by Iambic (Bondage, mindfuckery, knifeplay, dubcon, Critic!whump. Link goes to the first chapter, of which there are three.)
Recommended by emeriin
Pairings: Critic/OFC, implied Critic/Chick.
Synopsis: The Critic is kidnapped by one strange woman and rescued by another. Unless they’re the same person. Unless it’s all a dream. In other words, what the hell is going on?
Comments: Not many fics with OCs are worth talking about, but this one is. The story is fantastically mindfucking, Penny and That Other Girl are wonderfully mysterious, even while he's suffering a lot Critic still keeps his explosive personality and the Chick is a very sweet, in-character Mama Bear.

Tie A Red Ribbon by Fininevermore (Bondage, knifeplay. Link goes to the first chapter, of which there are three.)
Recommended by emeriin
Pairings: Critic/Nerd, Critic/Ask That Guy, Ask That Guy/Nerd/Critic.
Synopsis: Ask That Guy decides to get the Nostalgia Critic a Christmas present. The problem is, it's unwilling, loud and very, very angry.
Comments: Toppy!Critic and Bottomy!Nerd (trust me, this will put A Very Special Truce out of your head for good) and Ask That Guy being his awesome, sadistic self. What more could a fangirl ask for?

In the Wasteland of Truth by nombrehetomado (Prostitution, character death, violence. Link goes to the first six chapters.)
Recommended by emeriin
Pairings: Critic/Ask That Guy, Spoony/Scarlett, Insano/Scarlett, Critic/Chick.
Synopsis: A murderer is on the loose in Victorian times, and a detective is hot on his trail. He's getting sucked in way, way over his head.
Comments: Born out of the Kink Meme, this Victorian AU is both fanservice-y (Critic's a rent-boy with eyeliner, Chick, Goggles and Marz are fem-dommy stage girls in suits) and extremely gripping. The characters are both perfect in themselves and perfect for the time, in speech and actions and thinking processes.

There's also the Japanophile side of the Internet nerd community which is evidently very relevant to this, given how so many of these characters are shoehorned into rigid seme/uke roles (the rapey, aggressive 'man' and the weepy, submissive 'woman', if you don't speak weeaboo). In Japan, yaoi/boys-love is a hyper-stylised depiction of gay male love aimed squarely at teenage girls, allowing them to experience romance at a safe remove because whoa lordy, Japan's sexual politics are screwed up. The Dark Princess and the lengths she'll go to to get what she wants can be pretty scary. When the source of her power is finally destroyed, she tries to ram into Spectra with her spaceship, in the hopes of destroying it and any hope of the universe's recovery.
*The movie opens with her being told that stealing Spectra could destroy the universe. She doesn't care.

I'm sure I don't need to tell you this, but appparently My Little Pony is a terrifying rollercoaster of nightmares.

I mentioned many pages back that, thanks to TV Tropes I now know that John de Lancie's character from MLP is BRUTAL Complete Monster and BRUTAL Mind Rapist who BRUTALLY turned the show Darker and Edgier, thus BRUTALLY proving once and for all that only bronies can really appreciate how BRUTAL the whole thing is. What Do You Mean, It's Not/For Kids?

BRUTALLY.

(I am almost certain John de Lancie was playing a character very much like Q in the cartoon)
