He might be buying into the "oh god the brown hordes are outbreeding us" white supremacist propaganda that's been getting more and more popular amongst dogwhistle-blowing right wing media shills. It's not uncommon to hear people lamenting about "our declining birthrate" in America, when all they're actually talking about is the white birthrate in comparison to other ethnicities'. You can play this game forever. I argued against the idea that there was nothing for Britain to be gained by entering WWI when they did. None of your arguments adress this point. It's ludicrous to criticize much of anything anyone did at the onset of WWI because nothing in previous experience was anything close to what WWI was, even right from the start. Britain entered the war to honor obligations, and to cash in on some favors, and to try to put their hand in what almost everyone thought would be much like previous wars. While many people got an inkling of how different WWI would be, no one had any real idea of just how much. Sure, back then entering war might have been a serious subject, but it wasn't anything close to as serious as it became after WWI. Before WWI, entering a war wasn't the grave decision it's since become. The elite would say "now's a chance to put a few honors on our family names. It'll be jolly good. Can't wait," just like their grandfathers and before had said. So, maybe it was a mistake, but only a mistake that a fortune teller could have avoided. They didn't even have helmets, for god sakes. Officers wore plumage and rode toward hailstorms of bullets on horses as enemy officers did the same stupid poo poo. The idea of actually avoiding bullets was a radical, and some actually thought, cowardly idea. That's how totally unprepared everyone was. The French didn't think the range of modern artillery was worth the weight. People at the start still went into battle wearing shining metal armor at the start and carried lances upon their war horses. It was like this trap everyone fell into because their ideas about war hadn't advanced alongside their weapons. It was almost like a bunch of children that just discovered loaded guns in a nursery. I didn't look it up, but I'd guess there are more, or at least close to the same amount of 16-30 year olds in the 2000's than in the 1990's. There actually is a population bubble that is just passing through the system right now. The abnormally high ratio of baby boomers to young workers is straining our system. It's exasperated by newer ideas of family size, people becoming parents at ever older ages, access to birth control, and Freep's favorite: legal abortion. It's not just in the US, but rather there's a strong correlation to economic development, the empowering of women, and declining birth rates: http://www.forbes.com/sites/currentevents/2012/10/16/warning-bell-for-developed-countries-declining-birth-rates/ In fact, the US has a lower fertility rate than the "replacement rate", and our population right now is largely propped up by immigration. This fact is currently challenging our old ideas about immigration, and well, here we are having the national conversations we're having. This, of course, terrifies Freep. EDIT: quote:Smart. Very smart decision. Nip it in the bud. Many orphanages are closing in America thanks to the Rainbow Mafia demands. Of course if an Obama gets elected in Russia, he’ll just ignore the law. You know...just to be on th e”right side of history”! Am I just reading him wrong, or is that guy actually angry with the idea that there aren't enough orphans to keep orphanages open? He says it like there's a sad orphanage operator out there just praying to Jesus that maybe a few more kids will become orphans so he doesn't have to close up shop. He hates gays so much that it's just a given to him that it would be better to have open "orphanages", than to have the kids adopted by gay parents. Also, the US no longer has orphanages at all. That's just not part of our system anymore. ColdSnickersBar fucked around with this message at 23:20 on Feb 13, 2014 |

If you give poor people food stamps then you're literally helping them to be overfed and unconcerned. The sad part is, you could life this word-for-word and drop it into a Freep thread, and they would take it at face value. One of my "favorite" pieces of right-wing logic is the idea that you must GIVE MORE to the rich to incentivize them to produce, but you must TAKE AWAY from the poor to get the exact same effect. "If you give more benefits to the already privileged, it causes them to work even harder, to produce more, and to generate value." "If you give more (any) benefits to the less privileged, it causes them to become system-dependent leeches who take endlessly and contribute nothing."
