Crotch Fruit posted:Of course my wife, mother-in-law, and I did not know the Ion was a Cobalt. Is that bad? I mean besides the fact the Ion was poverty spec, both my wife and I liked it a lot more than her Civic. I mention it because nearly everything mechanical is shared with the Cobalt - i.e., parts are incredibly cheap, and easy to find. Interior and body parts are a little more difficult to find, but more because production ended in 2007. There's a metric assload of them in junkyards, if you don't mind used parts. I own an Ion myself, it's been a great car. Mine is the opposite end of poverty spec (Ion 3 - sunroof, automatic headlights, OnStar, etc), but it's the same as the poverty spec car in terms of engine/transmission options. I picked mine up last January with 65k, it has 87k now. Only money I've spent on it has been on oil changes and a set of tires; (CarMax) warranty covered a repair to an EVAP sensor plug. As far as I've been able to tell with my own Ion, the only real mechanical differences are the clutch master cylinder (on the manual transmission version) and the battery. The automatic on the 03-04 coupe was a pile of poo poo (early GM CVT); 03-04 sedan had a Toyota-sourced 5 speed auto that was reliable, but people didn't like how it shifted; it got replaced with a GM 4 speed auto for 05+. I've owned two Civics (95 and 96, both M/T EX coupes with the 1.6 VTEC); the Ion would definitely lose in a race against either of them, but IMO it's a much more comfortable car, and a bit quieter (at least in Ion 3 trim). And it handles just as well as the Civics. randomidiot fucked around with this message at 11:52 on Feb 13, 2014 |

The extent of the "chaos" on my drive home today consisted of a minivan cutting me off and almost forcing me to plow into them, and watching a Dodge Ram turn off the road too fast and hit a decorative fence. I'm disappointed.

When the defroster is on the traction control light is directly connected to an injector that sprays gas onto the exhaust manifold. How are these cars even starting do people in the south even use antifreeze?

No, the driver probably got stuck on ice, applied more throttle to make it go faster, and redlined the engine until it grenaded. You see it here once in awhile, usually on a very steep hill like the one pictured.

Antifreeze also has anti-corrosion additives and a higher boiling point than pure water, so yes, at least when new. Although to their credit, I don't know anyone down here who runs straight water in older vehicles except one ex-coworker who had a fast coolant leak (weekly refills) and didn't want to spend the money until he got it fixed.

These are the people you share a car park with: The beauty of driving a stupid little car (the Aygo is mine) is that you can fit it into the space next to the twat in the VW that can't park (The only space left in the whole bastard carpark). 9 hours after parking I came back and the VW had gone and had obviously had to climb in through the passenger side. Made me feel better after a long day

Can any Michigan natives explain to me why the drivers here are constitutionally incapable of turning into the near lane of multi-lane roads? Left turn, right turn, four-lane, eight-lane, it doesn't seem to matter. Everyone turns into the farthest possible lane in every circumstance, even when they have lines painted around the curve specifically to guide drivers into the correct lane. I have lived in Pennsylvania, New York, and Ohio and never saw nearly as much of this as I do in Michigan. Bonus points if you can explain to me why half the drivers leave their brights on all the time as well.

Burning car pic is from Raleigh, when I lived there we had at least one 18" snowfall and several 12" overnight drops. Hell, when I was really little in South Carolina we got enough one weekend to make a network of tunnels in the yard. The nice thing about the Carolinas is the next week it'll be like 50 degrees and the snow is gone in a few days, unlike New England where I'm pretty sure we've got some drifts left over from 2011

Boy is my face red But let's assume your version is true: he should've backed his car in and stayed within the line. He'd have room, the other person who FORCED HIM TO PARK LIKE THAT would have room, and Tomarse wouldn't have posted in this thread because nothing would've happened. It's also possible the Golf parked first and the sedan was all "woo, free space, I'll use it!" Basically there's no situation where the Golf isn't at fault.

Or there was a car in that spot, crooked, when the Golf parked. For all we know this is all some crazy butterfly effect and the original perps are long gone. That's especially common around here these days with the lines frequently obscured by snow / dirt.

My area pretty much hires only private plowing services for the roads, and they're not very good. Today I finished shoveling my driveway, and looked out into the street to see if they plowed it. At first glance they didn't, but then I realized that I was staring at a snow bank obscuring the one trail of plowing done. Apparently the driver just drove down the center of the road, and created a little valley that nobody could drive over the bank of so that we could actually leave the neighborhood.

Huh. Why do cars run 50-50 then? I always thought coolant reduced the specific heat capacity of the mixture and therefore lowered the boiling point
|
# ? Feb 14, 2014 15:23 |
|
Because the freezing point of pure antifreeze is only like 10 degrees below that of water! E: Technically 65% would be best, but 50-50 makes for easier math when mixing and is generally good enough unless you live in Yellowknife or some poo poo.

Is this the boiling point at sea level? Liquid cooled engines are usually pressurized, which would raise the boiling point even further. In a really hot environment, you want to use 50/50 because anti-freeze has a lower specific heat than water, and too much of it will reduce the effectiveness of the cooling jacket.

EightBit posted:Is this the boiling point at sea level? Liquid cooled engines are usually pressurized, which would raise the boiling point even further. Yes, all at atmospheric pressure at sea level. I suppose I could add some more lines to the graph. with a 15psi cap the boiling point of straight water goes up to about 250f. In a really hot environment you could even use less than 50% coolant. The downside is that you lose some of your anti-corrosion and lubricating properties.
