Truthfully, I think 07th Expansion is in sort of in a weird place. They produced two outstanding works that relied upon on a very specific formula, set-up, and structure which makes making new entries difficult without retreading the same ground. I suspect RK07 is afraid to a certain extend of a third WTC pillar being stale, or he doesn't have as many ideas left for another big murder mystery. Their attempts to diversify with Higanbana and Rose Guns Days have not been rousing successes (I wound up putting down RGD out of boredom and don't have any plans to take it back up), so what do they produce? Maybe additional fandisks on an existing popular property is all he can come up with at the moment.

It's also the AGE route.

To be fair to TYPE-Moon, or rather Nasu specifically, he's put out a lot of content across several mediums, it's just that Fate stuff gets disproportionally merchandised... probably because it keeps raking in the cash.

Not really. TM was able to sit back and milk one property because they could, not because they had to. There was no reason not to do so. Higurashi is not even close to the same league of popularity as FSN so for 07th it's more like grasping at straws here. Even then there's no real "structural limitation" with the Nasuverse, since each component is quite diverse. Nasu hasn't railroaded himself into a specific format like with RK07 (Episodic releases with 8 distinct chapters and several common plot conventions). When he deigns it time to place a new entry, he can do so and have it take whatever format he wants; you could even argue Mahoyo is an attempt at the episodic approach.

But keep in mind much of this is just my own musings, for all I know RK07 could have no such reservations at continuing to pump out the 2 Game / 8 Chapter format for future WTC releases and merely wanted to take a break.

Umineko is kindof a warped and twisted version of Higurashi, so they do have similarities. That doesn't necessarily mean that every future WTC will have to follow the same formula though, as long as they retain the same core themes every other aspect can be completely different.

e: I got bored of RGD too though. My main problem was that the plot armour that every protagonist had was just getting ridiculous. It really feels like R07 can't bring himself to perma-kill his characters.

Seems like a lot of people had trouble with RGD. As long as we're mentioning it, the reason I ended up dropping it was that the stupid minigame crap took the place of written-out fights-- and Ryukishi writes a drat good fight.

At the very least it's hard to imagine a non-fandisk WTC series as not having at least some semblance of the reset mechanic. One of the nice things about Umineko is that it was certainly aware of the expectations Higurashi players would have and thus was able to subvert them to a certain extent (it only seemed that there was a reset each time). But then that's already been done there, what do you do with a new story? I guess there's nothing inherently wrong or bad with just going through the motions with a story more similar to Higurashi's, there's just a danger of many of the parlor tricks RK07 used before not working a second time because we've come to expect them.

Maybe a Guy Ritchie approach, with lots of different perspectives centered around one narrative rather than a reset? Or maybe just one giant murder mystery with the end of one chapter leading into the start of the next?

In case anybody hasn't played them, Analogue: A Hate Story is on sale today on Steam for $1.99 and a bundle of it, Hate Plus, and their soundtracks is up for $9.99. MangaGamer has ef -the first tale- and Da Capo 2 20% off for the rest of the month, too, and some other games that are not really worth buying.

Incidentally am I wrong to write off ef as being a generic tearjerker game? I'm kind of sick of games that are just like "here's a cute anime girl and the story of the awful awful things that happen to them", so I haven't bought it.

Looks like JAST isn't delaying Steins;Gate any more, March 31st should be the really real release date. They also announced a standard edition of the game that will be coming out one month later. They have an official website up too. It's a good game, I'd highly recommend buying it when it's out.

They've got a trailer up that's kind of alright I guess?

Tatarigoroshi is getting really interesting.

  • Ooishi is a terrible human being in a way you don't expect the detective in a murder mystery to be.
  • We finally get an implicit answer as to Satoko's legal guardian; it's probably technically still her uncle.
  • I wouldn't be surprised if Ooishi dies in this one, possibly at Keiichi's hands. Then again, I looked through my previous posts and found that I confidently predicted Ooishi's death back in the first chapter.

Edit: Based on those two TIPS, I guess it's most likely that Teppei is the one who gets killed, possibly by Keiichi.

Edit 2: We're actually getting a thorough explanation of Rika and Satoko's legal situation. I'm impressed.

So I'm about an hour and a half into G Senjou no Maou, having had absolutely no idea what to expect. All I can really gather coherently from my thoughts is that its got me on the edge of my seat already, and I'm barely into the game. I'm also getting some strong 'L' type vibes from our self proclaimed 'Hero'. On top of that I'm really diggin the soundtrack, what with the mix of classical-esque music and the undertones in the other tracks referencing popular Bach compositions.

I can't wait to see where this train ends up, I feel many plot twists and awesome battles of wit, logic, and reasonaning on the way

I really liked G Senjou no Maou, but I didn't like the routes for the side heroines too much. They all take a break from the suspense plot that's developing and just tell their own boring stories. Some people recommended that you get those out of the way first but honestly if you just want to enjoy the main story I'd say do that first so you can enjoy it without interruption.

So I have like $3 in my steam wallet and Analogue: A Hate Story is on sale for $2. I vaguely remember some VNs on steam being mentioned, but I don't think there was ever a consensus on which ones were any good. I figure at $2 I'm probably not going to regret buying it, but what expectations (high or low) should I have going into it?

It's not bad for 2 dollars but people tend to really oversell Christine Love's writing prowess, subtly is not in her vocabulary and she gets her points across really hamhandedly. BUT that being said they're not bad, or unreadable or anything. I'd say it's worth reading through it but don't expect anything amazing.

Most of the G-Senjou ending branches are really straightforward "do you want to go with this character", but one of them is a lot less obvious. (Spoilered in case anyone doesn't want to know how to get endings in advance) At one point in chapter 4, there will be a crisis and you will get the option to do the sensible thing and call the police. Calling the police will get you the end for that chapter's heroine; if you don't call them the story will continue on to the next chapter.

After an extended hiatus, the I/O translation is now halfway through QC. Given the pace I'd expect it done in about two weeks. I've been looking forward to this one for quite a while, not just because I've been out of quality VNs to read. JAST is releasing a limited edition physical release and a digital release at the end of March, followed by a standard edition of the physical release in late April. The physical release can be bought from J-List, the JAST website, or rightstuf. The digital release can only be bought from J-List or JAST directly at the moment, but there have been hints at attempts to get a Steam release sometime in the future. For alternate digital releases, I think convincing 5pb to allow it is probably the difficult part.

EDIT: The digital edition is 40 dollars and the physical limited edition is 60 dollars. Pricing for the physical standard edition has not been announced, I think.

Just finished my very first Visual Novel, Ever 17. Holy crap what a mindfuck. I'll admit I skimmed quickly through a lot of the parts regarding sandwiches and hotdogs, but don't really feel like I missed anything (and thank god for the fast forward ability). The final route was by far the most mindblowing, but in terms of ending I think I prefer Sara's route. Really great though. Is there a visual novel with a more mindblowingly twisty plot?
