You also get extra stuff in Friday Monsters if you have a save from Liberation Maiden, Crimson Shroud or another game by the same developer.

It's like character extra art, not gameplay stuff but it's still pretty cool.

3DS dudes, note the Layton/Phoenix sale: Layton 5/AA5 will both be discounted until the 27th, the day of a month before the release of the crossover game. Oops.

For those who are unaware, Weapon Shop de Omasse was part of the first collection of Level-5's Guild games in Japan; it's a sorta-rhythm-based, sorta-RPG designed by the comedy duo America Zarigani, and was initially deemed unsuitable for international release due to its overwhelmingly Japanese nature. I guess the success of Friday Monsters made 'em think twice about bringing it over, who knows.

Ice Hockey is one of the games included in the upcoming NES Remix 2, so I imagine we'll get all the other missing games before it drops in April.

I've never played an Ace Attourney or Layton game before. Should I rather just get the DS copies cheap, or are these fine to start with?

Also, which of these games on the sale are good? I know Attack of the Friday Monsters is apparently a bit weird/underwhelming or something, but I think the premise of the game is so endearing that I'll probably give it a try. I have VLR on Vita so I'll rather play that there (soon as I get done with 999... right).

Speaking of NES Remix 2, it seems that Championship Mode will only work if you also have the first one, which I guess implies that games from both will be used.

I've played the original Layton trilogy for the DS and I'd recommend Unwound Future if you can get your hands on a copy - you might not know one or two important characters from the previous games but they manage to establish who they are and why they're there even if you've no idea at first. It also has the best puzzles and story of the three I've played as well.

You're probably ok picking up AA5 (Dual Destinies) and starting with that one. Each game pretty much explains the mechanics in the opening case. The characters get introduced and explained pretty well too. You should check out the DS trilogy though (Ace Attorney/Justice For All/Trials and Tribulations) because they're fantastic games (well, the 2nd has some slightly weak cases, but also one of the best cases in the series) and have a really good story running through them.

You'd be ok playing the new AA game first, but I'd strongly recommend getting ahold of the others. You'll appreciate it much more if you know the characters and they're all fantastic games.

Layton games have some connections but I'm more inclined to say you could just play the newer ones and go back later if you love them. The main reason is that while I could play all the AA games back to back to back forever, the Laytons might get a bit stale if you tried that.

Not in the near future, no. I'm pretty sure Nintendo have flat out said that they won't be releasing SNES games on the 3DS eShop, so the best you'll be able to get is the WiiU eShop.

And bear in mind, I think it's the Wii version, so it'll need to be played in Wii mode on the WiiU. The upside being that when it's released on the WiiU Virtual Console, you'll be able to just pay the upgrade price for it.

Capcom is releasing Street igther 2010 (NES) on the JP 3DS VC next week, another game that's new to the VC, interesting.

Also interesting: Nintendo is doing a first-party eShop sale in Japan over the next three weekends:

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/campaign/20140219/index.html

quote:

Weekend #1:
DKCR3D (3DS) - 20% off
DK / DK Jr. / DK3 (NES, Wii U/3DS) - 30% off

Weekend #2:
The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD (Wii U) - 20% off
Zelda / Zelda 2 (NES, Wii U/3DS) - 30% off
TLoZ: Link's Awakening (GBC, 3DS) - 30% off

Weekend #3:
Paper Mario: Sticker Star (3DS) - 20% off
Super Mario World / Super Mario Kart (SNES, Wii U) - 30% off
Mario Open Golf (NES, Wii U/3DS) - 30% off
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (GB, 3DS) - 30% off

NOE seems to mimic the JP promotions fairly consistently, NOA doesn't.

Weapon Shop de Omasse involves running a weapon rental shop inside an RPG, forging weapons for stereotypical JRPG heroes and then following their progress on a faux-Twitter feed. The original JP release seemed to get a good response, and Level-5 have spent a lot of time on the localisation, it seems.

Heads up for NA dudes who didn't notice: Aeternoblade dropped a couple days ago, no wonder why it didn't come out today as per the usual schedule. Sounds like it might be kinda okay-ish?
