Holy poo poo, was it that long ago the USSR withdrew from Afghanistan? And Rambo III is older than that? It's almost hard to believe the Cold War ended 25 years ago, too. And that probably half the people in this thread weren't even born yet when the Berlin Wall crumbled.

I could barely fit into anything armoured, leopard 1, Grizzly, Coyote (basically a LAV-III), even m577. M109 was ok though, roomy.

I'm very tall though. Tall people are not suited to military life I expect.

I don't know about the tests in the videos, but at least in some live-fire exercises they do actually maneuver to defeat the missiles.

I still remember my dad leaving to deploy, and watching the news every evening. I vividly remove him coming home and us picking him up from the airport. I was 5, so I remember that but not the wall coming down.

I watched the wall fall on live tv in England. Desert Storm was...fifth grade I think. I remember my dad went to Saudi and brought home an awesome elephant-skin wallet that the dog ate a couple of years later.

I remember being in a school band practice when our piano player gal came in and said "it's started!" And made a finger gun shoot.

It was a time of some pretty kick rear end military hardware montages on the news, I recall. That and a lot of shots of aaa fire from Baghdad.

I got to see a lot of historical events and social trends that you young people didn't. Hearing from people who were born after I graduated high school in no way reminds me of death's cold hand getting ever nearer, the stench of his breath raising the hair on my arms. Nor do I hear his smirks at every lost memory or decline in all manner of physical abilities.

So there.

I'm guessing that they won't let the F-35 "fail", in the sense that they will continue to keep throwing good money after bad to try and get it to perform how it should.

I will say that the DoD acquisition process isn't usually hesitant to cut big money programs if they don't deliver, but the F-35 is...such a big program it might really be too big to fail. Even if it fails.

But seriously if they make a plane that is quantitatively inferior to some combination of 22/18/15E, what then..

I wasn't sure, they said the current price per f-35 was $160mil or so, does that cost fall or is that normalized over the production run of 2400?

Haha yeah like it'll actually get cheaper as they go.

It wouldn't mater.

Think about it for a few minutes. Between the complete political debacle of folding on such a huge project and the very real military issue of just needing new airframes there is no other option BUT to stick with the F-35. If it sucks they'll throw money at it to make it suck less. If it's demonstrably inferior to everything out there they'll just hope really hard we don't end up at war with someone who has real air-to-air or ground-to-air capabilities before they get retired in favor of whatever comes next.

For there to be any chance of the military washing their hands of it the design would have to be so profoundly hosed that they couldn't keep enough in the air at any single time to accomplish basic peacetime missions and requirements. Even then it would probably take some crazy, massively public, catastrophic failure taking out airplanes so frequently that there was no way to deny that there was a systemic issue.
