There's a bigger list of historical air forces on Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_air_forces Some of the roundels seem totally impractical – I don't think I could tell between Egypt, Syria, and Yemen in the air.

The South African rondel is based on the Castle of Good Hope. It's a star fort in Cape Town and one of the oldest buildings, if not the oldest building in South Africa.
