I'd really love to see one of these on Can-Am racing back in the day. It matched the rise and fall of the 1960's perfectly, and that would be an excellent backdrop contrast to it. Basically a sports car series similar to the Le Mans cars of the day started up, the Canadian-American Challenge Cup, Can-Am for short. Based on the idea of Group 7 designated FIA racing sprint or hillclimb racers, it was an almost unrestricted class of race car. It started innocently enough in 1966, basically European chassis with American V8's, mostly, but run of the mill V8's making maybe 500hp. By the late 60's power had become obscene, the V8's were massive and the cars were cartoons with active aerodynamics. By 1973 Porsche had swooped in with an invincible car making 1,500hp in qualifying trim. The competition buckled, costs were unmanageable, and then the oil crisis hit, killing it off. Throw that story up against the idealism of the counter culture movement in 1966 when it starts, through to the Manson killings/Kent State/Altamont (racing tie in!), and end on the Penske/Porsche and 70's gently caress you got mine attitude contrast. That would own.

The Price of Gold (formally know as Tonya and Nancy) airs tomorrow night at 9:00. It's an hour later than the normal 30 for 30s, which usually starts at 8:00. I guess that because of the subject matter, it's going to start later.

Also, a CBB game precedes it so like so many 30 for 30 premieres, set your DVR to run long if you're not going to watch live in the likely event the game goes past 9E/6P. I think it took me 3 recordings to get through the Marcus Dupree one because it was always on after a game.

Generally they don't do first-run 30-for-30's between the Heisman ceremony and the Final Four because the majority of nights are occupied with either college or pro basketball. An exception was made for this because of the obvious Winter Olympics tie-in and I guess this was deemed the best available period to debut it.

Harding: "they did handwriting analysis and it was not my handwriting." *2 seconds later* FBI: "we did handwriting analysis and it was Tonya's handwriting." edit: It's great how Harding is still a piece of poo poo after these years: "I went to Nancy and apologized for my ex-husband organizing the plot to attack her and for her to blow me off, treat me like I was nothing, was just so mean!" It's truly hilarious how I felt almost bad for her (being too young to really understand what was going on when this was going on) and she just shits all over Kerrigan. Harding feeling victimized is priceless.

Yeah I thought it was funny that for like the first half of the documentary, you kind of want to sympathize with her And then the second half happens.

Usually by now they've announced a basketball doc for the post-Selection Sunday show slot but I guess they're not doing that this year, or they're advertising it rather late. I haven't heard of anything in the pipeline between now and the World Cup ones, but I'd be shocked if they didn't have a spring run. I guess we'll see.

Just watched Catching Hell. I enjoyed it, but wasn't blow away by it. I'd put it in the same tier as Broke, worth watching but not amazing. Growing up in the 80s/90s, You Don't Know Bo has probably been my favorite so far. Survive and Advance was beautifully done and probably the most emotional one I've seen so far. I remember being totally drawn into the Iverson one after stumbling onto it while channel surfing, which says a lot about the film because it wasn't a topic I had any interest in.

Just saw the Price of Gold and it really took me back to being just old enough that a figure skater being associated with hired goons who whacked another figure skater in the knee was completely absurd. Now I want to see a 30 for 30 on the time Katerina Witt got assassinated in Paris by an associate of Stellan Skarsgaard while being pursued by the Super IRA.

OH WORD SON- What? I remember hearing Kerrigan's shrieks of "WHY? WHYYYYY?" On TV as a kid and being horrified, so I checked out Price of Gold and was sucked in quickly. I found interesting how they found a way to make Nancy an unlikeable princess while highlighting what a petulant bitch Tonya is. As others said, the first half makes her seem sympathetic with an awful mom and a white trash husband, and then... R.D. The craziest thing in Price of Gold is Tony Kornheiser talking about how the women's figure skating finals at the olympics pulled "super bowl-esque" ratings and was on every television in every sports bar in America.

The Price of Gold was really good and it's something I have vague memories of as a kid. I wish they had somehow gotten Gillooly or Kerrigan on camera for the interview (but Gillooly's gone underground and Kerrigan gave NBC the exclusive iirc). E: Also it was on Netflix like a week after it aired

Kerrigan will be on NBC on Sunday before the Closing Ceremonies, unless there's a weather delay, at which it may air as rain/fog delay filler first.

My favorite part of The Price of Gold was the old clip of Tonya's mother being interviewed... with a parrot on her shoulder for some reason.

I also found it strange they omitted the sex tape and the professional wrestling. Tonya was an outsider in the figure skating world not because she was poor but because she was such a ridiculous caricature of poor white trash. There's probably some really interesting issues to deal with there as Kerrigan was a ridiculous stereotype of a rich princess. But the documentary really didn't delve very deeply into her background.
