I can see both sides of that coin pretty easily though, some people just don't want to slog through what they consider to be sub-par entertainment to "get to" the good stuff.

I couldn't stand Spartacus when I first watched it, but something along the way convinced me it was time to give it another go, and the rest they say, is history

Yeah, I don't blame people for not wanting to watch bad stuff on the promise of something better to come. Taste is subjective and I've slogged through too many bad shows or movies that never got better or good enough to me. So whenever someone sells me the "power through" thing I take it with a grain of salt and try and remember what other shows that person has recommended to me. "That guy didn't push Dollhouse, did he?"

It can be off-putting for a lot of people, sure. It was for me, when I first watched it. (I also grew up in the deep red rust belt, and was in the Marines before the repeal of DADT, so homophobic slurs were a way of life; it was always dude what a fag or that's gay as gently caress or other charmers along that string.) One of the things that makes Spartacus great, at least to me, is that it helped me get past all that. Because seriously, the look that Agron gives Nasir just before Agron goes off with Crixus and gets crucified is loving heart-rending. I cared more about their relationship than the one that was the catalyst of the whole loving series.

And then Agron no-sold a crucifixion. gently caress yeah.

I don't like looking at naked dudes either but I got over it. And I definitely regard that as me overcoming another bit of my homophobia, or at least my hang ups. I still don't enjoy a naked dude or a gay sex scene but I don't have to look away or make faces to feel ok about it.

Besides, the sex and nudity in Spartacus is so over the top that eventually I just get completely desensitized to it. Hot chick, hot dude, whatever. Every woman on this show is gorgeous but I wasn't getting excited during their scenes. Most of the time I ended up laughing or rolling my eyes.

Just look away. I admit that I am a bit grossed out by the most extreme examples of violence on Spartacus, but I just looked away during the worst parts of torture or the like. If somebody is grossed out by the male nudity, then he doesn't have to watch it. If that is what it takes to see this great show, then it is all right I think.

Oz shocked me out of my homophobia as a teen and made me deal with it in the harshest way. It started a long road of personal growth of being less of a baby. Then decades later Spartacus finished the job by presenting a loving gay relationship so nonchalantly that I forgot about the "gay" part and being so over the top with nudity and sex that I stopped caring when one of the most beautiful women in the world got naked and started making out with another, let alone when two dudes did.

What is the harshest way to deal with homophobia? Have sex with another man? Watch a TV show about homosex?

That's why I gave the option of 'sexist' as well. Why is it totally OK for there to be boobs and vag on TV, but the second there's a bit (because compared to the T&A there's still very little) of dick some people get uncomfortable? That's some sexism right there, sir.

It makes me happy to see that most of this thread didn't see it as a big deal though, because some dick really shouldn't be a big deal.

Except for horsecock. Everything about that dude was a big deal.

I don't think the choice is sexist; it's preference. But the industry, of course, is horribly sexist.

Really depends on what the same guys who won't watch Spartacus because of the dicks think/say to their girlfriends when they don't like shows because of female nudity.

I don't watch TV to get aroused, so I'm of the opinion that nudity is nudity and if a person is made that uncomfortable by a naked body of any gender then they probably have some deep-seated issues. Being a 20-something that gets changed in a toilet stall at the gym because you don't want to be in a room with someone else's dick is weird. Not watching a TV show for no reason other than there are some dicks, is weird. Here's an idea: not all nudity has to be sexual. Not everything that's sexual has to include nudity. If someone has a moral objection to nudity on TV, then I guess fair enough. Being all gung-ho about bouncing titties but immediately being disgusted that there's a penis is hypocritical, or sexist, or immature, or a sign of some social disorder, or some combination thereof.

I'm a hetero guy. I don't get aroused by men, naked or not. In some situations I get aroused by women, naked or not. I've still somehow managed to watch Spartacus through multiple times without either being offended/grossed out/put off by the male nudity, and neither have I felt the need to watch it alone because I've gotten so turned on that I couldn't keep my hands off myself. In fact, the first time I watched it, I watched most episodes with my male roommate in the room.

Am I weird for thinking that maybe naked people are just naked people?

Tom Brady
Oct 17, 2008

by Fluffdaddy
No, but you're weird for thinking that "its just nudity, not sexual" applies to Spartacus all that much.

Also, generally people getting changed off by themselves are usually more ashamed of their own bodies than other peoples.

MY COCK RAGES ON, MY COCK RAGES ON

But seriously I never could understand the actual lyrics to that song. The closest I could get is:

"My cock rages on, my cock rages on
I put you down I give no poo poo
I piss on your grave for the sport of it
And when I die expect no less
My mind is gone (???) my cock rages on!"

For reference here is a clip of it.
