BigFactory posted:Edit: I just looked at that preamp. Do you already have a receiver? I'm not sure how that unit exactly fits into your system. The TT you picked out already has USB out, and might have a built in preamp? You're right, I meant to look for a receiver. It does have a built in pre amp but don't I need something to power the speakers? I'll look for one now. I have no idea what to look for though. It's my understanding I need a turntable, receiver and speakers right? Why get the floor standing speakers instead of bookshelf? I think i'm just gonna stick with new speakers starting out. thank you for the help! These speakers? I don't mind spending a little more if it's a good value. http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-FS...+Jones+pioneers spacebrospiff fucked around with this message at 20:08 on Feb 16, 2014 |

I dunno, plug in a set of similar-vintage speakers and a turntable and get into some crusty old-school hifi? The preamp is 1982-1995 vintage, the amp is 1986-1995. So while it's not "old-school" old-school, they're still classic pieces of kit. I'm not sure if they have any kind of real resale value, but they look kinda funky and special, and the amp has a special "current dumping" construction, whatever that is. The tilt control on the preamp is a funny little thing, it lets you boost bass while lowering treble at the same time, or vice versa. It's an odd way to constrain tone controls. Another funny thing to note is the British preference for banana plugs on speaker cables. Naim takes this to the extreme and even forgo RCA plugs in favor of BNC and DIN plugs. Alright, thanks for the all the help. I picked up a Marantz 2220B http://www.classic-audio.com/marantz/2220b.html and I'm going to pick up The PRO-JECT - DEBUT III PIANO BLACK TURNTABLE http://www.amazon.com/PRO-JECT-DEBU...BLACK+TURNTABLE Pioneer SP-BS22-LR Andrew Jones Designed Bookshelf Loudspeakers http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-BS...lf+Loudspeakers Just need cables I guess. Is the 70 dollars for the Debut III worth it over the AT-LP120-USB? This hobby seems expensive haha... spacebrospiff fucked around with this message at 16:07 on Feb 17, 2014 |

It was listed as a "Buy it Now" for $155 or best offer, so I just gave an offer of $125 and woke up to find it accepted.

BigFactory posted:Drunken ebaying can be dangerous! He's not kidding about this. Case in point, I am now the owner of THREE vintage turntables. After making the offer on the first one last night, I put out a few lowball bids on a couple others, figuring I wouldn't win. Turns out I won both. In addition to the aforementioned Technics SL-D3, I also have a Sanyo Plus Q40 and a Pioneer PL-514X. I only paid $45 for each of these. The Sanyo seems like it's probably the lowest-end of the three, but I'm going to do a little research to see how the Pioneer compares to the Technics. And if they're all in working order (which they're supposed to be), I can always do a listen-test to determine which I like best, and then it's off to Craigslist with the other two. Be careful on ebay out there!

I've had bad luck with monoprice banana plugs. A bunch of them were so loose they just fell out of the banana jacks from the weight of the speaker wire (16 ga)

I recently got a job rescuing and selling old stereo equipment, computers, and electronics at a recycling place. I grabbed a Sansui AU-222 to take it home and test it. Having listened to this thing I can't help but feel like I've taken the first steps down a very dangerous path. My only solace is that it's only 18 WPC, so it can barely drive my speakers. but my god, my $7 80s Mitsubishi system sounds so crappy now atomicthumbs fucked around with this message at 08:39 on Feb 19, 2014 |

So im trying to set up the TT but I'm dumb and for some reason the tonearm pulls to the outside only after I put on the anti skate weight. Am I doing something wrong? I think I set up correctly and I used youtube videos to make sure.

Did you set anti skate after VTF? Is the anti skate equal to or less than the VTF? If so it should be fine.

I'm dumb, I fixed it, thanks though. All the videos made it seem like you were pushing the whole counterweight anterior and posterior initially to balance when all I had to do was twist it. I was pleasantly surprised when I heard faint music coming out of it. Just need the receiver...

I'm selling that Sansui AU-222 now. SA-Mart thread is here. I'll be selling future high-end audio stuff (I've got a bunch of McIntosh, Marantz, NAD, Pioneer, Carver, H/K, and so on to work through) on eBay and posting it in that thread. Would folks here be interested in updates as I post stereo things?

My right channel went all muffled and weird on my receiver (Both A and B speaker inputs) and the balance knob doesn't seem to do anything (I don't think that ever worked). Is my first step deoxit or is there something else I should try instead?

Sure, it would be interesting if you could go through the various units, any special features or neat designs, with lots of pictures of course. If you could even open them up and show us some of the internal designs, that would be neat What kinds of vintages are we talking about?

I've got zillions of things to go through, and have everything from Onkyo A/V surround sound switchampreceiver things to Bang and Olufsen turntables with the power cords chopped off by the garbage collector (who sends us their e-waste after taking the cords for themselves). And I'll try to do that, but I don't know very much about a lot of these things!
