Hey, just on the slavery thing: Shouldn't Haiti get the honor of abolishing it first, at least in the western hemisphere? I hardly see how the US should get that (even in the institutional chattel sense), since they only got to more or less abolish it for good because they maintained it far longer than anyone else.

We beat Brazil (abolished in 1888) by a few decades. In fact, some die-hard Confederates left the States after the Civil War and moved to Brazil specifically because they still allowed slavery. IIRC, their descendants still have a "Dixie Days" celebration every year.

The Texas tears are pretty delicious, it's hard to believe we're about to get a fresh round of wailing and gnashing... AZ Gov Jan Brewer to make statement at 5:45pm MST. Spoiler alert: she veto'd the "don't serve the gays" bill, with some surprisingly strong words about how useless a bill it was. nhwingut posted:Not only did she veto it but she sounded like a lib with her remarks. The gay mafia is extremely powerful. Viennacon posted:Christians need to stop blindly voting GOP. If we need to make these people lose, then so be it. Especially in these statewide races. What’s the point in anyone of religious virtue supporting someone who will throw their liberties in the trash at the first dollar sign? It is time to punish the disgusting GOP who lined up behind this veto like the North Korean navy. McSHAME, Flake, Romney, Ayotte. Screw ‘em all.

After a while you stop being angry and depressed and start enjoying the fact that not only can they do nothing but vote the GOP/Tea Party to nowhere, but they're furious and lashing out because somewhere in the reptile section of their brain they realise that this is the most impact they'll ever have on the world.

Even a national referendum that came out in FReep's favor would be unconstitutional. There'd have to be a Constitutional Amendment to hold back the tide now, and that ship sailed ~1992.

You might be homosexualer, but I'm the homosexualest. Also I'm glad to hear that the Confederacy apparently set the example for the Nazis of fleeing a lost war to South America in order to "preserve their culture". I wonder if there are little clones of Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee sharing a school with Dr. Mengele's boys.
