I fought the lava, and the lava won.
I was going to apologize, but looking back on the last few posts, I don't think I'm the one who needs to apologize. (Funny stuff, though.) For the first time since the LP started, Rover and I have been unable to record the grinding video during the run of the chapter, so it's going to be late. At any earlier time, I might have delayed the end of the chapter a few days to wait, but after spending a week bedridden with the flu (it got to the point where I was watching PewDiePie videos to keep myself occupied), I want to get back to the game, and this video is one that I've been anticipating from the very beginning, so I'm just going to post it now, and I'll fill in the grinding video as soon as it's done. Hopefully, later this week.

As for today's out-of-order update, this is no ordinary boss video. True, we get to meet Fleshrum in the, well, flesh, but we're also getting close enough to the end of the game to get some answers to some of the many significant questions that have arisen from the mystery so far. It's time to get some backstory filled in.

Keats Chapter 4 - Folklore Youtube

And despite skipping a video for the moment, that means that VOTING IS OPEN for which character's story we'll take on next. We can go back and see what Ellen's been up to during chapter 4, or we can carry on with Keats' investigation in chapter 5. I know how the results have historically gone when we're voting for two different chapters, but I figure if there's ever going to be a cliffhanger that pulls votes for the character that's further ahead, it's this one.

So Livane changed the netherworld so people forgot about it, interesting. And I guess the Faery Lord wants to change it back? I wonder why - more power?

Interesting! I think we need to see Ellen's side, because until now the Faery King has been coming across as a shady guy and if there is a chapter that might make him more sympathetic, it is this one.

If awareness of mortality freed humans to try and trascend it but also doomed the Faery Realm to slow and certain Oblivion, then this is bound to get very interesting down the road.

Okay, well, Ellen's pulled pretty far ahead overnight, so I think I may as well call it for the foregone conclusion. VOTING IS OVER and I'll start working on Ellen's Chapter 4 possibly as early as today, depending on whether I can get the grinding video commentary done today.

I've got some bad news and some news that could potentially be seen as bad - Rover's pretty tied up lately and had to bail completely on the grinding video for this chapter (that's definitely bad, not just potentially), so we're going to try to make it up with a longer video for Ellen's grind that will cover all the Endless Corridor Folks, and probably the same arrangement for future chapters. That will hopefully make things a bit easier schedule-wise and cut down on the need to fill time once he's used up his stock of information. The downside is that now I have no plans for the grinding video, so I'm scouring Skype for anyone who can step in. If anyone who's been following the LP wants to spend half an hour talking about philosophy and death, or any other semi-relevant topic, while I kill a few dozen Pouke with Habetrot in the background, feel free to hit me up on Skype at nidoking042 and we can try to arrange something - if you don't make the cut for this video, there will be more videos later, and it's always nice to get to chat with people who like my LPs.

The potentially bad news is that I recorded the first half of Ellen's part of the chapter, and it's going to take considerably more editing than usual to make something watchable out of this - the portion of the story that plays when she leaves the Netherworld to do quests is significant enough (despite the fact that we've already seen most of it) that I don't want to tack it on the start of the quest video, and once again, there's no particularly natural break point in the chapter to split the combat video. The quests are probably going to seem pretty repetitive too, and I don't want to think about how long it's going to take to grind even just for the materials to build up the Folks I actually use. So there's likely to be a bit of a delay before the new chapter gets underway. Hopefully, there will be a grinding video as well as the Bestiary for Keats to bridge that gap, but I figured I'd better let everyone know in advance that there could be a wait before we see Ellen's side of the story. At least there are still some surprises, even though we already know the conclusion that it will be building up to.

It's possible that I could have done a better job cleaning up the audio for this video, but I think I've spent enough time on it. This time, Keats is grinding in the Faery Realm and Endless Corridor, and the first person who responded to my request for guests was Sweet and Awful, who hasn't been following the LP so far. So this was a chance to look at the game from a fresh perspective and review how everything goes, as well as a bit of discussion on the nature of death in various fictional settings. If nothing else, it's a chance to see how effective Habetrot is at attacking all sorts of enemies - as long as those sorts are Pouke and Andraste. I kill a LOT of Poukes, and that's probably going to become standard in future chapters. Spriggan is particularly annoying to grind... and almost all of the grinding in this chapter is much, much easier for Keats than for Ellen. Just a preview of what's coming starting next week...

Ellen's dialogue in the second-latest video always struck me as a bit odd, because now it sounds like she's reading off really wordy lines from a script, whereas before she always sounded a bit more natural. At least with Keats, we know he has a penchant for saying overly dramatic stuff and doing inappropriately creepy laughs, but seeing Ellen say stuff like "Do I dare to uncover the horrors of my past?" makes it sound like she's auditioning for a high school play instead.

Also, I never fail to laugh at the scene where Keats is reading off Ingrid's letter: the constant capitalization makes him like he's yelling rather loudly rather than reading to himself, and the mental image of him screaming Mrs. Lester's ears off is just too much. :allears:

Not to say the storytelling isn't good or anything; the plot twists make it very apparent that the game knows what it's doing, but it's hard not to be amused sometimes when the writing (or maybe the translation) takes a few fumbles here and there. :v:

I think it might make a bit more sense once we've seen Ellen's side of the story and found out what it is about her past that she's so afraid of, but the writing in this chapter definitely seems clunkier to me than in previous chapters. I assume the translators were running out of time when they got here.

Hopefully, we'll be getting that part of the story in a few weeks, but I'm trying to get the grinding video edited and sent to Rover as soon as I can to maximize the chance that we'll be able to record this time, so I haven't started any of the other commentaries for the chapter yet. It's a pretty annoying chapter in quite a few ways, actually, but the Folks may be the worst part of all. Speaking of which, while the thread's risen to attention, here's Keats' Bestiary for the chapter a bit early, in the hope that I manage to get a video done this weekend.

I'm expecting to have a lot less free time over the next few weeks, so the videos may slow down or stop completely for a while, but I plan to push ahead as much as I can. In this week's video, Ellen starts to investigate how Cecilia fits into the mysteries of past and present - it's a bit odd at this point because we know the answers, but I think the chapter works better having seen Keats' side first, because now we get to see the impact that the revelations will have on Ellen. We'll also probe quite a bit more deeply into O'Connell's role in the story, which was only barely hinted at in optional dialogue in Keats' chapter. Finally, it's time for the last words of a dearly departed friend.

We'll be hearing the Faery Lord's side of the story later in the chapter. It's one of those interesting conflicts where each side has a convincing rationale for their actions and it's pretty much a matter of opinion which side is right.

Should be interesting to see how Ellen deals with this realm. Keats had the 'home turf' advantage of already being an ally of sorts with Livane, whereas Ellen supposedly is working against her.

Then again, Livane didn't seem to have anything against Ellen personally, so who knows?

(Yes, that's a self portrait)
Catching up right now, because I've been very remiss in watching the videos of this interesting game, but Annwn is... a thorny one for me. I skipped ahead to the grinding video from where I am now, and... There's a fair bit only someone knowledgable in both welsh language and myth would probably miss.

First and foremost, while Annwn (An-noon) definitely fills the basic idea of a "fairy realm" or "land of the dead" (two of the most common translations), it's nowhere near as simple as that. For a start, we welsh are a very literal people, and our language equally so, so if it had been considered a "realm of the dead" or "fairy land", it would have been called either tir meirw (teer mey-roo, lit. "Land [of the] dead"), or tir twlyth teg (teer two-loyth tehg, "Land of the fair kindred"). But instead, it is "annwn", a word that has no direct translation save one that makes no sense. Especially considering it's linguistic prefix.

"An", as a prefix, is a privative. It's meant to indicate that something doesn't have a property, and is itself a corruption of "Na" (nah "no, not"). This is, sadly, a little known aspect of the language, but there we go. Another version is "Án", which has multiple meanings, including cease, depart, reach, and go (quickly). But then we have "nwn", which is not a part of the welsh language. There is, however, a very similar word we can linguistically get to easily if we assume the "wn" (unn) sound is the primary phoneme: hwn (hoonn, approximately), which literally means "This", but is often used in place of "yma" (uh-mah, "here"). So either we have it as an instruction (go here), which is unlikely, but still plausible, or we have... "not here".

Keep in mind, that while Annwn is indeed the source of some interesting figures, artefacts, and the like which have rules that seem to correspond to fair folk paradigms, we also have a hell of a lot of that going on with the main characters of the Mabinogion and other myth cycles we've managed to salvage. Shapeshifting, illusion, arbitrary rules... We even have a mythological character whose possible means of death is even more obscure than Achilles, and for less reason: Lleu Llaw Gyffes (forgive me if I just link you to an awful tindeck thing I made about welsh sounds, because trying to write the sound of "ll", "ch", or "dd" phonetically is just a headache.)

Then there's the fun times with Gwyn Ap Nudd. Gwyn Ap Nudd is mostly mentioned after the christianisation of the Welsh, which introduces its own problems, did not, in fact, appear in the second branch of the Mabinogion (where he supposedly had a hand in escorting Bran the giant's head to its final resting place), and most of the stuff after he was meant to have a major role in the mythos is standard "Hey, this thing's not christian, therefore it's evil and... oh, hey, holy water worked, who knew?", which should always be taken with a grain of salt, as far as pre-christian myths later transcribed by christians during the 12th-15th centuries go.

Why don't we have a better translation? Because ours was an oral tradition, and so our main sources of myths are a couple of extremely old, very badly written post christian collections... Which, as you might imagine, makes deciphering the myth cycle a right pain in the arse.

I think they all look pretty much like that. I don't know whether there's any meaning to the shapes or not.

Anyway, obviously, I don't have an update ready for this weekend - my voice has been pretty unstable all week, and I still don't know whether it will stand up to the kind of prolonged use that commentating a combat video would require. I'm going to try some shorter, less dense videos today as a test, and I may be able to start posting videos later in the week, but until then, there's going to be a brief hiatus. At least, without the added time pressure, I managed to edit both parts down to a little under 40 minutes instead of considerably over. I don't think anything of value was lost, since most of Ellen's Chapter 4 Folks are pretty useless, so I don't show them off very much.
