I always do a cheese-ball dubstep remix of a Christmas song during the holidays. This year I decided to gently caress up The Christmas Shoes, as it is one of the worst of the modern classics. I hope you enjoy my remix, Glitchmas Shoes. https://soundcloud.com/gkchestertron/glitchmas-shoes

I genuinely hate Mannheim Steamroller, so naturally I spent a week doing a note-for-note remake of their Carol of the Bells arrangement with glitchy and dubsteppy flourishes and a Trap breakdown for this year's SA Christmas album. https://soundcloud.com/ultimateoutsider/manntrap-steproller-carol-of A-Surgery- your Christmas Shoes was pretty dope. Behind all things Mannheim, Christmas Shoes is at the top of my most hated holiday songs list.

The B-side on this little release is our cover of Inaction by We Are Scientists. We wrote and recorded it in about a week for a whole album of covers (multiple bands covering the entirety of With Love And Squalor) that never really went anywhere. So, we dumped it on a festive release so that a few people might actually hear it. Enjoy! http://gagreflex.bandcamp.com/album/give-the-gift-of-gag

I did a quick "cover" of a Mario Paint song. It's a weird choice for a cover since it's hard to add anything to it while retaining the feel of the original, but I love the song and I wanted to make something, so here it is. https://soundcloud.com/dizzywhip/mario-paint-bgm-3 dizzywhip fucked around with this message at 14:59 on Feb 20, 2014 |

I've been working on my voice relentlessly for a while, but haven't really made any progress. I record myself and listen back, sing along to scales, took lessons until they became too expensive. I have a naturally low voice too which doesn't help, especially for pop tunes. I really want to sing, I just don't get how to do it. I'll keep practicing, no idea if I'll ever actually get it though. Guitar is Am7-Fmaj7#11-Cmaj7 for the verse (instead of Am, F, C). Am7-Fmaj7#11-Cmaj7-G for the chorus (instead of Am, F, C, G). It's an awesome chord progression, I was hoping it's airiness would make my voice 'fit' in more.

You had professional singing lessons hence you actually don't really need my advise because I'm shure your teacher mentioned this: Your are not missing notes all the time in the sense of hitting wrong notes but you are missing to sing all the notes there are in a melody. That's why you sound monotonous, because it literally is. I have the same problem and I found it often helps to play only the vocal line on the guitar or piano and sing along with that. Then you will notice if all the notes are actually coming out of your mouth or just a few of them. I'm more passionate than musically gifted so likely I won't notice that "in the mix" with the chords because it never sounds really off. I sometimes count the notes in a tune and countercheck that with the number of notes I have sung. This approach is different from the feeling of a natural musical genius but also leads so reasonable results.

Here's a quick cover of the Trampled By Turtles song "Wait So Long": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5tZWIHVXWk It's weird looking at other covers of this on Youtube, because it seems like half the people trying it ended up coming up with a completely different (and wrong) set of chords, which is kinda hard to believe since the whole song is just the same four repeated the whole way through. Edit: Also, this is awesome magnificent7 posted:My two favorite covers that I did that took the song in a totally different direction are "I Just Can't Wait To Be King" from the Lion King:

Life's tough for the deep voiced musician who just wants to cover some maroon 5 (I'm in the same boat). I've found a pretty cool niche with 20th century Irish folk tunes. The best advice I would give myself if I could go back in time is "accept your vocal range. Don't try to learn to sing on songs out of your range.". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aa7birRBmNM If that's too high do it in a different key.

Finally finished the track I started when I was messing around with new drum mics at Christmas. Turned out significantly more redneck-y than I originally intended, but I'm happy with it. User Friendly (Marilyn Manson). EDIT: aaaaaand I just figured out that somebody hosed up a cable in the studio and the right monitor wasn't working properly, which is why everything panned to that side is so loud when you listen to it with working speakers. If it helps, I tend to get pretty nasal too when I sing quiet - the secret I've learned is that the opposite of nasal is breathy when you're singing, so try singing really ridiculously breathy and it usually comes out pretty good through a mic.
