The only advantage to working in an at will state is that you could basically go to work for a competitor after being fired without having to worry about any non-compete clauses.

Day 1 at new job was awesome. Granted, it only day 1 of the 4 week training, so basically just introductions and building tour, but man I am stoked to be working there. Also, this will be the first job in 9 years with a "normal" 8 hour working day.

Alright so, I take the evening off, and suddenly Paladine_PSoT, one of the sharpest minds in the forum is having trouble finding a job and questioning his own qualifications, and Sickening/madmaan, another poster I'm always making sure to pay attention to so I can hope to reach that level, got fired. The hell, I need to not take my eyes off this place.

A  came in.Job title has the word 'Consultant' in, nearly doubled my previous (admittedly quite poo poo) salary, get to specialise more instead of being a jack of all trades. Finally feels like I'm starting a career instead of just working to live. Time for a beer.

A legit MSCE and backed with experience is worth quite a bit, it's been buzzwordified because the HR managers are just copying and pasting poo poo into a posting. Example: 15 years experienced VCP in VMware vSphere 4.x/5.x in many job postings. HR managers typically have no idea what there asking, same can be said to IT Managers who are out of touch with their IT department. Which can give you job postings asking for a CCNP, MSCE, VCP, and RHCSA. When really all they are asking for is a competent Windows Admin who understands networking, virtualization, and a bit of linux. What's the general consensus on having battery backups in your rack at a co-location facility? We have one with a dead battery in it, and the replacement is here but I probably won't get to install it for another couple days since I have to drive 2 hours to get there. It's not a huge deal because we've never lost power there, and our failover setup isn't really what you call 'working', it'd be more like "drive down there and get our servers and backup data etc and bring them back here and set it up in temporary office space" to be honest. Anyway, a quick Google search turns up that some co-location facilities don't even allow you to put a UPS in your rack. I know our location has a bunch of generators and a huge rack of batteries and crap.

Applying to poo poo through Indeed got me the most responses. LinkedIn is poo poo if you're actively looking for work (as opposed to just having an up to date profile and having people contact you with offers) because it hides stuff like salary information unless you pay for a job seekers account.

Linkedin hasn't been too great for me for my area. I feel like you would have to connect with every person you know or have ever known to get it producing for you and I don't want to go down that road. Indeed is really solid. Probably my favorite. I think its the cheapest for employers too.

I'm prepared to answer a lot of questions with "While I don't know exactly how to do this, I'd find the info by _______." I just don't want to worry about that biting me in the rear end and becoming the guy who just applies for everything he can't do. In my case I have a Net+, studying for CCNA and I'm currently on the help desk but I'm on loan to the networking group for a few months (grunt work while the seniors are at a new site). I'd like to apply for the wireless specialist job which wants 5 years of experience that I clearly don't have.

One thing that might help as well is working out how long it will take you to get to speed with the position. If it fits in with the demand of the role, it should be easy to sell it to the hiring manager that way.

Ugh... what a bummer, my probation is almost up and I had my appraisal today, after more than an hour of very useful/positive feedback I was denied a pay rise. In one hand it's kind of understandable since the IT/VOIP services we subscribe to handle the major stuff. But on the other hand I'm still the one guy maintaining and developing for the CRM (Salesforce) which is the lifeblood of the business, as well as constantly reconfiguring the phone system upon request and with changing staff, and doing various tech support; like last week the all-in-one PC I ordered shipped with a loose HDD and I drove to the other office to fix. I'm pretty much a terrible negotiator, but I disagreed with keeping my pay at £15,000 and will try to get this discussed again as I'm feeling very shortchanged. Especially since; - My wife earns £20,000 working in a call center, and the friend I roped into the business earns more than me as the office admin. - I'm orchestrating the migration of our IT equipment and services as we're moving office, going on site surveys to plan out networking with a contractor etc. At the very least if I can stick out and get the basic and advanced Salesforce certs, there are some tasty jobs out there for it.

Also the exchange rate is very favorable for the UK right now, ~1.60 USD to 1 GBP. That said, yes, 15k in either currency for an IT position is terrible. Especially if you're somewhere like London with insane cost of living.

Finished my second day of training. The conversation mostly went from Day 1: Magic The Gathering / Warhammer / World of Warcraft to Day 2: Superman vs. The Hulk. Lots of wasted time here. Anyways, still super pumped to be doing this now! Can't wait to take some actual calls. My question is, what is the general pay increase going from contracted to permanent? I have a 4 month contract right now at $22.88/hr. There's been a lot of talk in the training about how just about everybody gets an offer to be permanent. So, what should I expect here? I've heard that my recruiter can be getting paid as high as $35/hr for me and that I should expect to see somewhere near that level when taken on to perm, but I've also heard different. Just wondering how these things generally work and how I should approach it when the time comes.
