I'm still laughing at "The Sexual Revolution." Part of me wants him to be an elaborate troll, while the other part really wants my future child to bring home a history book with a chapter on the sexual revolution. That's gonna be the name of my new house/trance playlist. cname fucked around with this message at 21:32 on Mar 5, 2014 |

He definitely didn't make up the term "sexual revolution". It's basically shorthand for "we talk openly about sex and having sex now and we didn't before," often with the subtext of "AND THAT'S WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS COUNTRY". I want to say it's generally supposed to have happened in the 70s or thereabouts. As opposed to The Sexy Revolution, the 27-part Washington/Cornwallis slash epic that I'm sure someone, somewhere has written.

But there probably is a chapter in most history books about the sexual revolution. This is right up there with the goon who thought "impregnate" didn't mean "get someone pregnant" or whatever that was all about.

Half a century earlier than that there was a huge buzz when growing sexual openness led to the popularity of women's swimsuits that didn't cover the legs! Gasp!

Nessa posted:Did you not learn about the sexual revolution in school or something? The sexual revolution is grossly misrepresented in most schools. It is generally painted as a liberating time where sex is free to all, but it was actually just a facet of patriarchal power in that men still had all the choosing ability in relationships, and women were used more easily.

jfc when the pill became readily available women could suddenly enjoy sex without suffering drastic consequences. this happened to coincide with the vietnam war, when an entire generation of young people got fed up with traditional values regarding sex drugs employment etc and starting banging like crazy because the worst consequences of sex could be removed with a penicillin shot. call your mom and ask her about it ffs, it was a p interesting time in history. there's this band y'all should check out too, called the beatles.

My history curriculum was just various repeats of how the United States were made and European history up to (but not including) WW1. It's funny how they left out all the controversial parts which yes, they are controversial, but said controversy IS part of our country's history. Grades 1-3: Colonizing the US Grades 3-6: European history up to (but not including) WW1. Grades 6-8: Colonizing the US the first half of the year, then European history up to (but not including) WW1, the 2nd half of the year. Grade 9: European history up to (but not including) WW1. Grade 10: European history up to (but not including) WW1 the first half of the year, then colonizing the US the 2nd half of the year. Grade 11: Colonizing the US Grade 12: European history including the smallest amount of WW1 as possible. I really wish I was joking. To be fair, there was some Asian history peppered in. I had to learn the following history topics from the internet and documentaries. Public school did not even come close to touching upon... -World war 1 -World war 2 -Vietnam -Korean war -The Berlin wall (See quote "up to but not including WW1") -Israel vs Palestine -Desert storm -Babylon and the middle east -Soviet union -The black power struggle (we learned about slavery, but the black panthers/Oakland,CA/MLK was never really a topic) cname fucked around with this message at 18:30 on Mar 6, 2014 |

I learned about the sexual revolution from watching movies where everyone was loving and doing drugs in the 60's/70's but I never would have known there was a name for it if I hadn't gotten into feminism on my own.

Well in all fairness it's not exactly something that has a clear manifesto or leaders. It was more of a cultural commercialist movement than one based on actual philosophical ideas. Yes there was lots of academic style feminist writing on the abstract theory of it. There was also lots of rabble-rousing and crossover with the other big social movements of the time. But about the closest thing you can get to a popular contemporary statement about what the Sexual Revolution actually was would probably be Sex and the Single Girl by Helen Gurley Brown. And uh...well, let me put it this way. An MRA could read that book and it would validate most of their horrible beliefs about women.
