The general consensus so far seems to be that I suffer from "dad posting poo poo that nobody else would want to see," but I'm trying to improve on that. Besides the "make me care" part, I'd love to hear if there are any other obvious portrait failures happening here.

All these pictures are from the 1860s-1870s: This is gonna sound reallllll pretentious but using natural light well is one of those things you really have to just practice and practice at. I'd say the thing I find most people lack ( I end up on more student sets than I should) is an understanding of negative fill. Anyone who's been in a studio which is painted totally white will know what I mean. I obviously don't know how Cameron approached her work, but were I to try and recreate the portrait of the man I would seat him below a high window upstage of the subject and to camera right, that's the obvious bit, taken from the shadows and the catchlights in his eyes. I would probably place flags (black fabrics mounted to C-Stands) either side of the window, so that the light was only striking him, and bring a flag in close to him, up to the camera left, downstage portion of his face, to remove any fill from the ambient and increase contrast across the face. She's very very good at picking the angle of light, and I'm sure the tonality and unique colour response of her medium helps the image significantly. But often I find cutting light more beneficial in creating a dramatic mood than adding it. I hope that made sense.

Wish the guy in the foreground wasn't quite so into the frame, but I do like the sense of depth it gives. What's he thinking? by kschruder, on Flickr I'm taking a 5-week course that is basically Intermediate photography. They assume you know the basics of exposure and how to use your camera, so they take that to the next step and give you lessons on how to use it creatively. Just did week 1 which was basically a refresher and making sure people understood the exposure triangle and all that.

IMG_6653-Edit-2 by Paul Hofreiter, on Flickr I am not too used to shooting with a 70-200 so will be practicing a lot this coming spring - it is an interesting difference being so far removed from the subject. My mom (in this picture) is pretty uncomfortable in front of cameras I think, and we were just going for a walk when I took this (not expecting or going out to shoot) during a break at work. The distance both isolates and insulates the subject I think. Anyways, too blown out on the highlights? I did my first try at lessening wrinkles by healing them out and putting them back in at a lower opacity, seemed to be an effective way to not totally smooth out the face in an unrealistic way.

Those aren't lit very well and you need to clean up those edges in every photo. But more importantly, the compositions and ideas behind them are ghastly.

What about the lighting is terrible? I mean, I know I'm pretty novice at this, but is seems all pretty well lit to me. Not flat, decent contrast. I'm not sure how else to quantify it. I see some green I forgot to remove from the backdrop, though.

MOD CHALLENGE rcman420 or whatever, your challenge is to create a photograph expressing the concept of "idiot piss garbage for a clown at the circus", using neither literal piss nor literal garbage. Photoshop use is not permitted other than adjusting levels and such. Should you complete this challenge, this thread will forever be prohibited from making fun of any of the photos I just quoted. Should you fail to complete this challenge, bad things will happen. The challenge is open to all, and anyone who delivers a superior product will be allowed to choose the contents of a big ol' redtext title for you (worksafe), and be declared God-King of the Portrait Thread for one week (it is not entirely clear what this entails). If you choose to dodge the "no Photoshop" rule by using GIMP, you will also be required to post a narrated YouTube video at least five minutes in length detailing your ideas and methods when processing the photograph. Images will be judged by both myself and William T Hornaday because I like his username. You have one week.

It is an excuse - a terrible one - and it's insulting to the people you're asking to critique your work. "I didn't work very hard on this and put little to no thought into it, tell me how to improve" doesn't invite helpful criticism.
