Jake Armitage posted:Your definition of Occam's Razor says that if we don't know something, the best explanation is "we don't know". Also, "the simplest explanation is the correct one" and "the simplest explanation is correct" are the same thing. No. My definition (and the definition of Occam's razor) says that we choose what we do know and what we do have facts for. If you consider "the simplest explanation is the correct one" and "the simplest explanation is correct" to be the same thing then I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you are not a native English speaker. Or even an English speaker. Or even a speaker. I mean for fucks sake this poo poo is on the wikipedia page for crying out loud and apparently you can't even be bothered to check that before you try to debate me. The wiki sums it up thus: The sun, moon and other solar system planets can be described as revolving around the Earth. Still that explanation is unnecessarily complex compared to the modern consensus that all solar system planets revolve around the Sun. We know the plane has disappeared. We know this. We have no doubt about this. And yet you have just stated that it has obviously "exploded into dust over the ocean"; whilst that may have happened you have not, in any way argued against my fact. Until you can give any sort of explanation as to how the plane has not disappeared you are directly working against Occam's razor. I am constantly amazed by how people can be so confused by this principle but hopefully this makes it clear for you

Copley Depot posted:"The plane disappeared" is an observation. "Occam's razor" pertains to hypotheses for why the plane disappeared. Specifically, it says that we should prefer the most parsimonious hypothesis for why the plane disappeared. Could you possibly rewrite that without using words you clearly just stole from the wikipedia article I told you to read. Thanks

The plane didn't disappear. We just don't know where it is, or the condition it's in. When you put the cat outside for the night it doesn't disappear, you just don't know where it is. Even if the cat explodes over the ocean and never comes home it didn't disappear, if anything it was more visable while on fire. Even if the cat crashed into the ocean like this plane obviously did, you could still see it if you knew where to look.

The reality is that nobody knows where the plane is so it exists in a hyperstate where it neither exists nor doesn't exist. It's not until we find the plane that the wave function collapses and everyone is either dead or on Mars.

To be fair the idea of using Occam's Razor to justify saying "The pilot did a suicide" in addition to "The plane crashed" is preeeety dumb. The simplest explanation is that the plane crashed, but once you start getting into the reasons it crashed then that blows simple out the window. We know that the pilot willfully changed course and followed a bunch of nav beacons, so that kind of rules out "Eh well mate you see the rudder probably fell off at some point" and you have to start considering crazier poo poo.
