btw if you already know django and python, you can learn asp.net in your spare tiem in like two weeks and 90% of that time will be spent learning c#. the actual asp.net lifecycle/libraries will be cake to anyone who's done django

maybe rails just isn't popular in philly. cut bait for what's biting, not for what you wish was under the water i realize you hated new york but guess what, not everyone gets to have their dream career in their hometowns. gotta compromise on something. maybe that something is your stack/platform. maybe it's your location. maybe it's your industry. yeah, i didn't mean it to sound as all over the place as it came across. the scala thing just kind of came out of nowhere since it seemed like a decent opportunity so i'll have to see what happens. the rails market in philly is actually pretty strong i'd say, but the problem with the companies here is that they're hilariously delusional about what they think they're going to get talent-wise (i.e. they expect sf/ny/austin/seattle talent), so companies have been in perpetual hire mode forever but don't really hire anyone. a guy who's been in the field a long while who works with my company on occasion as a contractor agreed. most of the more known people here either work for comcast or one of maybe 3-4 "big" companies in the area. i like where i work and the people i work with, but most of the time i'm on my own and there's a lack of communication about a lot of things. a couple of the devs work from home just about all the time, so i've mostly given up on learning anything from any of them aside from a bit of the business aspect of things. i don't loathe rails or anything but we work on a shitload of rails 2 stuff and it blows so changing stacks is totally cool if i find something else. i just kind of take it in stride right now even if i come across like i hate it. experience is experience.
