stop being so loving picky. learn some other languages and apply to dozens of jobs.

the last time i was job searching my rule of thumb was a minimum of 3 contacts a day, 15 a week. a "contact" is a phone call, drafting a cover letter, or a face-to-face. no networking events count.

i was literally fielding 20+ calls every week.

if you're doing less, you're not searching for a job, you're waiting and hoping someone notices your shitposting and magically gives you money

i'm probably legit going to spend some time with c#/asp.net (mvc probably), i just need to get vs installed again. i do have an onsite interview tomorrow for a mostly scala gig (with the implication that i'd have to learn it being understood). the details of what i'd be doing sound cool and i can work from home so i'll have to see how it goes.

you just mentioned four technologies in one post, none of which you know anything about. do you see why people on the 'pos poke fun at your uninformed opinions?

pick one thing and get good enough at it to get hired. then learn from smarter people on your team

if that isn't working for you, because your team is too stupid, choose one:
  • new employer
  • new stack
  • new location

maybe rails just isn't popular in philly. cut bait for what's biting, not for what you wish was under the water

i realize you hated new york but guess what, not everyone gets to have their dream career in their hometowns. gotta compromise on something. maybe that something is your stack/platform. maybe it's your location. maybe it's your industry.

yeah, i didn't mean it to sound as all over the place as it came across. the scala thing just kind of came out of nowhere since it seemed like a decent opportunity so i'll have to see what happens. the rails market in philly is actually pretty strong i'd say, but the problem with the companies here is that they're hilariously delusional about what they think they're going to get talent-wise (i.e. they expect sf/ny/austin/seattle talent), so companies have been in perpetual hire mode forever but don't really hire anyone. a guy who's been in the field a long while who works with my company on occasion as a contractor agreed. most of the more known people here either work for comcast or one of maybe 3-4 "big" companies in the area.

i like where i work and the people i work with, but most of the time i'm on my own and there's a lack of communication about a lot of things. a couple of the devs work from home just about all the time, so i've mostly given up on learning anything from any of them aside from a bit of the business aspect of things. i don't loathe rails or anything but we work on a shitload of rails 2 stuff and it blows so changing stacks is totally cool if i find something else. i just kind of take it in stride right now even if i come across like i hate it. experience is experience.
