Slow train coming

Ariza posted:

I tried to watch that show because I used to like Workaholics but I turned it off after ten minutes and then forgot that it existed. Are there any particular episodes that are worth watching?

The sketches are bad, but I assume the reason they exist is to pull some of the Workaholics audience in so they can see new comics. It's a good idea for attracting new people, but it's annoying for people who just want to watch the stand-up. I fast-forward through all of the sketch stuff and just watch the sets. I've seen some very good stand-up on there.

Mordecai Sanchez posted:

It was a decent idea to mix sketches about Adam's party with the stand up, but it ends up cutting too much into the comics' time to really see some good sets. You got 22 minutes divided by three, then add in the sketches and you got these truncated sets where everything feels off because of the editing.

Your average late night set is only 4 or 5 minutes. So, getting 3 per 22 minute episode is actually pretty good.

Also, Michael Che is gonna be the first person to do a stand-up set on Seth Meyers' Late Night show. Gonna be a good year for him. I think he's only been doing stand-up for 4 years-- he just does it constantly, and thus has grown much more rapidly.

Saw Amy Schumer and Kurt Metzger live tonight. Both of them rocked the stage. Top notch, A+. Got to see a few new clips from the upcoming season of Inside Amy Schumer, too.

Apoplexy -- in the mean time, you can check out Kurt's podcast with Sherrod Small called RaceWars. I know the name makes it sound stupid, but it's actually incredible. A good one to start off with is either called Blood Quanta or Black Baby Slippers. I can't remember the final title.

I don't think he's had more than a couple of lines in a single sketch this season. They got way too many featured players at once this season and he's probably not going to make it as a permanent cast member along with a bunch of others.

A friend of mine loves Kurt Metzger and I've stumbled across him a few times as a guest on various podcasts but, to me, the guy is terrible. Every time he's asked something he turns it into a bit or a lovely one-liner. He is the guy in a group of people that cannot stop trying to be funny. Maybe I've run into him at some odd times but he's ruined for me.

Yeah it's a shame because Whelan comes across well. One of the first episodes of the season is him on Weekend Update doing a bit from his standup about bad tattoos, so that's probably your best bet.

Well, that's a really tired attempt at a joke but it's just exaggeration, which is what humor more or less is, so I don't see a need to get all social justice warrior about it, either. That being said, I find him really annoying.

Just found out Stanhope is coming to Arkansas in April! Definitely going, but I'm trying to decide where to see him. I could see him 15min from home at a bar that I don't like much at all or I could drive ~4hrs and see him at a way cooler venue AND support a few of my friends (they're the ones putting the event together).

The New York one is easily my favourite YMIW live episode. It never stops being crazy entertaining and in particular there's an interesting dynamic between Metzger and Hari Kondabolu, who was a writer and performer on Totally Biased with W Kamau Bell. Their brands of humour are literally as far apart on the spectrum as you can get, and leads to Hari calling him out a couple of times for lazy jokes and generally being unimpressed with Metzger's schtick.

I get a liiiiiittle uncomfortable with Chelsea Peretti on this show, because I guess Hari Kondabolu made the mistake of opening with a joke about having a big dick while also being Indian? Which leads to her needling him more than a few times throughout the show by alluding to how small Indian dudes usually are in porn and generally in stereotypes. But that really is a minor quibble that only stands out because I've listened to it a few times already as my go-to introductory episode for people new to podcasts.

But yeah, don't even bother listening to the 1 on 1 YMIW with Metzger, unless you want to listen to a movie length conversation between two white heterosexual males making declarative statements about what kind of material should be considered offensive or off-limits for an audience. Nothing, comedy is art and rape jokes are just another colour on the palette

This weeks Ari Shiffir's Skeptic Tank spends like half the episode discussing the poo poo talking Metzger does behind the back of that weeks guest, Joe DeRosa. They're all friends, but it leads into Derosa going off on Metzger for being a video game nerd. It's just a great episode featuring a lot poo poo talking in general; Pete Holmes is involved as well as Ari's manager and lots of gossipy relationship stuff about NYC comics.

There's a lot more to Kurt Metzger than that silly mudslinging article from the radical feminists. I met him one month ago today, and I could not believe how sweet he was. "Consummate professional" is not what I expected to describe him as after I met him. Super cool dude. His new special comes out in May.

You'll note that the mudslinging article was written by the same hivemind that attacked Patton Oswalt for not criticizing other comics about rape jokes. That's right. Not for making rape jokes, but for being the voice of reason (re: Boston Marathon bombing) and then not telling comics how to do their job.

Kurt is a feminist. He just tackles a lot of issues other people won't touch. Check out his podcast Race Wars with Sherrod Small. It's hilarious, and a great public forum.

The night after that:
Pete Davidson, Seth Herzog, Adrienne Iapalucci, Judah Friedlander, Jay Oakerson, Ali Wong, and More!

If you're going to make a vacation out of it, just go to Bridgefest and have an awesome weekend. If you fly out here to LA for just a weekend you'll miss a show when your Lyft gets stuck in traffic one night or be distracted by the bazillion other things to do on the other night.

Or you could just book a hotel in downtown LA + plane way in advance for cheap and wait for next years Riot Fest.

Now that there's a local Comedy Scene in Portland, Bridgetown has been concentrating on getting more locals rather than big names for the last couple years, so if you're banking on super recognizable names, you might want to go with L.A. instead. I've gone to all of them except the first one and just spend the entire four days walking around in a comedy daze.

Big names or not, there's a solid 6-8 hours of stuff going down at four or five venues every day and it's absolutely impossible to be bored by it.

Edit: of course the best part about Bridgetown this year is there's no overbearing threat of Andy Dick crashing any show at any moment. Everyone was totally on edge about it that year.

Never mind. Found it. Yeah, this is the one I thought it was. I don't see a lot of local Portland comics on there. Unless local just means "Pacific Northwest", then there are a few more. Lots of NYC people on the lineup. Def. check out Adrienne Iapalluci if you get the chance. Her debut set on Letterman was so good that he invited her to the couch.

Her pregnancy/chapstick joke is one of my favorites.
