This thread is absolutely full of hilarious white nationalism. Ctrl+f for "Pavanot" to get to the particularly stupid comment chain.

This thread is awful, but at least the blatant racism isn't getting +500 upvotes. AskHistorians is actually a really good subreddit, and seems to strictly filter out these kinds of people. The general history subreddit, and it seems history videos on youtube, seem to attract nationalists like flies to a turd. I think the worst reddit thread I've ever seen though was one of those stupid confession memes a while ago. The guy said that some black kids came to his class with cake and refused to give any to the white kids (of course the teachers were cool with this). Oh and what drink did they bring to withhold from the white students? Grape Soda of course (seriously). I'll try to find it because unlike the above, the comments where basically a huge circle jerk about how racist black people are. Not one up voted comment questioned the validity of the story. There has to be some kind of formula to make reddit posts with just the right mix of racism, misogyny, and shitthatneverhappened to achieve maximum upvotes.

Edit: Found it, here it is.

Guys, let me know if I'M the crazy forward:

quote:

Let me first say that I am a white dude (Norwegian/Swedish specifically; the term 'white' is more invented by American Nativism than anything else), and that I had an ethnic awakening of sorts in my late teens. When I say ethnic awakening, I mean that I had a complicated relationship with my 'whiteness' and sought to discover why it was okay to be proud of being black but not okay to be proud of being white (more on this later).

When I started looking into this question, it led me down a road of American history that was rather dark (no pun intended). What I discovered was that every single ethnic group that has ever come to America (including those who fall under the relatively recent umbrella of 'white') has faced intense hostility and discrimination. Native Americans were savages without a notion of civilization (complety untrue), blacks are lazy moochers with little capacity for intelligence (again untrue) and that Hispanics are coming to take all of our jobs/wealth/etc, (I repeat myself, but again untrue). Specifically for European immigrants, the English were initially the only people who were pure and righteous etc. Germans were described in the same way that Latin American immigrants are today, as were the Poles, Irish, Scandinavian, etc. Don't even get me started with Asian immigrants (Chinese exclusion act, anyone?). The overall point is that America as a societal whole has a really crappy history with demonizing the perceived other, whether they be from Europe, down South, from Asia, Native, or newly-freed slave (not even gonna touch on our attitudes towards African slaves cuz...ugh).

The point being that, the various ethnic pride movements (and in an analogue, the gay pride movement) was a response to this constant demonization. People weren't marching in the streets trying to say that they were superior simply because of their race (with the exception of the Nation of Islam, but those dudes were cooky regardless of how they felt about race relations). They were marching to say "Hey, my race doesn't make me inferior. In fact, I am proud to be this thing that you hate and degrade!" So in that context, ethnic pride movements make sense. It's a reaction to the years and years of oppression and lies and slander that was perpetrated against them simply because of the color of their skin (or in the case of the Irish/other whites not deemed to be worthy of the moniker, country of origin).

Now, enter the White Pride movement. When I experienced my own ethnic awakening, I tried hard to understand what the Scandinavian experience in America was like. For a while I traced my genealogy. I talked to other Scandinavian Americans. I went to the Syttende Mai (Norwegian Constitution Day) events to discover what it really meant to be of Norwegian decent. For me, it was little more than idle curiosity. What I saw from other whites on this journey absolutely appalled me. I have never experienced such virulent hatred as I heard break forth from the lips of so called White Activists. Not when I was a Muslim in a majority Christian town, and certainly not after I came out as an Atheist. These people would throw out rediculous conspiracy theories about how Zionists controlled every aspect of American life, call white women who dated black men 'mudsharks' and 'race traitors', talk about how this land of immigrants was creating white genocide by allowing too many brown people in. All in all racist as hell.

On top of all that was that these people had NO IDEA what it meant to be Norwegian-American; no idea which cultural traits we brought from Norway (other than lutefisk [blech] and rip-off costumes from actual Norwegians), no idea what the pre-Christian culture was truely like, and an abounding love of Adolf Hitler and National Socialism (for whites only, of course, never mind that even Nazis discriminated between different classes of white people, a fact these fine Americans either chose to ignore or had never learned about).

So while I feel that there is nothing inherently 'wrong' with being proud of white heritage, the fact that the vast majority of these people don't understand their own culture and the fact that they use their collective color as an excuse to be racist jerks really troubles me.

So I had a doozy of a phone conversation with my dad the other day. First he tells me about the Fukishima reactor and how it's leaking radiation across the ocean and people have detected high levels of it on the west coast. I should buy nascent iodine and put a few drops under my tongue each day to counteract the radiation poisoning. Then we got on the topic of religion. Apparently aliens came to earth and mated with humans in the Old Testament days and that's the reason for the flood because God wanted to purge the world of these aliens.

Of course, the aliens were the ones who built the Pyramids. The aliens are still around though. All the richest people and most powerful politicians in the world have alien DNA and together they form the New World Order. Increased UFO sightings in recent years indicate the aliens are planning on doing a full-blown invasion soon. Also, the US dollar is based on nothing but paper and it has no value. Other countries are starting to figure this out, and within the next year the entire world economy is going to collapse. Well, this isn't exactly out of the ordinary for him. He's always been kooky. My family was part of a cult back when I was little. One of my first memories is my older brother trying to distract me while my parents and the church elders or whatever gave my sister an exorcism (it was very traumatizing because she was screaming her head off and it honestly looked like they were beating her, which they probably were). She was more interested in singing Mariah Carey and pop songs instead of church music, which obviously meant she was possessed by the devil. Later on my brother ran away at sixteen because the church accused him of being gay and completely demonised him. Other stuff went on too, but I'm too young to remember. My siblings have a lot of crazy stories though.

Fortunately my parents eventually left the cult. But my dad has always believed in crazy stuff. He's been talking about aliens in the Bible for a long time. He refused to vaccinate any of us when we were kids and he has always had a major distrust of the government and public education. I also remember reading Anne Frank's diary for school and one night he sat down with me and I can't remember everything he said but I swear he tried to convince me that the holocaust wasn't that bad, or maybe it didn't happen or something.

My sister also told me he said that races shouldn't mix. WELP. Sorry Dad I married a dark-skinned Latino and we made babies. I've never brought up the subject to him and I don't think I ever will. I just sincerely hope that he doesn't truly believe that. Oddly enough, despite all of this stuff, he's a very sweet, kind and gentle man, and I absolutely adore him as a father. It's a running joke in my family that you don't talk about anything remotely religious or political or he'll just start talking on and on and on about conspiracies and aliens.

I was a little shocked when I talked to him on the phone the other day though, because he hasn't been so gung-ho on that stuff recently and I figured since he remarried he's become a little bit saner. NOPE, instead he's doubled down on the crazy. :downs:

Duh, having kids isn't real work. You just have sex, pop 'em out, plant 'em in front of the TV set and then get to work makin' another one!

I also wanted to add about my father. He "married" a woman with eight kids. Yes, eight. Two or three are over 18 now but for the rest she gets over $1K per month in food stamps. I'm pretty sure she gets welfare and/or other benefits as well. I put married in quotes because they aren't legally married even though they had a nice wedding and everything. My dad told me flat out that it's because they don't want to lose her benefits. So that is pretty much the dictionary definition of "welfare queen".

Oh but she's white and Christian so it doesn't count, I forgot.

Today on the bus I heard a couple first-year university students having a really, really dumb conversation. The high point was when one of them brought up that his dad had a really good theory about the missing Malaysian plane: America got really pissed off that China wasn't backing them versus Russia, so they shot down the Malaysian plane because most of the people on it were Chinese. He then clarified that he wasn't sure he believed this theory of his dad's, but that it was probably true. The other guy quickly changed the subject to how 9/11 was obviously an inside job and the evidence was overwhelming, and the other guy was just starting to join in that one when we arrived and got off the bus.
