I just started watching Survivor China because of this thread. It's so good. So good. I'm excited to see where it all goes. I've only seen a few of the latest seasons but already I can tell this will be fun.

I hope James does well.

Speaking of past season I've now watched H v V, Tocantins and China and have watched the past four current seasons.

What should I catch up on now? I think I heard from this thread that Cook Islands is good?

I'd recommend Amazon or Pearl Islands next. It was when people just began to realize that they could flip on their alliance to better their spot in the game, so it leads to a lot of unpredictability. Plus there's a bunch of fun characters and funny moments in both. Cook islands is good; it has a bunch of great people in it, but I feel like those people have their best moments in other seasons.

I'd watch, as the poster above me said, Amazon and Pearl Islands then I'd jump to Guatemala (which has a couple of returnees from Palau, which is an interesting season in terms of how inept many players were, including one in the final 3). Australia is a great season with great characters but the game is WAY different back then. In my opinion Marquesas is a pretty drat good season as well and is really the first time that poo poo started getting flipped on its' head. As much as I hate Russell, everyone should watch Samoa too just because it was a pretty great season. I will highly recommend Guatemala though b/c that's still my favorite season with IMO the best character of all time J U DOUBLE D JUDD.

Everyone likes Amazon and Pearl Islands; watch them first. I'd throw Micronesia into that mix too and maaybe Philippines as well. After that is where it gets more murky; seasons like Australia, Marquesas, Palau, Guatemala, Cook Islands, and Samoa are pretty well regarded but have their fair share of critics.

On the other hand, seasons that most people believe are terrible: Thailand, Fiji, Nicaragua, Redemption Island, One World. Redemption Island is the weird one; some people like it but many others think it's actually the worst season of all.

Everyone's wrong, watch One World and Nicaragua, then use magic or science on yourself so you forget you've ever seen them. Be sure to leave very vague memories so you know deep in your head that the worst thing that will ever happen to you in your life has already passed, you just don't know what it was.

Fiji was an uneven, but ultimately rewarding season. Lots of hilarious moments and drama. Don't sell it short just because a large percentage of the cast was unlikable.

Fiji was not good pre-merge, but amazing post-merge.

Cook Islands players all being better in other seasons is a loving joke, with one notable exception. I still recommend it; it's sort of the turning point between old Survivor and new Survivor.

Amazon is a solid rec though, as is Marquesas. Honestly, short of Thailand, you're not going to find anything terrible pre-Nicaragua.

Point taken, but that's a minority opinion. Everyone from Jeff Probst to Survivor Sucks to Dalton Ross to reddit to Survivor Oz (now there's a cross-section of Survivor opinions if I've ever saw one) ranks Fiji as one of the worst seasons ever. So hey, I wouldn't recommend it to a relatively new viewer just because there's a pretty good chance he or she won't like it as much as some of the other seasons out there.

That's really weird to me, Fiji was a cool season and I don't really get why people wouldn't like it. Incidentally, a friend was just extolling the virtues of Nicaragua to me the other day, hands down one of the worst seasons in my opinion. He was saying it was one of his favorites because it was so unpredictable and hard to tell who would win. My response was who cares if it's unpredictable if it sucks, but I guess every season has its supporters.

Depends what you want to see. People will love/hate a season for an endless variety of personal reasons.

I'd go with Exile Island, Fans Versus Favorites, and Vanuatu as entertaining seasons with very memorable players.

Nicaragua is a fantastic season to watch if you love hating the absolute gently caress out of people. Jane, Chase, Sash, Na'Onka, Holly, Benry, Purple Kelly, Shannon, Jimmy T....holy poo poo I just named 9/20 of the entire cast which are horrible horrible horrible to watch. Just reflecting back on Nicaragua makes me loathe that period in Survivor. The only bright points were Marty being the only person with a clue and (endgame spoiler) Fabio derping his way to the win.

Survivor is the one TV show I still anxiously await 20+ seasons later and Nicaragua is the only season I just flat out gave up and stopped watching. The pain of watching the episodes wasn't even worth the schadenfreude of watching them lose.

If you like nutty characters then you can't go wrong with Gabon. Top 5 season for me. Vanuatu is also up there but that's mostly cause I think Chris is the most rad bro ever.

edit: Also Ken from Gabon just got picked up by Team Liquid for their Smash brothers team if anyone cares.
And its a crime that Randy, Sugar, and Corinne have been called back before Ken, Matty, and Crystal.

Sugar was the heart and soul of Gabon so I don't blame them for bringing her back first, but yeah the other two weren't really standouts. I'd be willing to see basically anyone who wasn't one of the Onions or Ace return from that season, because they were all really strong personalities on their own (and also insane, and mostly terrible at the game, which made for a great chaotic season).

Also, I will be this thread's Nicaragua defender if I have to be. Chaotic season, neat winner, Jane rules, and NaOnka is great if you don't take ~the game~ seriously and view her arc as continuously putting together the least explicable Survivor season ever (concluding with her jury vote). I didn't like about half the cast, but it played out in a unique way and I definitely enjoyed it more than the next three seasons. There are more "memorable characters" throughout than there were in the next several newbie casts, Philippines excepted.

Yeah, Sugar was crazily awesome on Gabon and they basically had to bring her back. She got sent to exile island 5 straight times in a row and was just like, "gently caress it, I'm just going to relax out here and enjoy it." Then everyone got all butthurt when Sugar turned out and voted them out, despite the fact that none of them really liked her, and ended up giving Susie the most undeserved second place finish ever.
