I think Dark Ritual's gone forever. Besides that sort of mana acceleration being maybe too good, that ability seems to be firmly in red at this point (off the top of my head, I know there's a Kamigawa card that gives RRR for 1R).

dokomoy posted:When they made that cycle did they view them as all equal in power level? No, that's why they tried to balance them with rarity. The expectation was that each player would spend about $30-50 on packs and just play with what they got, so if people got the occasional piece of power it wouldn't warp the game because it just wouldn't come up that often.

dokomoy posted:When they made that cycle did they view them as all equal in power level? Ancestral Recall was a rare, so they did recognize that it was the best. Back then you didn't have SCG or the Internet, so balancing stuff like Black Lotus around the fact that nobody would have more than one in their collection was a legitimate strategy. Also whoops for some reason I thought Recall had been reprinted in a Standard-legal format more recently than 2000. I guess I was thinking of Bolt being in 2013 and got confused. vOv fucked around with this message at 02:50 on Mar 27, 2014 |

vOv posted:My favorite fact about Lightning Bolt is that it's part of a cycle: pay 1 mana, get 3 of something. The white one, Healing Salve, is pretty bad. The blue one, Ancestral Recall, is bugfuck amazing and is widely considered one of the best cards ever printed. The black one, Dark Ritual, is really good, but as good as Recall, so they reprint it occasionally. Bolt's the red one; they bring it out when they need to bring down the power level of creatures. The green one, Giant Growth, is considered well-balanced and is in every core set except 2012 and 2013. Ritual hasn't been reprinted since 2000, at least as far as Constructed legality is concerned. Probably not coming back, especially since the Modern ban list has a couple of rituals on it. I've read before that Richard new that some of the cards like moxen etc. were powerful, but they never envisioned people getting 4x of the power cards to make constructed decks. They figured most players would spend $30-50 on cards, and so in an average playgroup one or maybe two people would have one really good card. Basically they envisioned magic being played like sealed. In a sealed pool, 1 mox is not crazy.

I don't think they had any concept of how powerful drawing cards was. There was a story of a group trying to decide what was better: weenies, medium creatures or fatties. Turns out it was just whatever deck drew more ancestral recalls ( a four of).

It was great because it was basically UDE going all out on a new game funded by YuGiOh profits. I was pissed when they just let it die. But shortly after, they lost the rights to print YGO, so it probably wasn't going to last long, anyway. The prize structures for the tournaments were absolutely insane. I still have my two cases of cards including extended art promos for basically everything Mutant set and prior. I even use my Hellboy life wheels to keep track of life during FNM. It's always cool when a random guy shows up and goes " Oh poo poo! VS!" Then we and lament playing Theros draft together.

Richard Garfield has literally said that his original plan for Magic was that if Magic ever got popular enough that people would own more than 1 piece of power in their entire collection that Wizards would be raking in so much money that they'd have the resources to take care of it. That's why certain Alpha cards are so overpowered.

Has anyone seen the BW Midgrange list that BBD ran at Cincinnati last weekend somewhere? Or will I need to get SCG premium? I saw a video of him playing a BW deck against Vanmeter a week or so back but I'd like to know if he's made changes, since that list influenced me into taking Brimaz in my own deck.

PSA: Within 15 miles of the center of town, Baltimore has 20 (Twenty) stores at FNM level or higher, most of which stock singles. This doesn't even count the stores around DC that are 45 minutes or less away. Welcome to the Wizard Poker Mecca.

It's weird, whenever I picture Baltimore, I picture pretty much The Wire, so it's kind of strange to imagine that right next to that there's a bunch of people playing wizard poker with $3000 decks.
