I paid it the gently caress off.

It also seriously needs to be legal to shoot cardinals here, because one of them thinks his reflection is trying to invade his turf and thus spends all day flitting around it, scratching the paint with his stupid little bird talons and making GBS threads all over it.

I weighed my car

Edmunds said my 1991 Civic Si weighed 2284 lbs

But the scale said 2120 with half a tank (and HX wheels)

Still, fully prepped STC civics are under 2000 lbs.

Fixed it! Chased the threads of two of the engine mount holes I hosed up, and threw a helicoil into the 3rd when the threads wouldn't clean up. Turns out with enough perseverance you can cram a 10.5mm drill bit into a 10mm drill chuck and drill through about an inch of cheese-grade Alu with your bargain basement B&Q drill. Formula Student pays off again. :D

P.S. ratcheting tap wrenches loving own and I wish I'd bought one years ago for poo poo like this:

That chimpanzee-operator usually skips the ratcheting tap driver and goes straight to putting a tap socket on the end of his impact anyway.

I spent money on this line of text just to make the "Stupid Newbie" go away.
I had to drill and tap quite a few holes in the process of lifting my jeep and found it quite easy to just put a 12-point socket on the tap and ratchet away. Is that a bad thing to do?

Eh, the length of the tommy bar on that wrench is so short you get far less leverage than you would with a t-handle. I didn't go the socket route precisely because I was terrified about loving up my nice new threads. :ohdear:

My trunk "shock" died, finally, so now not only does the new one work, it even lifts up the trunk :wtc: - quite a new experience.

On the flipside, I can't leave the trunk slightly open to get the battery tender cable to an outlet, I have to slam it down on the cable (carefully).

Switched to my summer wheels and tires. Might be a bit early yet but it's supposed to be above 50* (and possibly 70* on Monday) for the next couple weeks and right now my 'summer' tires are all seasons so it should be fine. Also installed one of these shift knobs after someone on here mentioned them. It feels kinda huge but it blends in better than the $7 aluminum :rice: knob that had on there before. Haven't driven it enough to know if I like it or not yet.

Seriously though, when I have the right tools on hand (MOST of the time) and I'm working on something I care about, I actually do things properly. Like, I back the tap out to break the chips, use cutting oil, torque wrenches on important bolts, etc etc.

If I'm at the junkyard or working on something that doesn't matter/will be going in the scrap heap when the upgrade parts go in? Stand the gently caress back, it's 8lb hand sledges, giant cold chisels, prybars, bolt cutters, and torches right the way down.

Replaced clutch pedal, installed delrin pedal bushings and a new master cylinder. Started to get nauseous lying on my back for 3 hours, and managed to smack myself in the face with the clutch pedal when I pulled the return spring pin.

And since I had to crack the lines I put the SS clutch line I've had sitting around forever.

Slowly getting closer to driving.

Yes. I managed to get a socket and breaker bar on the nuts with the intake manifold still in. I still need to get the one that goes through the intake manifold out. I got it in with the nut there so it will come out. I'm just hoping I don't have to spend too much time getting it out.

Not one step backwards!
I had some time off that I was about to lose so I took a week to tackle some things on the Fox Body I'd been procrastinating on. Finally finished rebuilding the rear drums and bought a set of pads for the front calipers then wrangled a friend into helping me bleed them. He jammed on the brakes when I had the cap off the master cylinder and sprayed brake fluid all over the engine bay. Dick. It made a hell of a lot of smoke when I forgot about it and fired off the engine later and all that poo poo burned off the headers.

Got into the suspension after that. Picked up a set of rear control arms and an Eibach sway bar from Late Model Restoration for a steal, then went over to American Muscle and got a wheel + tire set and impulse bought a cheap coil-over kit while I was there. Was pretty iffy on the coil-overs but in the end I'm pleased with how they turned out. Since the Fox isn't ever gonna be more than a weekend cruiser I really couldn't justify dropping over a grand on a nicer set. The old shocks and struts were completely shot. The rears had no return on them at all- which is probably why it only had a half inch of tire clearance in the back. While putting my new control arms in I noticed that the lowers had been replaced years earlier with an aftermarket set with urethane bushings. Except for one arm, which had a single urethane bushing on one end and a too-long sleeve jammed into place with a piece of rubber on the other :psyduck:

The difference now is night and day. I can actually throw it into a corner and it won't snap oversteer and kill me! I can hit a bump in the road and not rub the back tires! After enduring the awful ride for the past six months I forgot what a proper suspension feels like. It's great. Anyway, enough words here's some before and afters.

Exactly this, if I'm stuck with my pokey little tool box and need the car right now, I'll probably bodge something. Happily I'm no longer a student and my car is honestly less essential than it was so I'm happier to spring for the right tools and take my time a little bit. Having said that I probably learnt more about wrenching on cars in the 4 days of Formula Student than wrenching on my own stuff just because so much of it went wrong.*

Last week my truck wouldn't start after sitting for a couple days; battery was totally flat and unchargeable, I found that I had left an air compressor hooked up (but not on) in the backseat and assumed that to be the parasitic cause and bought a new battery.

Today the truck was dead again after sitting a couple days, wouldn't charge, etc but nothing was plugged in. Replaced the battery under warranty, and got to work with the multimeter finding an 8-9amp drain with the engine off, keys out, doors closed. Pulling every fuse under the hood I finally saw the drain drop down after "MBEC" - mid body electrical center, which apparently runs power seats, windows, etc in the cabin. With 175,000 miles of me sliding my rear end down the side of the driver's seat every time I get out, the panel containing the buttons for the power seat long ago broke off its mount, but I'd just been letting it hang there since I never adjust it anyways. I removed the panel and tucked the switchgear inside the hole in the seat and whattaya know, the parasitic drain went away. It must've been pinched in between the door and the seat and trying to move the seat motors while I was out of the truck.

This marks the second weekend in a row I had to use my corvette as a parts runner for my pickup truck. The whole operation was a bit of a gamble since my crappy unfused multimeter is only rated to measure current <10amps for <15 seconds per 15 minutes of operation, but hey- nothing caught on fire!

Hello ITR. Don't worry, we'll play soon.

I have an almost exact setup - mine is vertical but Escort 9500i/dashcam and Golf vs Sportwagen. The best way is to run it across the windshield, then down the outside of the a pillar. The inside is too tight, plus airbag. I have one on either side and there is plenty of room to tuck in extra cable on either side of console. The only bit that might give you trouble is the top of the windshield. I've got some prying tools which I pushed the cord with and it's in good now.
