Tilly and the Wall use a tap dancer instead of a drummer. The Mars Volta use a lot of Latin percussion along with drums. Kylesa have two drummers if you count that. And of course, there's always Slipknot...

I'll take anything from sampled beats to tabla or whatever. Acrania use traditional Latin percussion and Latin jazz sections in their death metal. There's also the use of drum machines to consider - would stuff like Mortician count? And then there's Catasexual Urge Motivation, who used a heavily modified drum machine with a huge sample rack in their music.

Does anyone know of any music like this? And exactly is this type of music called? Edit: Never mind, I figured from the comments of the song that it is called "bard metal," and that let me find more of it. Edit 2: Apparently, it is actually folk metal, but sometimes called bard metal (usually only on blind guardians songs). MegaZeroX fucked around with this message at 22:10 on Mar 22, 2014 |

Not my cup of tea so I can't really make any solid recommendations.

MegaZeroX posted:Does anyone know of any music like this? And exactly is this type of music called? Well, Blind Guardian are a pretty unique beast. I wouldn't really call them a folk metal band at all, but they do have a few of those kind of acoustic "bard ballads". They're often classified as a power metal band, but personally I'm a bit leery about that as well. I don't really know any other bands that sound like them, let alone bands that play more stuff like that particular song. If you didn't yet, look for Blind Guardian songs called Past and Future Secret, The Bard's Song (In the Forest), The Maiden and the Minstrel Knight, and Lord of the Rings. EDIT: Also, if you don't specifically want that more acoustic stuff, get the album Nightfall in Middle-Earth. It's a masterpiece. Nordick fucked around with this message at 22:50 on Mar 22, 2014 |

I've recently become addicted to By The Sword by Slash, and I'm wondering if there's anything in the possibly way too specific "sorta 'badass' warrior rock without being Manowar, although that's metal, I don't know, sometimes I'm bad at genres" genre. I've tried Wolfmother, but it doesn't quite hit the spot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhCnXVVDv1k

Here is a link of an example of the type of the music I'm after - I recently discovered it on Soundcloud and had just been going through all the suggested play lists that come up when you hear a new song. https://soundcloud.com/cdu/dubbwebb-holler-if-ya-cave well I hope you've found this already considering it's just a quick google away, but http://ghettofunk.co.uk/ is the best blog for this stuff. the tunes can be pretty hit or miss really, some are just lazily taking old funk tracks and throwing an electro wobble bass underneath, some (like the track you posted) are a bit of a cacophonous mess, some are absolutely awesome. it's mostly 'glitch hop', as well as breakbeat, hip hop, electro, dancehall, dub and general bass music. originals, remixes of every possible flavour, mashups etc. a few (varied) notables, some of whom you might have stumbled on already: skeewiff https://soundcloud.com/skeewiff/skeewiff-brutha-noah-2013 slynk https://soundcloud.com/slynk/slynk-in-the-house-free wbbl https://soundcloud.com/ghettofunk/run-on-wbbl-remix griz is getting pretty big now - love his production, wish his sax was better https://soundcloud.com/griz/dtw-to-dia-the-travels-of-mr-b howla (personally not a big fan but he fits here) https://soundcloud.com/howla/full-house c2c have a few tracks which would fit under this https://soundcloud.com/c2cdjs/bernhoft-shout-c2c-remix-1 coops https://soundcloud.com/coops-sounds/years-gone-by-coops-remix I was planning to post more but to be honest there's so much of this stuff out there right now that I'd be barely making a dent. the 'soundcloud scour' sections of the blog I posted above are great if you just want to mine as much of it as possible. certainly not all to my taste and some of it I find positively garish, but there are always gems to uncover. I haven't posted anything quite as unapologetically brash as the track you threw up, but there are plenty of similar ones out there, especially the mashups. hope this isn't too wide ranging

Declan MacManus posted:Can anyone recommend me some songs like Cat's Eye/Yellow Fever (Running) by Van Der Graaf Generator? Very theatrical, melodramatic, driving songs. Violin optional. Another song that kind of fits the bill is Vivaldi by Curved Air (which just so happens to have a violin). Definitely a lot of prog out there that works for that, but I'm trying to think of individual songs instead of "4 minute segment in an 18 minute piece" and having trouble. I'll think of some eventually. Someone mentioned the prog thread, I think that's a good suggestion. But for now, a lot of stuff by Explosions in the Sky fits this bill. Examples: Greet Death Your Hand in Mine The Only Moment We Are Alone (a few of these are skipped to the buildup to the part that matches your description, but the openings are very great as well)

This will be a bit of a weirdly specific question. Looking for songs with a specific sexy, mysterious, intense vibe. The feeling of driving through a strange city at 2 AM. Probably the quintessential song would be the Massive Attack's "Safe From Harm" Genre doesn't really matter; something like Clubbed to Death from the Matrix Reloaded soundtrack would be a decent fit, as would Orbital - Lost though if it were a touch darker in tone it would be perfect. I guess tracks that are similar in feel to soma.fm's Secret Agent station but a bit more uptempo. Thanks! e: Another track that's almost perfect is the Sasha remix of Grand National's "Talk Amongst Yourselves" Also still looking for this, from a while back: regulargonzalez posted:Looking for some good techno or electro sets or mixes along the lines of Daft Punk's Alive 1997 and Alive 2007 regulargonzalez fucked around with this message at 08:48 on Mar 28, 2014 |

In addition, I'd recommend downloading the 'Icons' series from the Ghettofunk blog, they're a great primer for the genre and feature all of the scene's best producers remixing classic tracks so they're very accessible. Here's the link for Vol.3, the first two require you to sign up to the blog before downloading: Icons Vol.3. Is GF discussed anywhere else on these forums?
