I like to counter those arguments by telling them any 20 year old (or older) car is better for the environment than replacing it with a brand new car because of the manufacturing requirements. They usually give me a fish out of water look for a few seconds before trying the "nuh-uh because I spend less on gas" line.

Counting the manufacture and averaged over the life of the vehicle, a 69 GTO Judge does less environmental damage per mile than any car built in the last 20 years. So if you really care about the planet, drive big block muscle cars.

I had a buddy pull that poo poo on me when I got my Ram Daytona. Had it for a few years when I ran into him again, bout '08 when the economy took a poo poo. He asked me how it was doing on gas, I was like, it sucks, getting like 14mpg. "Should have kept your Honda, my new Civic gets like 40 " Then I asked him how many miles he puts on it. He said like 30,000 a year, he uses it to commute. That's when I told him I had 25k on my Ram total and that he spent more cash on gas in a year then I will in two. Wasn't so smug after that. There's been like three other times I had the same conversation with different people. It's almost as if driving responsibly saves gas! e- the hilarious thing is he commutes to NYC to work a job where he makes a bit more than I do and he pisses it away on parking and gas. I always thought the point of the smart car is to be a tiny city car that is easier to park, ie being able to back into the curb where normally cars have to parallel park. They got decent mileage, but weren't designed to be commuters unless you lived in the city. car2go(kinda like zipcar but with a bunch of smart cars) has been in seattle for a while now, and I was pretty surprised how much room there is in them. Being ~6'1", i expected it to be much more cramped than I was.

However, assuming he feels he has to do it for his job/home locations and schedule, his Honda may be more suitable for his dumb commute than your truck would be. The argument that the GTO Judge is more enviro-friendly than a new Honda assumes the Honda never gets built, instead of getting built and just getting discounted until some other shmuck buys it, instead of I dunno keeping his scooter or something. The calculus of rates of return are highly personal, and one person's choice not to consume some resource doesn't mean it doesn't get consumed.

This CRX has a look on its face like "Why Me?" Crazy to see stuff like this still on the road 15 years after the tooners started chopping them up. Even more miraculously, it made the trip to Chicagoland from Tennessee without much of the bodywork flapping off. Another classic honda from the 90's, this one might still be saved.. I just phoned the non emergency police and my rental agency haha. I was also away for 5 days the week after and at some point it started going off and was still doing so when I got back. Never heard anything from the police or anyone. It ended up being a problem with one of my fire alarms (they're all connected to the burglar alarm system for some reason.) I was terrified of his driving on every level, including his choice of car (beat to poo poo Crown Vic that had bald tires). He's better now that the Army told him to take a defensive driving class.
