Horde of Heroes (Canadian / Soft-Launch) is a pretty fun '1000000-alike'. It's got IAP stuff and an energy mechanic but I'm early enough I can't comment too hard on it. So far, I only know it's fun.

Sweet maybe you'll play my upcoming game. It's no boom beach though .

I have tried a few f2p games on both PC and ios but never found one that was engaging enough to play more then twice. Even payed games w/ iap never really get me to buy. Like, I bought Warhammer Quest, enjoy it and play it in spurts maybe once every other week, but I never feel the urge buy any more characters or expansions. I keep hoping that ios games will be awesome and stuff but honestly of the dozens and dozens I have tried I don't think that any have really hooked me unless they are ports of PC games or games that were natively released on both, like most adventure games or wargames.

I had to write 1500 words on the mental status interview for school and I ended up writing like, 3000 words on a bi-polar girl I know who likes to gently caress a lot. My fear is that when I get FTL, the due date will swing around in this fluxy/pendulous way like a metronome made from meat because that's how due dates feel like to me, and because like, I don't get mopey or down or otherwise indigent when due dates do sneak up on me and instead get super, like, angry and aggressive, shouting "gently caress you" and kicking poo poo and eating things that are bad for me, that I'm concerned like I've done before, I'll just be like "good enough" and sending my intolerably tangental assignment off unedited not because FTL is ruining my life but I'm ruining my life with FTL and I don't have the loving wherewithal to control myself as a 28yo single guy etc. But yeah anyway, looking forward to FTL and Monument Valley. Woo. Don't hold back, yeaaah first day buy first day buy

Gatla posted:Is it the tomorrow or the 3rd? The magic of iTunes surrounds a lot around the different regions iTunes operate in. FTL will hit New Zealand first at around 6:00 AM central time and filter out across Asia and Europe as the clock slowly shifts to the third in those areas. For the US, newly released games and apps actually show up at 10:00 PM central on the day before the advertised release date. So, in the case of FTL, they say it's coming out on the 3rd, that means 10:00 PM central on the 2nd.

The premise is that you're the captain of a ship with some inside knowledge on the enemy fleet and they're chasing you across space. You have to stay ahead of them, while trying to upgrade your ship and crew along the way to survive the increasing challenges you meet, and to eventually do battle with the enemy fleet itself. The mechanic is a simple RTS: you have a view of your ship, and you can manage weapons, engines, shields, upgrades, and crew. You have a star map that lets you select which system to go to next, hopefully staying ahead of the fleet as you hop from planet to planet, system to system, completing missions, fighting enemies, and shopping around for crew and upgrades. The game, while simple, offers a variety of approaches to success. It rapidly becomes brutally hard and and your success often relies heavily on a bit of luck. That will make some people rage quit, and reasonably so. Others can't help but continue playing because dammit, that last run was so close! Success is tantalizingly close even when just starting out, and remains so as your skill in the game increases. And then you finally beat it once and you're like "UGH gently caress that, I will never play this again," and then ten minutes later, you're at it again, but this time you're going to try the stealth approach, or with a different ship/race that you unlocked last time, etc. All of that coupled with a short amount of time required to play through an entire game makes for something that is surprisingly hard to put down, if you can get over losing frequently. I played it on my computer a while back and although I enjoyed it I'm wondering if it's worth coming back for more. There were never a lot of events and progressing to the final battle wasn't too difficult so I'm worried the replayability. Can anyone here weigh in on that?

FTL for iPad is launching with a ton of new stuff, including a hard mode. It'll all be patched into the PC version for free, so would you like to pay $10 to play on your iPad?

Also the luck in the original version of FTL is ridiculously wild. Your first encounter could be 'Hooray, you found a YOU WIN superweapon!' to 'giant space spiders eat you and everyone you love'. Seriously gently caress those space spiders.

I'm really enjoying Boom Beach now. It feels a lot more tactical than Clash of Clans and its interesting trying to work out decent layouts of defenses, and then breaking other people's bases easily that looked impenetrable. Its a nice improvement on CoC.

Blow up the one defense that is going to hit you if you deploy to the far right or left then use flares to guide your dudes through the forest outside of the range of the guns until you are standing right behind the HQ. This works for about two weeks. Then people stop doing that. Then the game gets frustrating, since well placed defenses always beat equal or slightly better offenses.

Statues and a heavy focus on offense will help you destroy everything later on, though troop training costs get pretty high and you have you skip people giving out 10k gold unless you are okay with a gold loss.

Wait until you come up against the people who have been playing since before statues were nerfed. It gets pretty hard to compete when they have 15% x 3 defensive building damage + 15% x 3 building health or whatever. Make you work for it!

Does the Dr. Terror challenge come back after the timer expires? I got it recently for the first time and managed to clear the first two levels, but level 3 is just a giant gently caress-you to my troops and it's going to be quite a while before I can take on 4-5 level 10+ defenses with Heavies and Zukas.

I'm starting to think that in Boom Beach doing anything to upgrade your base is totally secondary to totally upgrading your landing craft and offensive capabilities. I've been doing things the opposite way trying to protect my base and it seems like I'm always behind the curve, and while I often defend alright when people attack my base I have a real hard time with anything near equal level when I'm out fighting. I wish there was a strategy guide for this game that was worth a poo poo.

In order to upgrade your HQ, you need to hit levels. In order to hit levels, you need to earn XP. As far as I can tell, building poo poo is the only way to earn XP. (Or the only significant way.) So, unless I'm missing something obvious, you kinda HAVE to keep expanding your home base to be offensive.
