As a Chinese man, I unironically found Mr Ching Chong Ding Dong absolutely hilarious and his daily omission from The Colbert Report an outright shame.

Y-Hat posted:By the way, that same quote applies to regulations of all sorts, not just financial ones. If The Jungle came out today, it would effectively be painted by right-wingers as "socialist propaganda" (which it was, but that's besides the point) and the FDA would never be established. But it was denounced as socialist propaganda when it was published. Funnily enough Upton Sinclair's gubernatorial run in California, namely the reaction of the studio heads, is why the rest of Hollywood has been aligned with the Democratic party and liberalism for decades. It's also where the first political attack tv ads came from.

That was an interesting interview with Michael Lewis about high frequency trading in which Jon at no time disclosed that his brother is a NYSE executive.

Ugh, the GM recall. My car is affected by it (Chevy Cobalt 2005) and I got the recall notice in the mail a few weeks ago. Taking the stuff off my keyring I can deal with, but I'm not missing weeks of work just because I have to drive over "rough roads" every day (hooray for my city being bankrupt and unable to fix the massive potholes/lovely roads). 2001? I had heard 2004 they first noticed it; this is even worse.

Maybe it's just my cynicism talking, but I gotta think that GM didn't do anything about this, in spite of knowing about the consequences for over a decade, because they know all they'll get is a fine- or, as large corporations call it, "the cost of doing business."

I'm fairly certain this goes against the Freedom of Information Act. I guess Tennessee's wagering that the activist Supreme Court will strike the law down when this case gets to them.

Ampersand Crush sounds like a good band. And I thought the problem was a lot of older tech workers didn't know the new stuff because they don't bother updating their skills; their CS degrees from 2002 are good forever! What do you mean no ones using Pascal?

This is super late, but watching the Beau Willimon (House of Cards creator) interview on Colbert, I love how Colbert just shut him down with a good-humored "Bullshit!" when he tried to sneak in that subtle insidious "THE MIDDLE IS THE TRUTH. COMPROMISE IS NECESSARY! OBAMA NEEDS TO LEARN ABOUT COMPROMISE! THE GUY ON MY SHOW GAVE THE REPUBLICANS EVERYTHING THEY WANTED!" South Park Republican bullshit at the end of his interview.

Soylentbits posted:As a Chinese man I thought it was a stupid bit. Ching Chong Ding Dong by itself is unfunny and insulting because it's usually used as an imitation of spoken Chinese even though it sounds nothing like any dialect of Chinese. I found Colbert's act as the character Ching Chong Ding Dong hilarious though, because I could see as an exaggeration of something one of my uncles would do. I felt the same way about one of the SNL skits about the Republican debates in 2008 with whoever was playing Jon Huntsmen, even though it got a lot of people outraged about racism on livejournal. I get how insensitive these things can get, but I haven't ever heard Chinese slurs used around me before, so these barbs admittedly wouldn't be grabbing any personal hurt.
