The panel thing for me isn't really about the panel itself. Usually, with SDCC being such a huge consumer of energy, it's nice to take one of the days and just do nothing but veg out in one of the panel halls for half the day. I try to make it one of the halls I genuinely want to see, but the whole "waiting in line" thing doesn't become an issue since the whole point is "not to walk around the exhibit hall for a bit." I definitely agree that some of the lesser known panels are genuinely great. The only big panel that I thought was really great was the WB/Legendary one from 2012 that was basically a rock concert. But, even then, the best parts weren't the big Hobbit panels or anything. Instead, I loved the surprise appearances from Will Farrell and Zach Galifinakis where they just riffed each other for half an hour. Or, before the WB panel, Sony had a small presentation for "End of Watch" of all things, which was absolutely gripping even though it was mostly just filler for people sitting in the hall waiting for WB or the Avengers later in the day. I think I'm gonna take my "panel day" to some of the side rooms this year for like Vertigo and stuff. I'm sure my GF will want to go to the Arrow panel or something, though, so we'll see how that goes. Hope she knows what she's getting into!

If you jump right out with the Indy and Han questions, he'll just shut the gently caress down but if you actually engage him beyond those characters, he's much better, not great but definitely better. When I saw Harrison Ford he was great as even though all the questions directed at him were really dumb he answered them amusingly or acted super droll about it rather than give awkward polite answers. When he actually got to speak at length about something that wasn't stupid he was intelligent. The worst are any action star actresses or those with a heavy fan following. They always get at least one super awkward inappropriate question from a sweaty nerd.

I can only imagine how flattered she was.

This really goes for anyone in cosplay regardless of gender. People don't like pictures being taken of them without knowledge or consent especially since most will say "yes" if you ask and will be glad you did. Last con I went to, this one really sweaty dude walked right up in front of me, slowly took out his camera and snapped a picture (trying to act all discrete even though I was looking right at him). I get pretty bothered whenever I see candid pictures of cosplayers texting or eating show up on Reddit or a blog post. If you're going to take a picture, at least have some courtesy and let the person give you a good photo. After one con, I was looking through a Kotaku recap post and saw a lovely cell phone photo of myself playing Dance Central in costume. It's super loving creepy seeing a photo of yourself on a major Gawker blog that you had no idea was being taken.

This is one of my favorite photos I've ever taken, does that make me a douchebag? I'm ok with that. I didn't realize it was a thing hating people taking pictures without saying anything. I always worry about slowing people down, because I know if I'm in the walkways I'm running from one place to another as fast as I can, and if I'm in the exhibit hall I'm trying not to block traffic.

So which hotels have the most rooms? Is it usually easier to get a room in those? I don't really care where I get room downtown, I just want one. Edit: Is calling the hotline a legitimate strategy?

Finished at just before 9:01. All of that time spent alphabetizing my report and dissertation references paid off when it came to choosing hotels. Probably would have been quicker if I used my keyboard to punch in the letter to go to the right spot. Here's hoping for Marriott Marquis. edit: And yeah, autofill is wondrous. Filled out all of my personal information in one click. Already knew the other options like upgrading and such, so clicked on them without having to read.

Had it done within a minute of open and I am still nervous as poo poo. I shouldn't have the shakes over a drat hotel reservation. Anyone know the approximate timeframe on hearing back? I know it says within 48 hours, but does it typically take that long? I'm probably just as interested in the recap email to see if I even filled the drat thing out right at this point.

Based off last year, we should get an email recapping what hotels we chose this afternoon. Two days later we should have results.

I clicked submit at 9:00 PST and 50 seconds. So I probably filled the form out in about 45 seconds. Autofill could have saved me about 10 seconds, but my work computers are still on IE8 (What are they on now? 11?). My friend who was using a touchpad instead of a mouse took like 2-3 minutes. I'm nervous as all hell too. I clicked book me at a higher rate even though I'm not sure what that means. I hope it doesn't mean 800 dollars. Edit: looking back at my chat logs it was more like 1 minute and 45 seconds. Time was just a blur. Jimmy James fucked around with this message at 04:19 on Apr 9, 2014 |

Awesome. Thanks guys! So, what's everyone hoping for? First two I had in were Marriott Gaslamp and then the Omni, but I know those are popular. We made sure to choose some of the downtown hotels about a mile out just in case, too. This really is like the Hunger Games the more you think about it. Jimmy James posted:I clicked book me at a higher rate even though I'm not sure what that means. I hope it doesn't mean 800 dollars. 1. SAN DIEGO MARRIOTT MARQUIS & MARINA 2. HILTON SAN DIEGO BAYFRONT 3. HARD ROCK HOTEL SAN DIEGO-STUDIO ROOM 4. OMNI SAN DIEGO HOTEL 5. MANCHESTER GRAND HYATT 6. HORTON GRAND HOTEL Brother switched the #1 and #2 spot, then picked 4 others in downtown. Stayed in Marriott once or twice, and Hilton a few. Only other hotel we've stayed in is on Coronado, which is great but lining of for the water taxi in the morning is a lame way to start the day.

My wife grew up there so she knows all the ins and outs of it but I will agree, the water taxi is a great tourist attraction but not exactly the best way to get to the convention center, especially if you accidentally take the one that drops you off up by the docked ship. We stayed at the omni last year and hope to stay there again, we really liked it but we also have hilton gaslamp, marriot gaslamp and hard rock in the mix. The one year I stayed in Coronado, I did the water taxi one day and just drove in and parked for the others.
