I never really had an issue with it being hamon or ripple, its a magical anime force instead of a random word like keikaku, what's the big deal?

It's a magical anime force that literally uses ripples to fight people. The reason not to translate it isn't really different from the reason not to translate whatever random word.

I don't care, except Hamon literally just means ripple in Japanese. In the context of JoJo it's a big deal so it's OK to not translate it, but it does JUST mean a ripple. I do prefer a translation that actually translates real words to their direct English counterparts.

I generally don't like it when translations decide to leave words un-translated just because they're "important" or something like aniki, shinigami, etc. The Japanese don't see the word as "hamon" they see the word as "ripple" so we should too.

It is dumb to leave it untranslated, but it's not my first concern about a translation of part I.

Speaking of which, do they have Dio referring to himself as "I, Dio"? Cause that's what I really care about.

No. It seems to be mostly the official subs with a few tweaks, but that was left untweaked. :(

Lets see if they spoil anything in the OP like in part 2.

Well, to be fair thats not really that bad. This is a beloved media franchise thats been around for over 25 years, nobody in the intended audience was being spoiled when Ceasers death was incredibly heavy handedly foreshadowed in the OP. That would be like complaining that a broadway reimagining of Starwars 'spoiled' Darth Vader being Lukes dad on the poster. The intended audience already knows. Its not like they were going for a dick move or anything

e: At the same time, people new to the franchise should either take spoilers in stride or just go on full lockdown. Everyone in the thread will do thier best not to say anything, but now that youre exposed to JoJo youll start looking in places where you wouldnt look before (like watching videos of the fighting games, for example) and my inadvertently spoil yourself on minor details. I wouldnt take it too seriously, since this is 100% a series thats about the journey and not about the destination.

I agree with you, I'm just saying it doesn't ruin my enjoyment of the series if it's left untranslated. Not keeping the flow of Jonathan's heart/heat/beat mini speech bothers me a lot more, but I grant that's a harder problem to work out.

I think there are some things that while technically being translatable, I prefer them to be left untouched. Onii for brother is one, it sounds absurdly weird to always call someone 'brother' like it's their name, and just translating it as their name sounds weirdly dissonant when the Japanese dialog doesn't have their name in it. The name suffixes like -san is another one that can lose a lot of meaning or completely changed the tone.
But that is all personal preference, and ripple/hamon is not one of these hard to translate words anyway.

Yeah this thread will try really hard to not spoil things. Most OPs are short and fast enough that there aren't too many things you'll catch if you aren't actively looking for it/already know, but I can think of a couple things they might do that would spoil things. We'll see if they did them in a week.

e: finished the post. Thanks improbable key combination I accidentally hit that posted this early!

e2: but seriously I have been so hyped for Old Joseph since this part was confirmed and he is not disappointing so far. Would have liked Sugita returning as an old man but this is pretty good too.

I can only hope the soundtrack is as great as it was during Battle Tendency. I'm sure it's just too early to tell, but when Part 2 opened with that sick-as-hell fight in the alley with Overdrive playing, this episode leaves me wanting.

I just watched the first episode and have never read the manga. I'm a little confused and I think I missed something: Didn't Erina and baby Lisa Lisa survive the boat explosion by hiding in Dio's coffin? Where did Dio find this other coffin to hide in with Johnathan's body? Wtf? If this is something we find out later then I will just wait. The animation quality is noticeably way better this season. I am so pumped for episode 2.

Both Jonathan and Joseph's birthmarks are shown in the anime prior to Stardust Crusaders, but Jonathan's is more obscured than Joseph's.

I would say I'm surprised that they didn't fix the coffin thing with Dio, but then again you really can't fix that sort of thing, I guess. I mean it'd be pretty dumb if Dio brought a second coffin with him for no reason other than to set up that he was coming back in Part 3, so enjoy some of these retcons. Although, it's not like this series is short of things that are big leaps in logic so whatevs.

It probably makes more sense to just assume that when Erina was rescued that they didn't take the coffin with them and dio just picked it up during his time under the sea.

They showed the coffin had a hidden layer, so maybe Erina and Lisa Lisa just drifted for a while and were picked up by a boat, and they left the coffin in the ocean.

I kinda love the idea of Dio putting his head on Jonathan's body, stealthily getting to the bottom of the coffin whilst engulfed in flames, setting up the fake bottom and agonizing as Erina gets on without noticing all that bullshit. :3:

Another possible theory is that Dio was just chilling out on the bottom of the ocean for a while and then just so happened to find his coffin, so he slipped on inside.
