It wasn't fan made. We're piling on the Ultramarines movie because it looks like it's going to get outperformed by a movie that actually is fan made.

The point is that you can enjoy a work of genre fiction while at the same time keeping some perspective and realizing it isn't Shakespeare, while yet again at the same time holding it to *some* relative standard. So: relative to a lot of 40k fiction, the Ultramarines movie was garbage.

The worst argument.

Goal posts priced to move! The variation in 'quality' in the Horus Heresy books is so varied this hardly makes for an objective metric. By this argument, it was also gold.

Whatever. I was able to watch it once and think 'Eh. Not terrible.'

Same can be said for your lovely, unrealistic standard set to a fan made episode of space marines. Sure, it wasn't a CGI masterpiece like some James Cameron movie, but it wasn't this piece of abject garbage all of you like to call it, and that's been my argument from the start. It was fun for what it was: watching space marines shoot chaos in the face.

It kind of was a piece of abject garbage, though. Don't get me wrong, I suppose I'm like you in that I didn't hate it, in fact I enjoyed it enough to watch it a couple of times over but I'm not going to stand in the face of overwhelming opinion and say that it's good for something it's not because there was barely enough Space Marines shooting Chaos in the face to satiate my apatite for it.

So we have bad taste in movies, good thing we're all in this is a thread about our bad taste in literature.

With that said, I'm finally getting around to reading Prospero Burns while simultaneously attempting to listen to the audio book of Fulgrim and drooling over my new hard cover of Visions of Heresy.

When I close my eyes all I can see is war.

It's not fan made for like the 3rd time. It is a big production bankrolled by Games Workshop done by a pretty major production company featuring big name actors to do voices, and it's objectively worse than the intro movie from a game made in 2004.

Because it's all we have. Why don't you go make one better so we can forget about Ultramarine.

It's just so goony to hate stuff for the sake of hating it.

I just read a passage in Betrayer where Lorgar kinetics a boulder the size of a rhino into a Warhounds cockpit and kills it. In a series marketed to pre-adolescent boys, Ultramarine was loving Shakespeare.

Oh and Angron stops a Titan from stomping him to death by holding its foot up like Mr. Incredible. Haha. Yea man, ultramarine was such schlock.

This is quite silly. The scenes of primarch badassery in the books have a reason to exist beyond fanboy wank; they show that the 40k universe is predicated on an era where demigods were real and their powers and ambitions (and fuckups) were titanic. Did you really read Betrayer and come off with the message that "Word Bearers/World Eaters are the best and are never wrong and always win and look good doing it?"

I didn't like the Ultramarines movie. My friend who ordered the special edition and is and had 5k points of painted Ultramarines detested it. It felt formulaic in the worst sense, and unforgivable for something in the scale of 40k, small and lacking in stakes.

Regarding the "treating bolter porn like it was Shakespeare", this is a non-issue. Cribbing from Rogert Ebert here, when and action film comes out, you don't compare it to Citizen Kane or Grapes of Wrath. You compare it to Robocop. Just because some genres have lower aims doesn't mean they cannot be well-executed and bring something to the table.

If you don't like Betrayer and think the super-human feats of the primarchs are stupid in the context of the heresy and 40k as a whole then maybe you just have terrible taste and should not get mad when people call you out on it.

- Next Eisenhorn vs Ravenor Book
- Interceptor City
- The Dark Angels Horus Heresy Book he was apparently working on. Apparently it is about the "Dreadwing"

Borrowed Ahriman: Exile from a friend and finished it in two sitdowns.

It's not bad, but far from great. I liked the way it dealt with sorcery, and the descriptions were nice and evocative. But the plot feels too much like a linear quest. Go here, do X risky thing. Go there, do Y riskier thing, only to learn you then have to go to location Z and face an even greater challenge, and they all slip by with almost no pathos or consequence. And the "the power was inside you all along" climax was a bit of a copout. I expected a bit more craftiness and cunning from the protagonist, not just tortured soul-searching and just going with the flow.

The supporting cast, which could have alleviated the issues, is a big blank. You never learn the backstory of the renegades, why they fell as far as they did, or what they would even be doing without Ahriman there to give them a motive. They are crutches so Ahriman doesn't just talk to himself...more than he does.

Now be a dear and
fuck the fuck off.
I'm behind on my HH books, and just got to Angel Exterminatus, and at half way in, I'm sadly just bored. It's competently written, but the characters themselves seem to barely get any airtime or development, and if they do, it's 'generic 40k dialogue 101', interspersed with the usual fare of basic 40k action sequences.

I feel like it's a little my own fault, and I'm being jaded, but this book isn't capturing my attention at all, and I don't think it's furthering the HH plot either.

Yeah, the part where Ahriman goes, "Oh, I guess I could just cast this rubric on you the whole time, too. I win!" at the end was a bit anticlimactic. But like you said, not amazing, but not bad either. I was satisfied, and hope it's a continuing story line. I always liked the character from A Thousand Sons, and I think French did a good job of building on that template.

That's what they're building up to right now, but the Black Library's raging hard on for John Grammaticus means that by the time they reach that scene, John will be a planet sized, immortal robot with eight arms wielding double-bladed katanas and fighting Perpetual demons in the Eye. So I wouldn't worry about him replacing Olly. Unless they manage to restrain themselves for that long.
