Think I took a wrong turn...

miscellaneous14 posted:

I kind of wish all MMOs did what GW2 does for PvP where you're temporarily max level whenever you queue into it, except also do that for PvE. I am so goddamn sick of doing the same "pick up 5 quests, kill 2 dozen monsters, turn in quests, walk to next quest hub and repeat" leveling process in every modern MMO, it's both not challenging and really tedious. And it keeps me away from doing group content which I actually genuinely like because it requires me to pay attention to enemy mechanics, character builds, ability rotations, etc.

Gating endgame content behind a leveling path that often shares almost no mechanical similarities beyond "kill things" is a stupid tradition that needs to die.

I think the problem is when questing is done poorly. Going from zone to disconnected zone, helping people with their random problems and not feeling connected to what you're doing is obviously boring.

SWTOR was the first MMO that engaged me with the questing, but even that had a bunch of chaff. Weirdly enough, some of the newer WoW zones have some of the best questing. Vashj'ir is great from Cataclysm and Pandaria has some amazing zones as well. Clever use of phasing and scripting really adds to the experience.

This is the kind of effort I would love to see more of in MMOs. Questing doesn't *have* to be boring and tedious. It's usually what I love the most, but I've grown up since vanilla WoW and so I expect more these days. I think most people do.

It really all comes down to good writing. The actual mechanics are secondary, but if you use them in clever ways to help sell the story, it makes it that much better.

Patch notes! New UI is coming for the next beta weekend in two week's time, but what really jumped out at me was this one: "Character Creation now offers various body types for all races and genders."

I am pretty excited to see how those look!

That and the hairstyles did it for me. New UI, neat, changed how breaking out of stuns works, yeah okay, but new hairstyles and body types?! YES PLEASE! :D

  • Stun Breakout Gameplay has been changed based on feedback. This change is intended to remove the button spamming, while also making keyboard macros less viable.
    • Players no longer have to rapidly press the interact button to get out of Stuns.
    • Now a random movement button (Forward, Backward, Left or Right) is selected.
    • Holding down the corresponding button will allow you to get out of the stun faster.
Another change of a mechanic that was much bemoaned in this thread once upon a time.

The list of unfixed "I'm not playing because of X :colbert:" shrinks some more for X that were actually viably fixable things and not just disagreeing with Devs on what is right/wrong.

Why didn't people like pounding F to break out of stuns? I thought it was neat and made combat more interesting. I guess the new one is also going to be interesting, but why was it so hard to hit F about two times to break out of your stun? Too hard for "casuals" or something?

It's not just good writing. There is actually quite a bit of decent writing in a lot of video games (not just MMOs) which hardly get the amount of attention that it deserves. Writing is half the battle. The other half is content delivery. The way that the story is delivered to the player counts a lot. Reading text is fine for some aspects of these games, but the days of block after block after block of text is over. It takes more than just replacing blocks of text with voice acting too. Everything that happens while a story is being delivered counts whether it be camera angles, scenery, the distance the camera is from certain key visuals, the music selection and sound effects and the timing that both of these occur as the narrative is played out, etc. Everything matters.

Waiting for the reveal that alternate body types for women are "Porn star with bigger boobs" and "Porn star with bigger butt". Maybe also "Pedobait", it really helped TERA and many other terrible korean games.

Alright I know that i'm being too down on the game, but MMOs and videogames in general rarely give a reason to be optimistic about this issue.

Well, add in a "Sell all junk" button on all vendors, and between the new UI, extra character customization and breakout changes, I'm more or less sold. I find myself anticipating it, but not in any way hyped for the game. Considering my past track record, though should mean good things for the staying power of this one. The stun breakout was one of the more visible annoyances I had in the beta.

Still slightly worried about whether they can get the raids (and secondarily warplots) in shape before launch, but I'll likely be a month or two behind the level curve anyway, so from my POV they will probably be alright by the time I get to them.

I'm real shocked that they're overhauling the UI and adding new creation options and poo poo. That shows a lot of care being put into listening to complaints. That makes me more willing to accept things like the monthly fee and all if the devs are willing to, at the very least, take complaints into consideration.

I honestly kinda enjoyed Champions Online's system of just mash any buttons on your keyboard to get out of stun as you could it was a viable strategy to quite literally roll your face across your keyboard.

Also DDR minigame to get out of stuns please.

The usual problem is game developers swing it in the other direction way too hard and make content way too on rails. There's nothing wrong with helping people with their random problems so long as they're a path into some sort of interesting story or their random problem is entertaining enough. Would you say Morrowind is going from zone to disconnected zone?

Enough that there are ~10-20 threads about 5 pages deep created every beta weekend since it went to weekends, and countless more before that during the closed beta that basically amount to "My text isn't rendering properly, or is disappearing," which have been shown to be exclusive to multi-GPU setups, and disabling SLI or forcing lower performance rendering fixes it.

That sounds like a large enough segment of people that maybe what to have their hardware used properly.

It's still a minority though, so you can't expect work to be done on that before work that makes the game run faster for everybody (including the SLI people with SLI disabled)

Hey know, only like 95% of korean MMOs have the near obligatory child like race. It just happens that the few that dont aren't played that much or haven't been released yet.

Speaking about in depth character customization and korea look at this thing . I guess when you restrict classes to single race/gender options you can go hog wild with everything else.

It is definitely a minority, and we weren't planning to support it, but it's 2014 and we decided we shouldn't ignore a feature like this. We just bought an SLI setup for one of our engineers so he can start investigating what it'll take to add in support. Not clear yet if it'll make it in before launch or not though.
