The Great Twist
What are the production secrets to Survivor? Is there an explanation for how all the little things work to bring it all together?

I heard on RHAP that Tribal Council is not within walking distance of the camps. What's to stop a contestant from going to the other camp... or too far out for whatever reason? If the Camera Men don't catch something important, do they ever stage it with the players? How come there isn't a lot more rule bending in challenges? It seems like there is plenty of room for it. What do the Jury members do all day while waiting for FTC? Do they interact and discuss what they plan on doing? How do some players always manage to look pretty after spending weeks on an island? Are they dolling them up? What about their clothes, are those changed out and cleaned because they manage to stay pristine as well.

There are many more little things I wonder when watching the game, but that's just what I have off the top of my head.

I always assumed that when people quit because they missed their families it was more "I can't concentrate on this game anymore" rather than "I have to get home ASAP," since I don't think they can just opt out of the sequester. Maybe if they're particularly distraught they can call home and check in? I do remember hearing that they sent Brandon Hantz home after Caramoan, but that was a bit different.

A lot of this sort of stuff is floating in the ether of the internet from player and cameramen Q&As but I don't know of any really good tell-all style interviews. I do wish someone would compile it all.

Last questions have been answered many times by contestants and Probst as a resounding no, they just cast a lot of pretty people. There are a lot of ugly people and unflattering shots too, so maybe your brain just likes remember the good times. I tend to believe it and who knows what kinds of lens and filters or whatever they are using on top of that. If you really look at them they usually look pretty sandy and tousled.

I could have sworn the staging question came up specifically with regards to finding an idol once and someone said that once the player had obviously found it they came in to take some cleaner shots of the 'find'... I could be making that up, maybe someone will know what I'm talking about.

Jury members just hang out at Ponderosa, I've heard some say it's boring as hell and some just enjoy relaxing after surviving. You can see what they do some of the time on the online videos, it's a lot like having a summer cabin in the woods. I don't watch all of those videos usually, but from what I've seen there's pretty much no jury talk. I'm not sure if that's a rule or something though.

If anything's beyond walking distance, they're escorted in a vehicle with very strict no-talking rules. This also happens for challenges, I think.

quote:

If the Camera Men don't catch something important, do they ever stage it with the players?

The camera men don't miss important poo poo. If there is a group of two contestants together, cameras are on them. I think there was one exception a few seasons back with somebody finding an idol off-camera. They re-staged that, and it was pretty obvious.

quote:

How come there isn't a lot more rule bending in challenges? It seems like there is plenty of room for it.

There is plenty of rule-bending. Contestants get a limitless period after explanation and before challenge to grill Jeff on the particulars of the rules. Luara explained this on RHAP last week with regards to Woo's Vibrams, but it's been happening for a long time. Check out the ceramic balancing challenge from China for an awesome example, and my single favorite Amanda moment ever. There was also a challenge where Survivors were supposed to balance on two pillars with other members repositioned through the water to get to a target. James "I bury people" Clements full out just carried people on the pillars across the field.

quote:

What do the Jury members do all day while waiting for FTC? Do they interact and discuss what they plan on doing?

They eat, drink, play vidya, form makeshift rock bands, go on field trips, freak out over basic hygiene, and bitch and moan. Check out some old Ponderosa vids.

No, no, and no. Check out those finales; some island-hot people look like trash with hair and makeup, while others look shockingly pleasing. As far as clothes go, the strange time lapse makes the dirt blend in. Also keep in mind that the worst part of dirty laundry is smell, not appearance.

Plus, I think the contestants actually kind of wash their clothes while playing the game. They are usually surrounded by water, so they just have to wade into the ocean with their 'dirty' clothes, give them a bit of a scrubbing, then hang them out to dry and now they have 'clean' clothes.

To expand on that a little, Probst commented on the subject a couple years back.

Jeff Probst posted:

The contestants do not have access to razors, nor do they shave during their time on the island. Any lack of growth you notice probably has to do with waxing or laser procedures, or the quality of the footage on your TV screen.

"Survivor" host Jeff Probst was actually thrilled to answer that very question when a reporter asked it during a conference call last week, as the host said even his mother asks him if the contestants get makeup before Tribal Council or other TV-friendly cosmetic procedures.

His answer was a definite no on all accounts. "There is absolutely nothing, nothing," he said. "They are given exactly what we say they have." He noted he wasn't sure why some contestants appear to look fresh and seem clean-shaven all the time. As to their hairiness, he said, "I think some of the people get a laser procedure that will go in a little deeper than a shave will go."

Probst added that the show's "women have more hair than you can see" because "they don't have tweezers, they don't shave. The guys don't get anything."

As always, the cast members do receive essential items such as tampons and condoms, and he said that birth control comes into play soon, as there are "love affairs this season, plural," including "some of the most intimate footage we've ever had."

Regarding their clothing, cast members’ clothes are essentially selected by producers to make sure their clothes work on TV (e.g., don't have logos or odd stripes) and meet their other needs. Last season, contestants received shoes before a challenge when they needed them, and got their own bathing suits in tree mail one day, perhaps because their underwear was getting too ratty and skimpy and making the censors work overtime.

Probst said producers "strip-search them before the show," and "control all of" what they bring with them in their bags. That's why contestants don't wear, as Probst said, "three pairs of underwear" or bring better clothes along. And producers make decisions about what else to offer contestants, like the swimsuits that appeared during "Survivor: China."

Opened up the Laura and Ciera interview about merges on RHAP. Right out of the gate they're praising themselves on how much better their season was and blah blah blah. I don't really care to hear them talk about themselves. Anyone who actually listened to it know if I'm missing anything worth hearing?

Plural love affairs? Thats the last thing I would have suspected the way this seasons going. I think this episode will be cut and dry Morgan will piss Kass off. Kass will want to vote Morgan off cause Kass is a egotistical brat the 5 alliance will pile on cause its an easy vote so if something other than that happens I'll be happy. Of course with so many people overplaying this season nothing's a sure bet.

Well I don't hate Ciera or Laura so I found it as easy to watch as any other RHAP, I already posted the big reveal though: Everyone on Samoa loved Mick and was planning to vote him to win the million bux, but at final tribal Natalie White explained her strategy and Mick couldn't articulate anything he ever did, so they all swung. Hmm, also Russell never talked to people except to insult them or demand they flip, other than that he just kept quietly to himself and was an antisocial loser. They both swoon big time over Tyson and describe him as the funniest and best social player around.

Keep in mind this does fly in the face of what John Fincher has said in his multiple RHAP appearances. Plus Fincher isn't an idiot and has confirmed many times that Luara is. So take it all with a grain of salt.

Fincher was one of what, two people to vote for Russell? Along with Shambo? Clearly he was more out of step with the jury voting than Luara. Wait, are you contradicting her characterization of Russell, or the Mick vote story?

The Mick vote story. If something like that really happened I'm sure Fincher would have brought it up in his four (five?) previous RHAP appearances. Or for that matter Monica Padilla would have when she did RHAP the week Ozzy voted himself to redemption island.

It's possible it's true, but given the source I'd be pretty skeptical.

Edit: Fincher did say he was banging his head against the wall at Pondarosa trying to explain "it's a game, stop being such bitter crybabies" while Luara lead the anti-Russell charge. Apparently Luara was very salty about how that season turned out.

I find Laura's story pretty unlikely, since the 7 Mick-voters would have had to coordinate somehow to all vote for Natalie instead, or else there would have still been some Mick stragglers.

Fast Luck
Feb 2, 1988

According to what she said, after Mick failed to give any reason to vote for him, when Natalie was giving her big speech about how it was her plan to get behind Russell and let him do the heavy lifting, the jury started looking at one another and kind of giving a nod and you could see right there the moment they all decided to vote for Natalie. I'm not saying it's definitely true but because I haven't heard the other versions yet for the time being I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt

Also, one of the related videos was this lucky find: 1 hour and 10 minutes of just Survivor Food Auctions, starting from Season 2 all the way to Cochran's season (not sure if it includes all seasons with auctions or not). Gosh, those first few minutes hit me in the gut and reminded me just how much I adored Elisabeth back then -- before she got on TV and showed everyone just how much of a horrible bitch she is. Amber was also cuter than I remembered her being, and drat do they look crazy-thin, especially Tina. Fincher talked about it a bunch in his last RHAP interview. Apparently he is good friends with Aras and Vytas so he heard it direct from Aras. When Rob asked Aras about it later he kind of awkwardly avoided answering.

The way Fincher tells it Luara went into a big speech about how in the game anything goes and it's not really cheating if it's on Survivor. (She's married) She then proceeded to throw herself at Aras in aggressive fashion thinking that was her ticket to the endgame. Aras wasn't interested and the whole thing got really awkward leading to Aras seemingly out of nowhere pushing to vote her out. We saw the massages part but apparently it was a whole lot more than that. The whole thing caused quite a stir at the time the season was airing.
