I'm on Teksavvy and had the cable issue like everyone else the other day. But when I logged onto my VPN, I was able to get regular speeds.
Just out of curiosity, how does that work out?

It was a routing issue and your VPN probably changed this.

Oh, it's not the gods, this is purely man made. Corporate made, to be exact. It's the inevitable effect of a duopoly. As long as the duopoly exists, this level of service will only go down.

Point taken, but in Alberta we have an oligopoly as well (actually more like a monopoly to Telus in many, many areas) and we have nothing like the bullshit service Ontario seems to be stuck with. Is it also a DSL/Cable thing maybe?

So it wasn't just me, then. Mine took a gigantic beer poo poo on me and it has yet to recover, and @rogershelps insists everything's fine. My VPN helps but it still can't render my connection usable the way it was, and thanks to Bell's stubborn insistence to run modern service to my 30 year old neighbourhood I can do precisely nothing about it.

Well, except go outside or do something other than play games. On the scale of Actual Problems it doesn't rate, but as internet access goes it's utter garbage.

Dang, define heavy. The wife and I netflix (HD if available) a ton, plus other streaming video sources, steam games, etc, and I'm usually 250-300gb a month overall. That being said, I hate caps lower than 500gb since a heavy month I might go up to/slightly over even that.

Goddamn Eastlink is so crappy for that :(

Just got this in my e-mail:

quote:

Hello there,

As a valued TekSavvy customer, we want to let you know of some important changes to the way we currently bill for usage. As of May 5th, 2014, you will begin to see charges for overages if your account exceeds your monthly allocation.

You can avoid these charges in a couple of ways:
We encourage you to monitor the usage on your account for the coming month to understand if the package you are currently using suits your needs. You can monitor your usage in the MyAccount customer portal at http://myaccount.teksavvy.com
You can upgrade to a higher bandwidth level at any time. For example a customer on a 300GB package may upgrade to the Unlimited package within their speed tier for the cost of the price difference between packages.
Overage rates are as follows:

Service Type Rate per GB Maximum**
DSL $0.25/GB $25
Cable $0.50/GB $50
**please note that the maximum doesn’t apply to speeds of 50Mbps and above, and are charged per GB.

We understand that these changes come with some concern. As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

Sincerely,

The TekSavvy Team

I tried looking for my Telus data usage, should it be on the e.bill under "Usage"? That just displays my name and address. Is it some flash related thing that doesn't show up because I'm on an ipad?

I'm probably going to be well under the 400GB for the 50Mbps plan, but that still seems low. I really don't like caps, makes me antsy. But now there's no option. Dammit.

Shaw also has usage caps that are exactly the same as Telus', but they're not strictly enforced unless you're in a saturated area. Who knows if that'll change in the future if UBB becomes an "industry standard", though.

Yeah I knew that Shaw has the caps too I was just wondering if they had any deals to entice new signups these days. My Telus contract was up in Feb so I'm a free agent for the right deal. Shaw doesn't really do promos though since they don't have contracts, I guess.

I should do a price compare and see if it's worth bothering, I'm sure with the amount of collusion in the marketplace between the two they have it worked out so it's not worth the bother to switch one way or the other.

We've got some six month promotions, but I'm not seeing anything on the site right now for our 50Mbps package. I can dig around when I'm in at work tomorrow and get back to you, though. We also have 2 year contracts and 3 year purchase plans, but that's more for getting free rental PVR equipment, or paying for said equipment in monthly installments.

Or that. Only reason I'd say DSL is if he's using Telus and happy with the service he'd be getting pretty much the exact same service with the exception of a slower upload... which doesn't impact me.

I will check out Teksavvy too (no issues with switching from DSL to cable, I had cable before Optik). I will kind of miss having cable TV though, even though I seem to watch it less and less.

I wish iTunes season passes were more reasonable for HD shows (ie $20 a season vs the $40 they usually are), I'd go that way instead.

Chromecast is available in Canada now for your TV needs: https://www.google.ca/intl/en/chrome/devices/chromecast/

Chromecast + US Netflix + downloading Canadian shows is totally better than paying TELUS $80/mo for essentials plus a few extra channels.

Yeah I have an appleTV already and use unblock-us so I am mostly there.. The 25Mb Cable for $45 or the 25Mb DSL for $55 unlimited look pretty good from Teksavvy.. Are they fairly reliable in the GVRD?

Anyone still having trouble with Rogers cable internet (or resellers) in the GTA? I started having problems a day or two after that, and it's been problematic on and off since then. I'm on Start, if it matters.

The one time it was completely nonfunctional, I called Start and they arranged to have a Rogers tech come over in a couple of days. It fixed itself before then with no communication from Rogers. Since then it's been working most of the time but with intermittent DNS issues and/or huge packetloss and bad latency. Christ this loving internet duopoly we have is such garbage.

As far as I understand, Start has different infrastructure from TekSavvy and so they should be better insulated from Rogers fuckups, and they claim to not have any issues of their own. If that's true other Rogers customers should still be having problems.

The Telus site says: For select customers in Prince George, BC and surrounding areas, additional usage charges will apply for usage over your Internet plan’s monthly data allowance beginning June 1, 2014.

So it's only for that area. Alberta should still be safe for now. Also, wtf, 250GB for 25mb. Did that just drop? I could have sworn it was like 400GB.

Yeah, the thing is, for the longest time Bell claimed it had fibre when all it had was FTTN.

FTTN is not the same as FTTB (Building)/FTTH (Home/Unit).

A lot of times new developments signs contracts to X/Y, they offer to install the fibre for "free" during construction, as a result, you're limited to the companies that foot the bill. And often have no copper in the building for legacy connections.
