Fuzzy Pipe Wrench posted:As a member of the Verizon Unlimited Illuminati I like to leave wifi on for location services but never connect to any spots because my 4G is faster by a mile. On my various Android phones this leads to incessant nagging to connect to a wifi network. Would an Icon nag me similarly? There's a checkbox in Settings for that -- turn it off and a WP phone will never bug you about Wi-Fi networks again.

The only box I have checked on this setting card is the keep Wifi on when the screen times out. I still auto connect to the ones I've manually connected to fine. The automatically join AT&T hotspot one annoyed me a lot because as said above it would connect but then I'd have to sign into a webpage (without being aware I had done so). The second checkbox takes care of that.

WattsvilleBlues posted:Here's my usage scenario - I work long days, and no where near WiFi. I like to conserve my battery as much as possible, especially since I have to use Here Drive, and that thing demolishes battery (even after it's been closed - I think it's a long-standing bug). So I turn mobile data off unless I need to explicitly use it. We've worked pretty hard to not be excessive on cell data. In fact, on several carries it's part of the acceptance criteria that we have to meet (ie, the phone just stilling idle with can't consume more then X amount of data.) Many people in places (esp China) are on your small/limited data plans, but from what I understand is that they pretty much just leave the data off non stop and rely almost exclusively on wifi (ie, the toggling often isn't a thing). I believe the texting/mms thing just doesn't happen as much and they use WhatsApp/QQ/Weibo (or whatever one of those apps are called) to replace the need for cell data all together. I'll forward the request to add the quick toggle option for cell data toggle. Can't promise anything but it doesn't hurt to ask though. I can record audio), but Cortana does not actually finish any request done with voice. It always fails with an error message, so I can't test the integration stuff I've done to see if it works. Is there any way I can test that with the emulator? Or do I have to wait for the dev preview? Or is it just broken for me.

Not sure what the update is, but my phone just received notification of it (Lumia 920, on AT&T, signed up for the developer preview), and now I'm getting nothing but the gears and a progress bar frozen at around 5% poo poo.

If you barely signed up it's a placeholder kind of thing to prep for the real update. Let it sit awhile. Your OS will likely end in .155 when it's done.

I managed to have a go on a phone with Windows Phone 8.1 on it (Microsoft has a stand at a tech expo over here) and, from very brief impressions, it's alright. I can't say they have fixed everything because I didn't get much of a chance to check everything out, but the backgrounds thing certainly looked slick and the notifications thing was cool. This was running on a NL1020 so it was super fast. Also, I didn't see Cortana on there (which I guess is to be expected if it isn't going to be available in the UK yet) but pressing the search button brought up Bing so at least that is staying. Pressing/holding the Windows key did nothing, though.

My only complaint right now is with AT&T and Verizon and their awful exclusive nonsense. My contract on AT&T is up for my 900, and I can get a now underpowered 1020, or a 1520 with good hardware that is stupid-big. Is this going to be one of those things where buying an international 930 means no LTE on AT&T?

In refarmed areas it should get HSPA++ i'm not sure if the accesspoint nokia app fixes the mms issue though.. if it does you can grab an icon on craigslist for usually around 380-400 still sealed in a box.

Does anyone who has a gmail account synced to their phone use 2-step authentication? In lieu of Heartbleed I finally changed my Gmail password and enabled two-step authentication, and now my phone won't accept my password (or the temporary 6-digit code they text me). Are they incompatible?

You have to go to Google account settings and create an app password; it'll be a string of 16(?) characters that you enter in the password field. You can do the same for your Microsoft account and for both it applies to things like third party email clients and the like. Oh, and you can use the Microsoft authenticator app with your Google account, just take a picture of the bar code when it comes up. Bollocks, I meant the 14th! If it's not here by Tuesday, it will not be delivered in the first half of April as foretold in the BUILD scriptures. So there will be a great earthquake and the sun will become as black as sack cloth, and the moon will become as blood, and the seas will boil and the skies fall. Yeah, I'll go get a life now. But I will be disappointed. My HTC 8X has started playing up this past week, saying it's got no SIM card when it clearly has. I'm hoping it's just a stupid temporary software glitch that's appeared - a power cycle picks it up again. But it's recurrent.

Yeah, it's a known hardware issue. I did the tape fix last year after having the same problem and it's seated more snugly now.

My iPhone is giving me some trouble and since I switched to all Windows for now I figured I'd give WinPhone a try. Should I basically be waiting for new hardware at this point? I haven't really kept up with WinPhone or Nokia at ALL so I don't know if we're on the verge of new shiny things to buy.

Rather than drop some cash on a high end device, if you want to just try it out pick up a 520/521 for peanuts and dip your toe in the water. It gives you the full software/UI experience, you're only missing "some" performance benefits and hardware features (camera/NFC/hires/etc). If you decide you like it then it will tide you over till the device you want becomes available. Personally I think the 920/925/928/1020 are still great devices for what should be a decent lower price now. Don't burn any upgrades, get them second hand if you want something better than a 520/521. There is good new hardware, but some of them dropped some cool things or aren't available on all carriers. I'm personally waiting for what comes after the 930 which was JUST announced. My 1020 is doing just fine.
