LF didn't just wear out their welcome with the mods, but also with like everyone else who wasn't an LF poster. By the end they were on some tedious crusade to convert every subforum into their own strain of leftism by making boring tumblr-like shitposts before going back to their lair to high five each other about how they totally owned that thread about video games or whatever. When the hammer finally fell I was glad to see it die.

LF was a thing of beauty. By the time it got shuffled over to forums cancer it was being overrun with poo poo replacing funny and informative. But for a while there it was amazing

Pre-election LF and Debate Disco have a lot in common. LF almost always had at least one educational, rational discussion thread going at any time. And if you watched often enough, micro-threads would fly by with some world-view informing news. As I recall it began mostly as a discussion of economics and markets, business, that sort of thing. But, that may just be the threads I was interested in at the time.

That whole "the market can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent" was quite true. The details about CDO's and CDS's and other stuff weren't immediately available but started to come out well before the bubble exploded. Combined with the reality of Iraq, the massive deficit created (and the details of things like the Medicare Drug law), it was like watching a car speeding along a road that looks like it goes straight off a cliff. And then it did.

LF was a lot of white-noise and poo poo posts, but it also had some great effort-post threads, funny trolling and it gave us the INFRATEAL VS HEEBIE-GBS showdown: posts written with sound and fury, but signifying nothing.

Infrateal posted:

It seems like it was always a pain for the mods to keep it under control, and I don't know if the admins were trying to punish the LF posters by making FYAD regulars IK of LF or what, but that just made things worse. I think the last straw with LF was one of the Grover threads where someone tracked down his IRL address on google earth/maps and posted it.

Oh yeah, definitely. The feds are playing the long game here for sure. Once this story slides off the drudge front page and all the militiamen finish celebrating, the rancher is hosed.

Bob Marshall Reiterates Claim That Disabled Children Represent God's 'Vengeance' For Abortion
SUBMITTED BY Brian Tashman on Friday, 4/11/2014 10:20 am
Virginia GOP state delegate and congressional candidate Bob Marshall is standing by his claim that disabled children are God’s punishment for women who have an abortion.

“Nature takes its vengeance on subsequent children,” Marshall said in 2010. “It’s a special punishment, Christians would suggest.”

Yesterday, Marshall insisted that he won’t be backing away from the comment as he campaigns for the House, and is similarly defending his suggestions that Justice Anthony Kennedy is secretly gay and that abortion should be banned in cases of incest because it could be “voluntary.”

Delegate Robert G. Marshall has said that disabled children can be God’s vengeance against women who have had abortions. He has described incest as sometimes voluntary, and he has questioned the sexuality of a Supreme Court justice who has favored marriage equality.

“For all I know, Kennedy’s a homosexual,” he said. “You can’t be doing some of these things without this kind of conclusion.”

Like many of his other comments, Mr. Marshall stands by it.

“Clearly, some of the people who are making these decisions must be rationalizing their own bad behavior,” he said Thursday.

In 2010, at an event calling for an end to state funding for Planned Parenthood, Mr. Marshall suggested that women who have abortions are more likely to face “vengeance” from “nature” in children with a greater likelihood of having developmental disabilities.

“The number of children who are born subsequent to a first abortion who have handicaps has increased dramatically. Why? Because when you abort the firstborn of any, nature takes its vengeance on the subsequent children,” Mr. Marshall said.

The author of a 1989 Boston Globe column asked him about his opposition to all abortion — even in cases of rape, incest, and to save the life of the mother. Mr. Marshall, then the research director for the American Life League, posed a baffling question of his own in response.

“What if incest is voluntary?” Mr. Marshall said. “Sometimes it is.”

Mr. Marshall has repeatedly introduced “personhood” bills to secure civil and legal rights for the unborn from the moment of conception. In 2012, he also introduced a measure that would require women to undergo ultrasounds before having abortions. The legislative effort created headaches for Gov. Bob McDonnell, who ultimately requested an amendment to water down the bill after the news went national and the state became the butt of jokes for late-night comedians.

GOP Lawmaker Compares Abortion To Buying A Car
Posted: 04/09/2014 2:26 pm EDT Updated: 04/10/2014 12:59 pm EDT

A Republican state lawmaker in Missouri defended his controversial bill forcing women to have ultrasounds before abortions by comparing abortion to purchasing a new vehicle.

“In making a decision to buy a car, I put research in there to find out what to do," state Rep. Chuck Gatschenberger (R) told colleagues at a hearing on the bill Tuesday.

House Bill 1613 would require an ultrasound and also triple Missouri’s mandatory waiting period for a woman seeking abortion to 72 hours. Gatschenberger suggested that his legislation would make a woman "research" her decision before having an abortion -- a move he said would "increase the odds that she will choose life for her unborn baby."
