The final straw was making fun of former mod Grover's stupid house using his own posts. Grover had a huge meltdown and that was used as pretext to permaban a bunch of posters and close the subforum. The let's kill the president thing was in FYAD.

There were threads covering water shortages and how policy influenced it, the under reported 2008 famine in SEA, modern farming and next generation farming techniques and how they intersected with existing interests and policy, and the "most evil company" thread was incredibly eye opening.

The best thread though was the leftist readings of movies, where they explained how Die Hard was actually a communist movie.

LF was a thing of beauty. By the time it got shuffled over to forums cancer it was being overrun with poo poo replacing funny and informative. But for a while there it was amazing

Not just the total failure to respond, the years leading up to it went from "Bush lowered taxes, economy good, deficits don't matter" to "house prices are going up but hmm that can't last forever" to "OK we're obviously in a bubble why the hell is nothing being done about it", and that lasted several years (2005-2007). That whole "the market can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent" was quite true. The details about CDO's and CDS's and other stuff weren't immediately available but started to come out well before the bubble exploded. Combined with the reality of Iraq, the massive deficit created (and the details of things like the Medicare Drug law), it was like watching a car speeding along a road that looks like it goes straight off a cliff. And then it did.


About the only somewhat specific thing I can remember, besides Remedy's couch, Scrubber, and VoR, is that looking back, happyelf was right about most things. I don't remember too much about other resident leftists back then, though.

LF was awesome. My favorite post was about the Congo. Dude posted lots of pictures and history and it was an honestly good thread. LF effortposts in general were always more informative/accurate than anything else. It started the politoons thread. My favorite comedy thread was "If Africa had a currency, it would be the Afro"
