The let's kill the president thing was in FYAD. LF didn't just wear out their welcome with the mods, but also with like everyone else who wasn't an LF poster. By the end they were on some tedious crusade to convert every subforum into their own strain of leftism by making boring tumblr-like shitposts before going back to their lair to high five each other about how they totally owned that thread about video games or whatever. When the hammer finally fell I was glad to see it die.

There were threads covering water shortages and how policy influenced it, the under reported 2008 famine in SEA, modern farming and next generation farming techniques and how they intersected with existing interests and policy, and the "most evil company" thread was incredibly eye opening. Pre-election LF and Debate Disco have a lot in common. LF almost always had at least one educational, rational discussion thread going at any time. And if you watched often enough, micro-threads would fly by with some world-view informing news. As I recall it began mostly as a discussion of economics and markets, business, that sort of thing. But, that may just be the threads I was interested in at the time.

That whole "the market can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent" was quite true. The details about CDO's and CDS's and other stuff weren't immediately available but started to come out well before the bubble exploded. Combined with the reality of Iraq, the massive deficit created (and the details of things like the Medicare Drug law), it was like watching a car speeding along a road that looks like it goes straight off a cliff. And then it did. FaaQ's couch.

A lot of the LF leftists also fled to Twitter - I still follow HenryKrinkle and McCaine for fun. I wonder what happened to Karl Polanyi, though. Also, the best threads on LF were the Serbia threads. I learned tons about war criminals and turbo-folk there.

I'm sort of torn about that poo poo being resolved. On one hand, great, nobody loving died or got shot or whatever. On the other hand, these pieces of subhuman filth are deriving validation from the federal government deciding not to, you know, engage in a bloodbath.

It isn't over, they just aren't going to engage an armed gang of idiots. They will let things cool off and wait for people to go home and then the government will continue their work. Besides, the FBI is getting all sorts of great information on whom exactly is willing to pick up a firearm and ferment armed rebellion. I bet they are having an orgy in FBI headquarters right now.

The Feds are rather obviously just waiting for the Ron Paul / Alex Jones / Joe Walsh crowd to vacate and they'll continue to prosecute the rancher. It's good that they seem to have learned from the 90s that forcing a show of authority isn't always the best solution to these issues.

LF was a lot of white-noise and poo poo posts, but it also had some great effort-post threads, funny trolling and it gave us the INFRATEAL VS HEEBIE-GBS showdown: posts written with sound and fury, but signifying nothing.Infrateal posted:in world war I primitive tanks carried bundles of sticks on the front of their hulls which they dropped into trenches so they could cross them and the term for these objects is "fascines" but they could also be termed "enormous faggots" and basically if a wwI tank ever goes to mars and needs to cross the Valles Marineris it should strap heebie-gbs to the front of its hull It seems like it was always a pain for the mods to keep it under control, and I don't know if the admins were trying to punish the LF posters by making FYAD regulars IK of LF or what, but that just made things worse. I think the last straw with LF was one of the Grover threads where someone tracked down his IRL address on google earth/maps and posted it.

The feds are playing the long game here for sure. Once this story slides off the drudge front page and all the militiamen finish celebrating, the rancher is hosed. Walsh joining up just in time to publicly spike the football is pretty hilarious though.

And then the feds will introduce said rancher to the idea that that he is, in fact, not an island by legally isolating him from all of civil society, including his bank accounts.
