I still can't come to grips with the idea that 25 years ago or whatever the idea of stadiums having *seats* for everyone was a crazy idea. Just having people stand on terraces the whole time.

teams across the world still have standing sections some of which are completely safe (e.g. germany). it's a different type of a fan culture. a couple of teams in England signed a petition to bring them back.

Caging in your supporters and then subdividing them with spike pointed fences is a recipe for disaster.

STOP DOING HEROIN
I can understand the need for segregated fan sections (we see this when the U.S. soccer team plays in Mexico, the traveling fans have police escorts and everything), but Hillsborough's stadium design was flat-out dangerous and nowhere near prepared to handle a crowd that size.

Segregated fan sections are fine. They do it to this day in the EPL. But now its usually just a wall of security around the rival fan section.

Anyone else's DirecTV not record this? Either ESPN or DTV changed the actual title of the show from "30 for 30: Soccer Stories" to the usual "30 for 30" and that led to it not being recorded. I guess it's reairing on ESPN2 on Sunday at 10pm EST - just really wanted to watch this yesterday and technology boned me so if that happened to anyone else, you've got a re-air time to record it again.

That was a very, very angry documentary. A number of films in the series have been about tragedy, but take on a more somber, reflective tone and somewhat ask "what if" during the presentation. That's not the case here; there's a slow burn that builds as a horrible event happens and the coverup becomes worse than the crime, and it rises and rises until the whole "Justice For the 96" chant that's just two decades of righteous anger, fury, rage pouring out.

There's no comparison for what's occurred here in the States. We've had fans fall to their deaths and kill each other and get into fights with the athletes and poison trees, but never on such a scale and where they would be held responsible in a situation where it wasn't their fault.

This might be the first 30 for 30 I really dislike, although it has nothing to do with the production or story. It doesn't even really have to do with the subject. It's Bill Laimbeer being all over the place, and the knowledge of how it warms his awful heart knowing that people have this reaction.

Also Mitch Albom's hair is amazing.

The docs that are filtered through the league office aren't that great. This would have been fine for NBA TV and I would have watched. But they shouldn't put this stuff under the "30 for 30" umbrella. Not sure how you can put out something like Hillsborough which digs deep into a topic and doesn't hold back and follow it up with a puff piece that avoided mentioning things the league found troubling.

Here's how: the television rights to the English Premier League are owned by NBCSN, and the team in question is located an ocean away from Bristol, CT. Meanwhile, the NBA and ESPN have a massive rights deal, and a longstanding working relationship. That's how.

I was bummed about the lack of drama. I've always had the feeling that even though some of the guys went on to other teams that they will always be Pistons no matter what. I would have loved to see some of the guys let loose and talk about how they actually felt. I saw John Salley not that long ago making less than complimentary remarks regarding the Bulls (and Jordan) and he was on the 1996 Bulls. The personalities from this time were so intense, and they put Isiah out there smiling and waving, trying to smooth everything over. I wanted more blood and bile.

This Pistons thing was boring as poo poo. It's like some 2nd rate straight to DVD NBA produced puff piece for nostalgic fans. As somebody who doesn't give two shits about basketball or the Pistons there was nothing interesting here. Unlike the Reggie Miller one which actually told an interesting story.

If this weren't produced by NBA Entertainment, it might've had that stuff.
